4.1 Mobility Management

Description
As a basic ZXUN iEPC function, the mobility management function provides service
continuity when users are moving.

Mobility management involves various mobility characteristics, for example, the

attachment, detachment, location update, service request, and SI connection
management.

Attachment
During the attachment flow, a user registers to the ZXUN iEPC network. As the first
flow after the user turns on the mobile phone, the attachment flow is prerequisite for all
subsequent flows.
During the attachment flow, a default bearer is established for the user, and the user can
also be authenticated. The user must be authenticated if it is the first time for the user to
be attached to the EPS network.

After the attachment flow, the ZXUN iEPC establishes the context and a default bearer for
the UE, and the user can access the data service and other services through the ZXUN
iEPC network.

4-1

SJ-20150919164026-001|2015-11-30 (R1.0) ZTE Proprietary and Confidential

ZXUN iEPC Product Description

Detachment
With the detachment function, a user is de-registered from the ZXUN iEPC network, and
all the user's bearers are deleted simultaneously. After the detachment, the user cannot
access the data service or other services through the ZXUN iEPC network.

Location Update
The location update function enables a user to re-access the ZXUN iEPC network through
updating tracing areas when the user moves from a cell to another cell, or the access
technique of the user changes to another access technique. This function ensures that
the user location information in the ZXUN iEPC is the latest.

Service Request
A UE or network sends a service request for resources to a UE in ECM-IDLE status.
During the service request flow, the S1 and E-RAB connections of the user are
re-established, and the RRC and RB connections of the wireless interface are also
re-established. After the flow, the ECM statuses of the UE and the ZXUN iEPC user
change from idle to the connecting.

S1 Connection
The S1 interface release function releases the logical S1-AP signaling connection of
the S1-MME interface and all S1 bearers of the S1-U interface. This function shifts the
statuses of the UE and MME from ECM-CONNECTED to ECM-IDLE, and deletes all
related contexts of the UE from an eNodeB.
The S1 interface release function can be triggered in the following scenarios:
l eNodeB triggering: The S1 interface is released because of access network events,
for example, the release is triggered by the operation and maintenance system, a UE
is in the inactive status for a long time, the wireless interface and S1 interface are
released to save resources, or a UE initiates the connection release.
l ZXUN iEPC triggering: The S1 interface is released because of ZXUN iEPC events,
for example, the authentication failure and UE de-registration.

4.2 Session Management

As a basic function of the LTE/EPC network, session management manages IP data
connection paths in the LTE/EPC network, including the establishment and deletion of
EPS bearers in the corresponding PDN network of the APN.

4.3 Security management

With this function, users who access the LTE network can be authenticated in AKA mode.
After being authenticated successfully, the users access the network, obtain network

services, and are provided with the communication security function, including the NAS
message encryption and NAS message integrity protection functions.

4.4 Subscription Management

With the flexible subscriber management capability, the ZXUN iEPC supports the LTE
subscription template, and provides the batch number allocation function and single
number allocation function.

4.5 IMSI Section-Based Area Restriction

The ZXUN iEPC provides the IMSI section-based area restriction function. IMSI sections
can be used to distinguish different types of LTE users.
Based on different requirements, this function restricts LTE terminals of different types to
accessing networks through specified tracing areas.

4.6 IMSI Section-Based EPLMN List

The ZXUN iEPC configures and sends EPLMN lists based on different IMSI sections. With
this function, apart from the home PLMN, subscribers can also access the EPLMN.
The ZXUN iEPC supports up to 16 IMSI sections, and up to 15 EPLMNs can be configured
for each section.

4.7 IP Routing
For the S1 interface connecting to an eNodeB and the SGi interface connecting to the PDN
network, the IP routing function can be used to correctly transfer IP messages of logical
interfaces. The ZXUN iEPC supports static and dynamic IP route protocols, and provides
a flexible network solution.

4.8 IP Address Management of LTE Users

This function dynamically manages IP addresses of LTE users as follows:
l The corresponding IP address of the PDN is allocated to a user when the user is
attached or requests for a PDN connection.
l The allocated IP address is reclaimed when the user is de-attached or deletes the
PDN connection.
IP addresses are allocated through the local APN IP address pool.

4.9 APN Management

Defined by the 3GPP protocol, the PDN can be accessed through a mobile network, for
example, Internet and Intranet are two different PDNs.

4-3

SJ-20150919164026-001|2015-11-30 (R1.0) ZTE Proprietary and Confidential

ZXUN iEPC Product Description

Each PDN has different access properties and carrier control properties, for example, IP
addresses allocated to users and allocation modes. An enterprise Intranet can use an
address pool different from the Internet.
An APN indicates a target PDN network that a user requests to access.
The ZXUN iEPC provides each APN with the corresponding properties for implement
different control functions of different APNs.

4.10 APN-Based QoS Management

Users of different APNs are provided with different QoS policy control functions based
on carriers' policies. Different LTE users have different APNs. Static APN-based QoS
parameters can be set to control the QoS of accessed users of a specified APN.

4.11 Billing
The ZXUN iEPC supports billing. The PGW in the ZXUN iEPC collects billing information,
generates CDRs based on the traffic threshold or time threshold, and then transfers the
CDRs to the ZXUN CG. The CDRs are then transferred to the BD.
