OXYGEN -- CREW - INTRODUCTION
Purpose

The crew oxygen system gives oxygen to the flight crew

for emergencies and procedures that make its use
necessary.

Component Locations

The crew oxygen masks and storage boxes are in the

flight compartment.

The oxygen cylinder and the high pressure components

are in the forward right part of the main equipment
center (MEC).

The overboard discharge indicator is external on the

right side of the airplane skin.

The low pressure supply line is in these areas:

- Forward and to the right of the MEC

- Flight compartment outboard of the side panels
- Flight compartment above the aft ceiling panels.

OXYGEN -- CREW - MASK/REGULATOR ASSEMBLY
Purpose

The crew oxygen mask/regulator assembly lets the flight

crew breathe oxygen.

Location

Each crew member station has an oxygen mask/regulator

in a stowage box.

General

Each mask/regulator assembly connects to a pneumatic

harness that inflates when you pull the mask by the
release levers (red) from the storage box. This lets
the mask be put over the head. When you release the
levers, the harness deflates.

If googles are not part of the mask, smoke goggles (not

shown) must be used as an additional item when there is
smoke.

The regulator decreases oxygen pressure from the supply

line (70 psi) to 0-5 psi. These are the three modes of
oxygen available to each crew member.

- Normal mode - an air/oxygen mixture is supplied as

demanded
- 100 percent mode - pure oxygen is supplied as
demanded
- Emergency mode - a constant supply of pure oxygen
flows through the mask.

OXYGEN -- CREW - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Supply and Regulation The valve supplies flow indication when oxygen flows
through the valve.
The cylinder supplies oxygen through the shutoff valve,
pressure regulator, and supply line to the masks in the
flight compartment. The supply line pressure regulator
decreases the bottle pressure to 70 psi. The
diluter/demand regulator/mask supplies the flow and
pressure to the crew.

Indications

The gauge on the cylinder shows cylinder pressure. A

pressure transducer also measures the pressure. The
data goes to the status page.

Overboard Discharge

The frangible disc breaks if cylinder pressure is more

than safe limits (2500 - 2750 psi). The oxygen flows
overboard through the overboard discharge indicator.

Oxygen Mask Stowage Box Shutoff Valve/Indicator

The oxygen shutoff valve/indicator supplies these

functions:

- On/off control
- Flow indication.

The valve automatically opens when the left door (not

shown) on the stowage box opens. The valve stays open
until you close the door and push the RESET/TEST LEVER.

OXYGEN SYSTEM -- PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM
General

Chemical oxygen generators supply oxygen to mask near

the passenger seats, attendant seats, and lavatories.

The generators give oxygen for a minimum of 12 minutes.

Operation

The passenger masks deploy electrically by a switch on

the flight deck P5 panel (manual) or by an aneroid
switch on the P19 panel (automatic at 14,000 feet).

A light on the P5 panel and a flight deck message shows

when the passenger oxygen system deploys.

OXYGEN SYSTEM -- PASSENGER SYSTEM LATCH MECHANISM
Location

There is a latch mechanism in each oxygen module in the

cabin. It has these components:

- Solenoid with striker and striker spring

- Latch arm
- latch.

The 14,000 feet altitude pressure switch is used to

automatically deploy the oxygen masks. It is on the P19
panel above the forward passenger compartment ceiling
on the left side.

The PASS OXY manual switch on P5 may also be used to

deploy the oxygen masks.

Functional Description

The latch arm is pushed down when the solenoid is

energized either automatically or manually. After it is
energized, the solenoid retracts a pin from the striker
to let the striker spring push down on the latch arm.
When the latch arm is pushed down, the latch is rotated
and the oxygen module door is released and falls down.

Training Information Point

A slot between the door and the passenger service unit

panel gives access to manually open the module. Use a
thin tool and push up on the latch arm.

OXYGEN SYSTEM -- PASSENGER OXYGEN CONTROL CIRCUIT
Functional Description

In the auto mode, the passenger oxygen system operates

at 14,000 feet cabin altitude by the aneroid switch.
When the latch solenoids are operated, the oxygen
module doors open and the masks drop from the PSUs. A
time delay relay removes power to the latch solenoids
after five seconds.

Relays for the system are in the P19 panel above the
ceiling in the forward left passenger cabin area. Power
is from the battery bus.

In the manual mode, operation of the passenger oxygen

system is by a guarded switch on the P5 panel. A time
delay relay removes power to the latch solenoids after
five seconds.

An amber light in the passenger system oxygen switch on

P5 panel comes on if the system is operated either in
the manual or automatic mode. An input to the Flight
Deck display is provided.
