Dear Business Statistics class,

Announcements for both upcoming Midterm exam for Business Statistics course and the fourth
TA Session:

A. Please be advised that the midterm exam for Business Statistics course will be held NEXT
TUESDAY EVENING (MAR 21) within 2 hours and a half (150 mins) from 6:30 - 9:00 PM.
The whole class will be split into 2 groups for two exam rooms. Exam rooms will be announced
later.
The midterm exam will cover contents from Chapter 1 to 3 and divided into two parts as follows:

1/ MULTIPLE CHOICES (Yes/No, True/False, ABCDE, leave blank for your final answer....)
(25-30%)

2/ WRITING TASKS (70-75%)

Main points for each chapter:

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

+ Histogram
+ Percentiles - Quartiles:
- Step 1: Re-arrange your data in the ascending order (from smallest to largest)
- Step 2: Use formula to identify the corresponding position i in the given dataset as follows: i =
(n+1)*p/100 (p: pth percentile)
- Step 3: Find out the corresponding value v(i) by using interpolation.
+ Median - Mode - Mean
+ Population/Sample Parameters (Mean, Variance (Standard Deviation ^ 2), Proportion):
Practice with calculator
+ Chebyshev's Theorem / Empirical Rule: Given dataset, verify Chebyshev's Theorem /
Empirical Rule holds true or not. Explain.
- Step 1: From given dataset, compute population/sample mean and standard deviation
- Step 2: Construct the interval mean +/- k*SD
- Step 3: Count how many data lie within the interval in Step 2
- Step 4: Make the final conclusion
Please be noted that Chebyshev's Theorem can be applied to any distribution while Empirical
Rule can be applicable for mound-shaped (distribution has only one mode) and symmetric
distribution.
+ Box plot: Construct box plot and detect whether suspected outlier or outlier exists or not -->
make recommendation
- Step 1: Calculate quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3)
- Step 2: Construct inner fences and outer fences
- Step 3: Detect the existence of suspected outlier (lie within inner and outer fences) or outlier
(outside the outer fences) --> make recommendation (Suspected outlier: reinvestigate, Outlier:
delete from dataset and re-draw the box)

CHAPTER 2: PROBABILITY
+ Independent events - Product Rules of Independent events (Intersection - Union)
+ Permutation (with order consideration) - Combination (without order consideration)
+ Conditional probability
+ Total probability Rule - Bayesian Theorem:
- You should analyze and summarize given context carefully
- Translate the given context into mathematical notations
- Draw cause-and-effect diagram / partitions/decision tree to solve the problem.

CHAPTER 3: RANDOM VARIABLE

+ Expected Value (Expectation - Mean of Random Variable)
- Given random variable X and its corresponding probabilities, find out expectation & variance
of X
- Given random variable X and its corresponding probabilities, find out expectation of function
of X (h(X)) (remember the linear function ^^)
- Given random variable X and F(X), find out corresponding P(X).
+ Probability Mass Function (PMF) - Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF)
+ Binomial Distribution: X follows B(n,p) with n: number of trials and p: probability of success
(Bernoulli Trial - either success or failure)
+ Hyper-geometric distribution: X follows HG(N,S,n) with N: pool/population size, S: number
of successes and n: sample size
Note:

+ This is an open book examination. No laptops, PDA, no past exams, no test banks.
+ Use of calculator is allowed; discussion and material transfer are strictly prohibited.

B. Keep in mind that the fourth TA sessionwill be held this Sunday afternoon as usual (MAR 19)
from 1:00 to 3:30 P.M

Please help me spread this news and make sure all of your class members know of
announcements.

P.S.
@ ANYONE, WHO CANNOT ENTER THE MIDTERM EXAMINATION
PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED BEFORE TOMORROW EVENING.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
