wre PATENT. SPECIFICATION ‘146,433, Convention Date (Germany): Mar, 13, 1916, Application Date (in United Kingdom): duly 3, 1920. No, 18,481 I 20. (Patent of Addition to No. 146,432: Convention Date (Germany): Jan. 19, 1916). Complete Accepted: July 28, 1921. . COMPLETE” SPECIFICATION. Improvements in or relating to Periscopes more particularly for . Submarines. We, Orriscne Ansvarr, C. P. Goxnx Axccpixcusmtscuarr, of.'45/46” Rhein- instrument is marked 1. Its lower end iis secured to two deflecting :prisms 2, 3 strasso, Berlin-Friedenau, Germany, Ger- which are arranged in front of the angle 45 man company, do hereby ‘dec! e eye-piece 4. ‘The angle eye-pieco 4 is 5 nature of this invention and secured to the guide casing 5 in which the’ ananner the same is to he performed, to instrument part J aoves. ‘Che: move- be particularly described and ascertained iment of the instrument part-1 is effected in did-by.the following statement:— by means of a spindle 6 which can be 50 ‘This Jinvention relates -to periscopes turned by means'of two bevel wheels.7, 10 more particularly for submarines, which from ‘an ‘electric motor 8 mounted in the can extend and the eye-piece of which guide cusing 5. “The spindle 6 ‘engages ‘ remains:stationary in its position during With a nut 9 secured to the instrument the pull-in and out movement, and which part 1. _ As the optical elements arranged 55 is provided with a reflector system for oon- - in the, instrument part 1 in front of the 15 stantly reflecting the rays into the eye- deflecting prisms 2, 3, participate in the piece. ‘The invention relates to van ™ovement of the said part—the said opti jmprovenient in or modification of the Cal elements being here referred to for instrument deserihed in the Specification the sake of brevity as object-glass—the 60 Of Letters Patent No. 146,482 whereby movements of the instrument part 1 would 20 the drive of the moving parts is simplified, result in a movement of the object-glas: ‘This improvement consists in the pull-in image plane relatively to the image plane and out part of the instrument being of the stationary eye-pioce 4. In order Secured to the reflectors for, reflecting the to cancel the said movement of the object~” 65 rays of light into the eye-piece, in such a glass image plane when the instrument , 25 manner that the said reflectors take part part 1 is moved, the object glass element if the pull-in and out movement, whilst 10 is mounted,’ siccording to this inven- for the purpose of maintaining the coin- tion, adjustably in the instrument part cidence of the object-glass image plane 1, so that by suitable movement in the 70 with the eye-piece image plane, u lens instrument part 1, permanent coincidence 30 clement is mounted in an adjustable of the object-glass image plane with the jnanner_in the adjustable instrument pye-piece mage plane can be ensured even art. ‘The movement of the said lons ‘during the plling-in and out of the clement relatively to the extensible part, periscope. According to the drawing, 75 is preferably effected automatically in this movement of the object-glass part cordance With the extent of the pull-in 10 takes place automatically. To that and out movement of the said part. end, the object-glass part 10 is coniected ‘A construction of the instrument to an endless driving part 11 passing over according to the present invention is - guide rollers 12, 13, the latier of which 80 illustrated by way of example in the 40 accompanying drawing in two axial sec- tions at right-angles to each other. Tho pull-in and out part of, the [Price 1/-] is, secured to a’gear wheel 14 meshing with the teeth of a rack 15 which, in its turn, is eecured to the guide casing 5. Bach pull-in and out movement of the. 2 Ww 15 20 25 30 146,433 instrument part 1 results therefore in a rotation of the gear wheel 14, and there- fore in a movement of the endless driving part 11 over the guide rollers 12, 13, the object-glass clement 10 participating in the said movement. ‘The ratio of trans- mission is so calculated that the object- glass element 10 is always in such a position, independently of the licight at the time of the pull-out and in instrament part 1, that the dbject-glass image plane goincides with the eye-piece image plane. In order to maintain during the movement, the same magnifying in spite of the shifting of the single object-glass clement 10, the condition must be fulfilled. that the object glass part 10 should be struck by parallel pencils of rays. Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said inven- tion and in- what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what wo claim is:— 1. An improvement or modification of the extensible periscope, more particu- larly for submarines, with the eye-piece fixed relatively to the pull-in movement, and with reflectors for reflecting the rays into the eye-piece, participating in the pull-in movement, as described in the Specification of Letters Patent No 146,432 ebaracterised by the reflectors reflecting Redhill; Printed for His Me Stationery Office, by Love the light into the eye-piece, being secured tothe extensible ‘part of the periscope and by the adjustable instrament part being provided with a lens clement adjustable relatively to it, for the purpose of maintaining the coincidence of the object-glass image plane with the oye piece image plane. 2. A periscope as set forth in Claim 1, characterised by the lens element adjust able in the pulf-in instrument part, being controlled by an endless driving element, the driving wheel of which is coupled to a stationary tooth rack or the like, that is to say, to one that does not participate in the pull-in movement, for the purpose of automatic adjustment of the adjustable jens element. 3. A periscope as set forth in Claim 1, characterised by the adjustable instrument part being mounted in a guide casing, in the interior of which is mounted the motor for pulling in and out the adjust- able instrument part. 4. ‘The periscope substantially as described or substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
