INTRODUCTION

The article selected is ‘The Truth About Art Education written by Katter, E. (2013)

discuss on the experiences that students can gain throughout the learning not just in art but also

learning about perception and our visual world, about our cultural heritages and mastery of skills.

This article mentions that art education can create opportunity to all students to experience to

their personal interest and understandings. It does can be done through repeated learning with

masterfully expressive forms of visual communication, decoration and celebration.

Therefore, the most important part of visual arts education perhaps is perception because

it concerned with changing and shifting viewpoints of individual. It is stated that students learn

how to see the same thing in different ways and from different point of views. This article

stresses on about our visual world that dominates society by manipulated images, designed

objects and infrastructure that changes the natural order of the environment. According to the

article, the needs to understand and evaluate the purposes of the visual forms students encounter

on daily basis is crucial in order to live successfully and participate fully in this visually oriented

world.

Through experiences with art, students begin to see their need, values and beliefs in

connection to those of the diverse peoples throughout the world and their cultural heritages.
SUMMARY

As indicated in the article, through art education students learn not just about art itself

but also learn how to perceive things not just on the surface but values and meaning behind it.

The major points made in article include, art education helps students get an understanding of

diverse cultures throughout the world. Therefore, many hold the misconception that art is a

superfluous, isolated subject when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

As they usually acquire the ability to work with patience, precision and care, students

will learn not just to create art but also learn an even more important life lesson. “If it’s worth

doing at all, it’s worth doing well.” Katter. E (2013). The lack of resources for visual arts will

make it difficult for students to understand about multiracial cultural worlds because sometimes

visual speaks louder than words.

CRITICAL RELECTION

The author methods that learning about art offers the opportunities for student to learn

appreciate their surrounding and communicate people through visualizes their point of view. For

art to be valued, it is essential to understand what art is and how can art play an important role in

developing good contact and close relationship between different cultural. Teaching art in

Malaysian schools for example requires teachers have a good foundation of understanding

different cultural background of students, so that pedagogically, teachers can employ different

approaches to deliver art to students.


The benefits and effectiveness of students to learn art in teaching and learning is to

nurtures inventiveness as it engages students in a process that aids in the development of self-

esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation. Therefore, participating in art

activities helps students to gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience,

adapting to and respecting others’ ways of working and thinking, developing creative

problem-solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways.

To restated, the article ‘The Truth About Art Education’ written by Katter.E (2013)

that art educations can be effectively promoted and implemented to suit the needs of students

regardless background and even for students abilities. In addition, Malaysia education also can

relate to this method because of Malaysia has developed its own mould multicultural education

especially in art.
