Formation Pressures &Temperatures

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. What is the hydrostatic pressure gradient (psi/ft) of 9.1 and 19.24 ppg mud? Calculate the
resulting pressure at 12,050 ft true vertical depth (TVD).

2. What mud density is required to overbalance by 250 psi a pressure of 4790 psi at 10,300'
vertical depth. Is the formation pressure normal or abnormal at that depth?

3. After a kick was signaled, the well was closed in. Shut in drill pipe pressure was 400 psi.
Mud weight was 9.1 ppg, Well depth (kick depth) 10,000'. Find the mud Wt. to control the
kick.

4. A gas kick was noticed while drilling at 9,000'. Casing shut in pressure was 950 psi, the height
of gas column at the moment of the kick is 500’. Original mud density was 10 ppg, gas
density was 1.0 ppg. What is drill pipe shut in pressure? Find the mud density to kill the well.

5. A porous formation is at 9,500 subsea. The hole is vertical and RKB mean sea level is 450 ft.
The formation has 5000 psi reservoir pressure; it was drilled with 11.5 ppg. Calculate the
amount of overbalance opposite the formation (overbalance means the difference between
mud pressure and formation pressure).

6. Drill collars (500' x 8", 150 lb/ft in air) and 5" drill pipe (19.5 lb/ft in air) are used to drill vertical,
12.25" hole. Well depth is 10,000 ft. At 10,000' the string is pulled out of hole to change the
bit. How many feet of drill pipe to be pulled out of hole to have mud hydrostatic pressure
equal to 4500 psi? Mud in hole is 10.0 ppg.

7. It is required not to fracture a formation located at 10,000 ft. Mud in the hole has 8.9 ppg.
Formation fracture pressure gradient is 0.75 psi/ft. What should be the maximum surface
pressure that should fracture the formation?

8. Drilling is conducted with 9.8 ppg mud. Friction losses in the annulus are 150 psi at 8,000'.
Find the static bottom hole pressure and the equivalent circulation density at 8,000'.
Assuming that friction losses are linearly proportional to depth what is the ECD at 5,000'?

9. While drilling at 9000' with 10.0 ppg mud, complete loss of circulation was encountered. Fluid
level was found at 500 ft below rotary kelly bushing. Determine formation pressure. If the
friction pressure in the annulus was 200 psi, What is the maximum mud weight to be safely
circulated without changing pumping rate, assume the same annular pressure losses ?

10. Calculate the normal reservoir temperature at 12,000' subsea, when the temperature gradient
is 1.6 degree F/100 ft; assume the surface temperature to be 100 degrees F.

11. After complete loss of circulation, a temperature survey was run in the hole. The survey
showed the following readings :

Depth, Ft. Temperature, Degree F

- 6000 ss 135
- 7000 ss 151
- 8000 ss 167
- 9000 ss 172
- 10000 ss 222

Locate the loss of circulation zone.
