High Integration
Based on the all-IP unified platform and designed with the latest high-performance
hardware processing blades and modular large-capacity software, the ZXUN iEPC
provides larger capacity and throughout for the LTE network, and reduces the operation
costs of enterprises and small LTE carriers.
High Reliability
Based on the carrier-level ATCA/ETCA platform, all boards support hardware redundancy
functions.
Small Scale
The ZXUN iEPC uses the 5 U ATCA shelf or 11 U ETCA shelf, which greatly reduces the
occupied space of the EPC network and eases the EPC equipment room establishment
difficulties.
Advanced Design
Based on the carrier-level platform, the ZXUN iEPC has the following characteristics:
l The hardware system uses new components, which ensures high integration and
performance.
l Extra larger integrated circuits are preferred to reduce the number of independent
components, which enhances the reliability of the hardware system and reduces
power consumption.
l Strictly comply with the software engineering requirements, the software is designed
with the following rules: from top to bottom, hierarchical, and modular. Standards of
modules are the same for ease of NE integration and hardware platform grafting.
l The all-IP software and hardware platform is used.

of different processing boards, interface boards, and the fabric switch board
into a plane, constructing a standard distributed architecture platform.
2-7
FSWBb The FSWBb board is the Fabric plane switching center of the entire ETCA
system. Its corresponding logic board is a UFSW board. In addition, it
is integrated with multiple clock units. This board can access external
clock references (implementing the access of BITS, GPS, and PTP clocks,
the line clock extraction, and the PPL-based time synchronization) and
generate clock references within a shelf or between two shelves.
MPIEa/MPIEb The MPIEa and MPIEb boards are network interface boards used for
IP access. The corresponding logic boards are the UIPB_8GE boards,
which can implement the data packet fragmentation and reassembling,
multiplexing and de-multiplexing, and the data packet forwarding functions.
l The MPIEa board provides eight multi-mode GE optical interfaces

3.1 Function
The ZXUN iEPC OMM system comprises of the OMM server and the local maintenance
terminal.
From the software respective, the OMM system comprises the front-end module, server
module, and client module. The overall software structure complies with the TMN structure.
From the function respective, the OMM system comprises the following modules:
Name Function
Configuration Used for software and hardware configuration, and data validity check.
management
Performance Displays current alarms and provides related alarm operations in real time.
management
Alarm Used for measurement statistics of system performance parameters and session
management data, and reflects performance indexes of the mobile system for reference.
Trace Includes signaling trace, and failure observation. Used for tracing and resolving
management of signaling code stream, and displaying decoding stream.
Log management Records the operation logs, security logs, system logs for ease of query.
3-1
With powerful management and network capability, the ZXUN iEPC NMS controls all
NEs, provides cascading control and reverse operations, and implements remote access
after accessing WAN through routers. The NMS uses the Q3 NM interface standards,
provides the NM center with flexible interface control function, and integrates GUI and
MML processing modes.
3-2
Attachment
During the attachment flow, a user registers to the ZXUN iEPC network. As the first
flow after the user turns on the mobile phone, the attachment flow is prerequisite for all
subsequent flows.
During the attachment flow, a default bearer is established for the user, and the user can
also be authenticated. The user must be authenticated if it is the first time for the user to
be attached to the EPS network.
After the attachment flow, the ZXUN iEPC establishes the context and a default bearer for
the UE, and the user can access the data service and other services through the ZXUN
iEPC network.
4-1
Detachment
With the detachment function, a user is de-registered from the ZXUN iEPC network, and
all the user's bearers are deleted simultaneously. After the detachment, the user cannot
access the data service or other services through the ZXUN iEPC network.
Location Update
The location update function enables a user to re-access the ZXUN iEPC network through
updating tracing areas when the user moves from a cell to another cell, or the access
technique of the user changes to another access technique. This function ensures that
the user location information in the ZXUN iEPC is the latest.
Service Request
A UE or network sends a service request for resources to a UE in ECM-IDLE status.
During the service request flow, the S1 and E-RAB connections of the user are
re-established, and the RRC and RB connections of the wireless interface are also
re-established. After the flow, the ECM statuses of the UE and the ZXUN iEPC user
change from idle to the connecting.
S1 Connection
The S1 interface release function releases the logical S1-AP signaling connection of
the S1-MME interface and all S1 bearers of the S1-U interface. This function shifts the
statuses of the UE and MME from ECM-CONNECTED to ECM-IDLE, and deletes all
related contexts of the UE from an eNodeB.
The S1 interface release function can be triggered in the following scenarios:
l eNodeB triggering: The S1 interface is released because of access network events,
for example, the release is triggered by the operation and maintenance system, a UE
is in the inactive status for a long time, the wireless interface and S1 interface are
released to save resources, or a UE initiates the connection release.
l ZXUN iEPC triggering: The S1 interface is released because of ZXUN iEPC events,
for example, the authentication failure and UE de-registration.
4-2
services, and are provided with the communication security function, including the NAS
message encryption and NAS message integrity protection functions.
4.7 IP Routing
For the S1 interface connecting to an eNodeB and the SGi interface connecting to the PDN
network, the IP routing function can be used to correctly transfer IP messages of logical
interfaces. The ZXUN iEPC supports static and dynamic IP route protocols, and provides
a flexible network solution.
4-3
Each PDN has different access properties and carrier control properties, for example, IP
addresses allocated to users and allocation modes. An enterprise Intranet can use an
address pool different from the Internet.
An APN indicates a target PDN network that a user requests to access.
The ZXUN iEPC provides each APN with the corresponding properties for implement
different control functions of different APNs.
4.11 Billing
The ZXUN iEPC supports billing. The PGW in the ZXUN iEPC collects billing information,
generates CDRs based on the traffic threshold or time threshold, and then transfers the
CDRs to the ZXUN CG. The CDRs are then transferred to the BD.
4-4
