1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 This report presents an assessment of the fire resistance performance of the steel
doorset as previously fire tested and described in WARRES No. 100357, if modified as
described in the Appendices of this report.
1.2 The proposed steel doorset is required to be capable of a performance of 240 minutes
integrity with respect to SS 332: 2007, Clause 4.
1.3 The data referred to in Section 7 (Supporting Data) of this report has been considered for
the purpose of this assessment, which has been prepared in general accordance with the
principles of Fire Test Study Group Resolution 82, 2001.
1.4 This report may only be reproduced in full without modifications by the report sponsor.
Copies, extracts, or abridgments of this report in any form shall not be published by other
organisations without permission of Exova Warringtonfire Aus Pty Ltd.
2 REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Doorsets shall be installed into supporting construction of brickwork, concrete blockwork
or, reinforced concrete capable of providing the necessary support for the required period
of 240 minutes.
2.2 Doorsets shall be constructed in a similar manner from materials and components of the
same manufacture and equivalent quality as tested or, as otherwise appraised by Exova
Warringtonfire.
2.3 Door leaf edge clearance gaps will not exceed the tested values as recorded in WARRES
No.100357. Larger gaps will invalidate this report.
3 CONCLUSIONS
3.1 If the tested doorset described in WARRES No. 100357 had been modified as described
in the Appendices of this report, it is expected that it would have been capable of
achieving a performance of 240 minutes integrity with respect to SS 332: 2007, Clause 4.
3.2 This Conclusion is conditional on the supporting test reports being currently valid. An
expired report invalidates this Conclusion.
4 VALIDITY
4.1 This assessment report does not provide an endorsement by Exova Warringtonfire Aus
Pty Ltd of actual products supplied.
4.2 The conclusions of this assessment may be used to directly assess fire hazard, but it
should be recognised that a single test method will not provide a full assessment of fire
hazard under all conditions.
4.3 Because of the nature of fire testing, and the consequent difficulty in quantifying the
uncertainty of measurement, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy. The
inherent variability in test procedures, materials and methods of construction, and
installation may lead to variations in performance between elements of similar
construction.
4.4 The assessment can therefore only relate to the actual prototype test specimens, testing
conditions and methodology described in the supporting data, and does not imply any
performance abilities of constructions of subsequent manufacture.
4.5 This assessment is based on information and experience available at the time of
preparation. The published procedures for the conduct of tests and the assessment of
test results are the subject of constant review and improvement and it is recommended
that this report be reviewed on or, before, the stated expiry date.
4.6 The technical content of this report remains the intellectual property of Exova
Warringtonfire. Therefore to maintain its applicability, if contradictory evidence becomes
available the assessment will be unconditionally withdrawn and Hart Industries Pte Ltd
will be notified in writing. Similarly, the assessment is invalidated if the assessed
construction is subsequently tested because actual test data is deemed to take
precedence over an expressed opinion.
4.7 The information contained in this report shall not be used for the assessment of variations
other than those stated in the conclusions above. The assessment is valid provided no
modifications are made to the systems detailed in this report. All details of construction
should be consistent with the requirements stated in the relevant test reports and all
referenced documents.
4.8 This assessment is only valid if accompanied by full copies of the indicated supporting
data.
5 DECLARATION BY:
HART INDUSTRIES PTE LTD
By distributing copies of this report we, Hart Industries Pte Ltd confirm that:
we are not aware of any information that could adversely affect the conclusions of
this assessment; if we subsequently become aware of any such information, we
agree to ask the assessing authority to withdraw the assessment.

7 SUPPORTING DATA
7.1 The following report summary is provided for information only. Reference shall be made
to complete copies of the reports for full specimen and performance details.
The passive leaf was fitted with a glazed aperture based on a pane of Firelite of 312mm
by 162mm. The leaves were each hung on four hinges. The active leaf was latched to the
passive leaf, which was bolted.
*The performance indicated in the Addendum to the test report, on the condition that only
Dorma TS83 door closers are fitted.
A1 APPENDIX 1
SS332: 2007, Clause 4
A1.1 Proposal
A1.1.1 It is proposed that the performance achieved by the doorset assembly as described in
WARRES No. 100357 and tested in accordance with BS 476: Part 22: 1987, may be
considered to indicate a similar notional performance of 240 minutes integrity is possible
with respect to SS332: 2007, Clause 4.
A1.2 Discussion
A1.2.1 The critical testing procedures, temperature/time regime, performance criteria, and
instrumentation in BS 476: Part 22: 1987 and SS332: 2007, Clause 4, are similarly
expressed, and are technically comparable. However, there is a significant difference
relating to furnace overpressure.
A1.2.2 For BS: 476: Part 22, the furnace overpressure is controlled so that the neutral axis, or
ambient atmospheric pressure, occurs at 1000mm above the notional floor level. For
SS332: 2007 the neutral axis is set at 500mm above the notional floor level.
A1.2.3 At a given height above the notional floor level, this change in pressure effectively
increases the atmospheric furnace pressure to which test specimens are exposed relative
to the ambient pressure.
A1.2.4 Depending on the nature of the specimen, such an increase in pressure can produce
significantly different results, caused by an increased tendency for hot gases and flames
to pass to the unexposed face.
A1.2.5 Specimens that include any combustible materials are particularly at risk from either direct
ignition of the materials themselves or, ignition of evolved vapours as they exit on the
unexposed side of the specimen. In addition, the greater tendency for hot gases to flow
within gaps and voids within a specimen may affect temperature sensitive materials and
materials prone to thermal degradation or erosion by charring.
A1.2.6 The test specimen under consideration is a doorset entirely of steel construction.
Performance in a fire resistance test is expected to be determined by thermal response
alone and not complicated by thermal degradation or significant erosion, or softening as
might occur with combustible or relatively low melting point specimens, which are
generally more sensitive to variations in test methods.
A1.2.7 The thermal properties of steel are therefore expected to compensate for the increased
furnace overpressure specified in SS332: 2007: Clause 4
A1.2.8 In this case, the achieved test performance is considered to indicate a notionally similar
performance with respect to SS332: 2007: Clause 4 is possible, and the proposal is
positively appraised for the required period of 240 minutes.
A2 APPENDIX 2
Alternative ironmongery by Hafele
A2.1 Proposal
A2.1.1 It is proposed that the following items of ironmongery may be fitted in place of the
corresponding items as originally tested. The Installation Notes shall apply:
Installation notes
• Closers shall be supported by separate and specific test evidence in accordance
with BS 476: Part 22: 1987, SS 332: 2000 or, SS 332: 2007 to show they have
been fitted on the unexposed face of a completely uninsulated steel doorset that
achieved an integrity performance of at least the required period.
• If fire test data is not available, the closers shall only be fitted on the exposed face
of doorsets when the direction of risk can be clearly identified as being from one
side only.
Installation note:
Except during periods of planned maintenance or access, the dead bolt shall be
engaged.
A2.1.7 Hinges
Hafele 2BB st/st butt hinges, 100~127mm x 75~100mm x 3mm
Tectus TE 520/525 3D full solid steel hinge
Tectus TE 210 3D full solid steel hinge
Tectus TE 310 3D full slid steel hinge
Tectus TE 630 3-D full solid steel hinge
Tectus TE510 3D and TE510 HU full solid steel hinges
Installation notes
• The coordinator shall only be used when the plastic roller is replaced by a roller of
non-combustible material.
• If the plastic rollers are retained, the coordinator shall only be fitted on the exposed
face of doorsets when the direction of exposure can be clearly identified as being
from one side only, and the doorset opens towards the fire risk.
Installation note
• The panic device shall be supported by separate and specific test evidence in
accordance with BS 476: Part 22: 1987, SS 332: 2000 or, SS 332: 2007 to show it
has been fitted on the exposed face of a completely uninsulated steel doorset that
achieved an integrity performance of at least the required period.
• If fire resistance test data is not available, the panic devices shall be fitted in
addition to a mortice or cylindrical lock and top and bottom bolts, as originally
tested or, as otherwise assessed by Exova Warringtonfire.
Installation note
• Seals shall be fitted in the centre of the bottom edges of leaves.
A2.2 Discussion
A2.2.1 All the items have been tested in accordance with methods described in the appropriate
Annexes of SS 332: 2007, which requires hardware be tested for mechanical
performance in addition to acceptability with respect to fire resistance performance. The
relevant test data is summarised in the Supporting Data section of this report.
A2.2.2 The critical specifications of the proposed items have been compared against the
corresponding items as originally tested on the target doorset described in WARRES No.
100357.
A2.2.3 The proposed items have been appraised for risk in terms of:
§ quantity and configuration of leaf or frame material removed for installation
§ the melting point of critical components
§ degree of restraint of leaf in the closed position
§ potential ignition source of materials of construction
A2.2.4 In some cases, particular installation conditions are considered necessary, as discussed
below.
A2.2.5 Ignition of hydraulic fluid escaping from a heated door closer on the unexposed face of an
uninsulated steel doorset can occur in a manner constituting loss of integrity. Fluid from a
closer on the exposed face of a doorset is more likely to be consumed within the furnace
chamber.
A2.2.6 Consistent with the available certificates of conformity (CoC’s), the application of the
proposed closers is limited to the periods stated in the certificates.
A2.2.7 Where there is no specific reference to applicability to uninsulated steel doorsets, the
Installation Note requires additional appropriate fire resistance test data be made
available.
A2.2.8 As a basic premise, in the absence of specific fire test data, roller latches cannot be
accepted as appropriate means of providing positive mechanical restraint in fire resisting
applications.
A2.2.9 It is for this reason that the relevant Installation Note requires that doorsets fitted with the
proposed roller latch are normally locked except for planned maintenance or access.
Door coordinator
A2.2.10 The proposed item includes an arm and a plastic roller. The roller bears directly against
an uninsulated steel leaf of the target doorset. In view of the uninsulated nature of the
leaves and the required period of 240 minutes, there is a notional risk of ignition of the
roller material.
A2.2.11 The risk associated with the roller is avoided if it is replaced by a roller of non-combustible
material, in which case the selector would be acceptable for applications requiring 240
minutes integrity.
A2.2.12 If the plastic roller is retained, the coordinator is to be fitted only on the exposed side of
doorsets.
A2.2.13 Because rod-operated panic devices may not provide latching and bolting functions
directly comparable with a standard latch and flush bolts as originally tested, the proposal
requires specific supporting test data relating to uninsulated steel doorsets. Such test data
will be an acceptable means of providing the necessary confidence to support their use.
A2.2.14 When fitted, the aluminium seal carriers will occur between steel door leaf skins, and the
elastomeric components will occur at mid-thickness of the leaf.
A2.2.15 The elastomeric components are combustible and may flame during a standard fire test.
However, the seals are set back from the leaf faces, and the specified furnace pressure
condition at the floor level is negative, which tends to draw air into the furnace chamber.
A2.2.16 This airflow is therefore expected to reduce the risk that flaming associated with the
elastomeric components would be observed on the unexposed side for a sustained
period of 10 seconds, which would be required to constitute loss of integrity as defined in
the testing standard.
A2.2.17 in view of the relatively small mass of combustible material, its location, and the prevailing
furnace pressure condition, the proposed seals are not considered to present a significant
risk of integrity weakness for the required period of 240 minutes
Overall performance
A2.2.18 Consistent with the available certificates of conformity (C0C’s), the application of the
particular closers is limited to applications requiring 120 minutes integrity, as indicated in
the certificates.
A2.2.19 The Proposal includes Installation Notes that when satisfied, support a positive
assessment for the required period of 240 minutes.
A2.2.20 Where no Installation Notes or other conditions are stated in the Proposal, the proposed
items of ironmongery effectively replace the corresponding items as originally tested on a
like-with-like basis and are positively assessed for period of 240 minutes.
