Knowledge and Understanding [20 marls]
1. A cone has a radius of 2 m and a height of 5 m.
a) Calculate the slant height of the cone. [3 marks]
Solution
r = 5 m, h = 8 m
By the Pythagorean Theorem, determine s:
s = √𝒓𝟐 + 𝒉𝟐 = √𝟓𝟐 + 𝟑𝟐 = √𝟑𝟒 ≈ 5.83 m
The slant height of the cone is about 5.8 m

b) Calculate the surface area and volume of the cone. [5 marks]

Solution
SA = 𝝅r(r + s) ≈ 3.14 (5) (5 + 5.83) ≈ 170.1 m2
The surface area of the cone is about 170.1 m2
V = 𝜋r2h = 𝜋(2)2(5) = 20𝜋 ≈ 62.8 m3.

2. Calculate the surface area and volume for the triangular-based prism
below: [6 + 3 marks]
Solution
By the Pythagorean Theorem,
determine the height of the base:
h2 + 32 = 62 ⇒ h2 = 36 – 9 = 27
h ≈ 5.20 cm
𝟏
Abase ≈ (6)(5.20) = 15.60 cm2
𝟐
SA = 2Abase + Alateral ≈ 2(15.60) + 3(6 × 10) ≈ 31.2 + 180 = 211.2 cm2.
V = Abase × H ≈ 15.60 × 10 = 156.0 cm3.
The surface area is about 211.2 cm2 and the volume is about 156.0 cm3.
3. A square-based prism has a volume of 600 cm3. Calculate the volume
of a square-based pyramid with the same base and height. [3marks]
Solution
𝟏
Vpyramid = Vprizm = 200 cm3
𝟑

Application [12 marks]

4. A new cylindrical shaped soft drink can has the following dimensions:
diameter = 5 cm, height = 18 cm.
a) How much soft drink will fit the can? [4]
Solution
r = diameter ÷ 2 = 2.5 cm
V = 𝜋r2h = (2.5)2(18) ≈ 353.4 cm3
353.4 mL of soft drink will fit the can.

b) Determine the amount of aluminium, in cm2, required to construct the

can. [4]
Solution
SA = 2𝜋r2 + 2𝜋rh = 2𝜋r (r + h)
= 2(2.5) (2.5 + 18)
= 2(2.5) (2.5 + 18)
= 102.5𝜋 ≈ 322.0 cm2
To construct the can, it is required about 322.0 cm2.

5. A cube-shaped box has sides 10 cm in length. What is the volume of

the largest square-based pyramid that can fit in the box? Draw a diagram
labeling relevant dimensions. [4]
Solution
𝟏
V = × 103 = 333.3 cm3
𝟑
The volume of the largest square-based pyramid
that can fit in the box is about 333.3 cm3.
Communication [6 marks]
6. On her 3-dimensional geometry test Jenna wrote the following
statenent: “The maximum volume for a given surface area of a square
base prism always occurs when the prism is a rectangilar prism”. Is she
correct? Explain! [3 marks]
Answer
The maximum volume for a given surface area of a square base prism
always occurs when the prism is a cube. Since a cube is a rectangilar
prism, the statement is correct, but it is absolutly useless.

7. The “WE R CANS” company produces cylindrical shaped cans. If

you were a consultant to the company, what dimensions would you
suggest for producing any cylindrical shaped can? Explain! [3 marks]
Answer
Among all cylindrical shapes with a fixed surface area has a cylinder
which height equals its diameter. Therefore, for producing any
cylindrical shaped can I would suggest the shape of a cylinder which
height equals its diameter.
Thinking [5 marks]
8. A solid metal ball (with radius 2 cm) is placed in a cylindrical can.
The can is sealed and the ball fits tightly in the can (the top and bottom
of the can touch the ball). Calculate the amount of air inside the can. [5]
Solution
r = 2 cm, h = 2r = 4 cm,
𝟒 𝟒
Vsphere = 𝜋r3 ≈ 𝜋 (23) ≈ 33.51 cm3.
𝟑 𝟑
The volume of the sphere is about 33.51 cm3
Determine the volume of the cylinder.
Vcylinder = 𝜋r2h = 𝜋 (22)(4) = 16 𝜋 ≈ 50.27 cm3
The volume of the cylinder is about 50.27 cm3.
Determine the amount of air inside the can:
∆V = Vcylinder –Vsphere ≈ 50.27 – 33.51 ≈ 16.8 cm3.
The amount of air inside the can is about 16.8 cm3.
