THE PREACHER'S JOB DESCRIPTION

"I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you
with knowledge and understanding." Jeremiah 3:15

I. The preacher as shepherd

A. The shepherd's chief responsibility - I Peter 5:2-4

1. Feed the flock - prepare their meals - Psalm 23
2. Take oversight - watchful of each one - Zech. 11:17; John 10:1-5
3. "Not by restraint" - not because you MUST, but because you are willing

II. The preacher as an assistant to the pastor

A. "It takes more than mortal tongue can tell, to learn to play the second violin well."
B. The second violin position in an orchestra is subordinate to the first violin, and plays the harmony
notes to compliment the first violin's melody, thereby giving a soothing and blissful sound to the
ear. This is the job of the assistant pastor: to compliment the pastor.
C. The assistant pastor is subordinate to the pastor: simply, a helper.
D. In Colossians, chapter 4, Paul mentions Justus, Barnabas, Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Marcus,
Timothy and Luke as helpers in his Ministry. Paul commends them as, "...fellow workers...which
have been a comfort to me." In verse 17, Paul puts a fire under Archippus, who seemed to have
been a little lazy in fulfilling his duties. Paul commends Barnabas, and praises Epaphras' prayer life
and his zeal toward the saints. Paul consigns to Tychicus and Onesimus the task of scribing this
letter to the Colossians. In all, Paul lists no less than sixty-three persons who had assisted him in
some capacity. Less than ten of the sixty-three are familiar to us. The others remain relatively
unknown.

While there are no unknown soldiers in God's Army (God knows all), there are workers in God's
Kingdom, daily unseen performing unseen tasks vital to the work of God whose names are not
widely known. (I Chron 27:28)

THE FASTING PREACHER

B. Practical aspects of Biblical fasting for spiritual results:

1. How to fast: stop eating! Pray instead of eating.
2. What is fasting? True fasting is abstaining from food in any form for the length of the fast. For
instance, a one day fast would be the abstaining from any type of food for 24 hours.
3. Water is not a food and should be taken regularly for the duration of the fast. Do not go without water
any longer than three days.
4. Purified water is best if available.

C. Breaking the fast

1. A fast of three days should be followed with three days of slowly returning to normal diet. This rule
should be followed for a fast of any length.
2. A fast of more than three days should be broken with a few sips of broth during the day with diluted
juice for several days accompanied with light soups; no heavy meats for several days. Steamed
vegetables can be added to the diet (plenty of water), and avoid the endless choices of junk foods and
sodas. Follow this pattern until you have broken the fast the equal number of days of your fast.
3. These rules for breaking the fast are important, because an overloaded digestive system, after a fast of
several days or weeks, can cause severe pain, and can actually destroy the true effects of the fast. So,
stick to a light diet while breaking a fast of any duration.
4. The key to achieving your spiritual goals could be right under your nose.

D. How long should I fast?

There is no limit as to how long one should fast. One day a week would result in an incredible 52 days
in one year! How many people do you know that fast 52 days in a year? My recommendation is to
faithfully fast one day a week with a three-day fast each quarter. Consult with someone who knows a
little about fasting for long periods before entering fasts of more than 10 days.

THE STUDYING PREACHER

"Study, to Show thyself approved of God, a workman that needeth not to

be ashamed; rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Tim 3:16

I. What is study? - That process of seeing, feeling, understanding, and drawing conclusions.
Study is:

CONCENTRATION
PERCEPTION
REPETITION

A. When these seven principles are used regularly, ingrained habits of thought are formed.
B. The thought habits will conform to the thing being studied.
C. What you study determines the kind of habits that are formed - Philippians 4:8
D. The study of true, honest, just, pure, lovely, goodly, and virtuous things, with concentration, feeling,
understanding, perception, and repetition will make for presentations that will prove to get your message
across with results. Add prayer and fasting to this mixture and see what God and the anointing of His
Spirit will be able to accomplish in those you are trying to save and encourage.
E. Study is perceiving, not just learning facts.
F. Study is losing oneself into the reality of the subject.
G. Meditation is devotional, study is analytical.
H. Meditation is feeling, study finds the clear meaning of a thing.
I. The four steps of study:
1. Concentration
(a) centers the mind
(b) focuses attention on what is studied
(c) try to avoid studying where there are distractions
2. Comprehension
(a) focus on the truth of what is studied
(b) it is not just the truth, but the knowledge of the truth that sets men free
3. Spend plenty of time reflecting on the significance of what you are studying.
4. Repetition: ingrains habits of thought.

II. What study aids do I need?

A. The Bible is number one. A chain reference Bible is very helpful.

B. Studying for teaching and preaching is enhanced by Bible dictionaries, a good concordance, various
commentaries, and other articles and publications that lend to the subject (all need approval by your pastor
or elder).
C. Study demands humility:
(a) be subject to the subject
(b) mere accumulation of information is not knowledge

 D. Types of Study:
(a) select a subject
(b) verse by verse-expository
(c) book by book
(d) historical comparison with scriptures
(e) contemporary comparison with scriptures
(f) time line studies
(g) genealogical study
(h) character studies
(i) geographical studies
E. Why not strive to incorporate all of the above in your study?
F. All study must begin with prayer, clearing the mind to hear from God.
G. Pray with pen and paper handy to write down inspirations you get in prayer.
H. In prayer, stop long enough to listen for God's voice.
I. Study with the needs of the people in your heart, not with the notion that you must show-off your ability to
speak in fanciful terms to impress your congregation or your brethren.

III. What do I need to know?

A. We must know Jesus, Who is Truth - John 14:6

1. Paul - "...I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord...that I
may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His suffering...."
2. "For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him Crucified." I Cor. 2:2
3. Relationship with Jesus is number one. Study Him.

B. We must know the Truth:

1. Truth is the cornerstone of all we are and all we preach
2. Our entire existence, and all we are is based upon truth. - I Cor. 15:14
3. All are damned who believe not the truth - II Thess. 2:10, 11
4. We are begotten by the truth - James 1:18
5. We are Sanctified by the truth - John 17:17
6. We are Purified by the truth - I Peter 1:22
7. Our worship is in truth - John 4:23 (Amos 5:21)
8. Our Holy Ghost infilling is in truth - John 14:17; 15:26
9. Our judgement is based upon truth - Romans 2:2.
10. No one can be saved without Truth - I Tim. 2:4

IV. Why do I need to know the Word of God?

A. Preachers hold in their heart the words of eternal life. You have the power to influence mankind for
eternity. No power on earth has a more important influence upon man.
B. A preacher has the knowledge to lead people into paths of righteousness.
C. It was said to Jesus: "Thou hath the words of eternal life." (John 6:68) So does the Apostolic preacher.
D. Paul states that the Apostolic preacher is the "savour of death unto death...and life unto life..."
E. The Apostolic preacher is a watchman on the wall. *Isaiah 62:6 -" I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O
Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not
silence." We cannot be silent. We must speak out.
F. How important is the preacher's job?
1. Ezekiel 33:6-9 - Read verses 1-9
G. The preacher warns:
1. Acts 20:31 - Paul: " ....by the space of three years, I ceased not to warn every one night and day with
tears."
2. I Cor. 4:14 - Paul: " I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you."

THE COUNSELING PREACHER

7. Attitudes to watch for in those who come for counseling:

8. Never counsel the opposite sex without your spouse or some other respected person with you.

9. Do not be alone in a room, an automobile, or any other place with a woman who is not kin to you.

10. Preferable to counsel with husband and wife together.

11. Give counsel as if all you say is recorded.

12. Beware of too much intimacy in conversation.

13. Demand truth.

14. Watch for sincerity.

15. Watch for vindictiveness.

16. Watch for humbleness.

17. Leave with two or three points that can be built upon to work things out.

18. Leave with a “let me know how things work out” phrase.

19. Close each session with prayer.
