How to track the original location of an email via

its IP address
Posted on October 9, 2007 at 7:14 am

Here’s a qu ick how-to gu ide on how you can track email to it’s originating location by figu ring ou t
the email’s IP address and looking it u p. I have fou nd this to be qu ite u sefu l on many occasions for
verification pu rposes since I receive lots of emails daily du e to my blog. T racking the IP address of an
email sender does requ ire looking at some technical details, so be ready to dig you r heels in!

T here are basically two steps involved in the process of tracking an email: find the IP address in the
email header section and then look u p the location of the IP address.

Finding the IP addres s of an email s ender in GMail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook

Let’s go ahead and take a look at how you wou ld do this for Google, Yahoo and Ou tlook since those are
the most popu lar email clients.

Google’s Gmail

1. Log into you r accou nt and open the email in qu estion.

2. Click on the down arrow that’s to the right of the Reply link. Choose Show Original from the list.

Now here’s the technical part that I was telling you abou t earlier! You need to look for the lines of text
that start with “Received: from“. It might be easie r to simply press Cntrl + F and perform a search for
that phase. You ’ll notice that there are several Received From’s in the message header. T his is becau se
the message header contains the IP addresses of all of servers involved in rou ting that email to you .

To find the first compu ter that originally sent the email, you ’ll have to find t he Received From that’s
farthest DOWN. As you can see from the above image, the first one is from a compu ter called “as eem”
with the IP addres s 72.204.154.191. T hen it was rou ted to my ISP’s server at eas trmmtao104.cox.net
and so on and so forth till it got to you r email server.

T he compu ter as eem is my personal home compu ter and that’s my pu blic IP address for my hou se! I’ll
go throu gh Yahoo and Ou tlook before talking abou t tracking the location of that IP address.

Yahoo Mail Beta

1. Log into you r accou nt and open the email (if you ’re u sing Yahoo Mail Beta with the new preview
interface, make su re you dou ble-click on the email so that it opens in a new tab)

2. At the top right, you ’ll see there is a drop-down option where Standard Header is selected by defau lt.

3. Click on it and choose Full Header.

Again, you ’ll see the same information as before, ju st in a different window:

Micros oft Outlook

1. Open the email in Ou tlook by dou ble-clicking on it

2. Go to View at the top menu (t he menu options for the email, not the main Ou tlook window) and
choose Options .

You ’ll get a dialog box where you can set the message options and at the bottom you ’ll see the Internet
Headers box. For some silly reason, the box is very small and you have to scroll a lot , so it’s best to
simply copy and paste the text into Notepad to view it more easily.

Tracking the location of an IP addres s

Now that we have ou r originating IP address of 72.204.154.191, let’s find ou t where that is! You can do
this by perform a location looku p on the IP address. My favorites are IP2Location and GeoBytes IP
Locator.

GeoBytes gave me a big map of New Orleans, LA along with a bu nch of other information abou t the
location itself.

2 of 24 09/30/2010 11:36 AM
How to track the original location of an emai... http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-ti...

IP2Location also gave me the same information pretty mu ch, inclu ding the ISP (Cox Commu nications). Of
cou rse, this is correct since I live in New Orleans!

If you want more information, you can do a WHOIS database search also. My favorite one is the ARIN
WHOIS Database Search. T his will give you information on who hosts that IP address and their
registration information. You can always contact them to try and find more information on that particu lar
IP address.

Have fu n tracking down those emails! Qu estions, comments, or su ggestions? Post a comment!

bu t thats only if the sender u sed a mail client on his own compu ter. if the sender u ses gmail.com
web interface to send the mail, u ’ll ju st see googles server in the “recieved: from” section. not
u sefu l!

4. akishore said on : October 14th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Hi Beno,

I agree it’s not u sefu l if the email is sent from Gmail via a web browser. However, there are tons of
people who send emails from their office compu ters (Ou tlook, etc) and in those cases, tracking the
location wou ld be u sefu l!

T he IP shown isn’t necessarily the originating IP. I cou ld qu ite easily u se someones else IP range
and send emails.

7. Markus Diersbock said on : October 15th, 2007 at 4:19 am

T his isn’t always the case with webmail.

If you are in Eu rope getting you r mail, it will still

look like you are in the US.

T heir’s some good news with mail like HotMail, you

can check one of the X-headers like:

X-Originating-IP: [38.99.194.90]

8. TRaef06 said on : October 15th, 2007 at 5:32 am

Lexx – “In fact, the only part of the email header that can’t be faked is the Received: line, which
references you r mail server. Spammers often add spoofed Received: headers to try to hide the tru e
origin of the u nwanted email, bu t modern mail transfer programs record the sender’s correct IP
address. So even if the sender u ses a fictitiou s or false name when contacting the receiving server,
you can determine the origin of the spoofed message.”

searchsecu rity.techtarget.com/expert /KnowledgebaseAnswer/0,289625,sid14_gci1209058,00.ht ml

T he three way handshake that is part of every T CP commu nication prevents IP spoofing.

9. sadasd said on : October 15th, 2007 at 7:48 am

Not u sefu l: the LAST Received: line may be private IP, you have to look u p t he last non-private IP.

10. NotSoFast said on : October 15th, 2007 at 8:21 am

Be carefu l when relying on this information. Spoofing IP’s in emails is trivial.

11. TRaef06 said on : October 15th, 2007 at 8:45 am

You can’t spoof the originating IP address. Its part of the three way handshake. All the others are
easily spoofed.

T hat’s how SPAM filters check reverse DNS.

His article does state to u se the bottom IP address, which is the only one you can rely on.

Nice article!

T Raef06 and Dou g,

T hanks for the positive comments! I wasn’t meaning this to be a su per comprehensive gu ide to
detect the location of spam email. Mostly I’ve u sed this to track down emails from maliciou s
bu sinesses or individu als. Most of them don’t even know how to spoof an IP address!

T hanks!

Sou nds cool… Like it was being said above, it is not always the case whereby you can trace the mail

22. denon said on : November 2nd, 2007 at 8:25 am

Even if you have got a genu ine IP I can’t really see how u sefu l knowing the location of the ISP is
anyway. No ISP is going to tell you which of their u sers was u sing ‘x’ IP address on ‘x’ date at ‘x’ time
anyway.

For example, if I sent you an email from where I am and you looked the IP u p it wou ld tell you I’m in
Ipswich, UK. I am, however, abou t 40 miles from there, how u sefu l is this?

email accou nt to everyone in his friends list. He is now accu sing me of hacking into his accou nt and
forwarding the email myself. I DIDNT DO T HIS! He says he has friends who know abou t compu ters
and that he can prove the message i sent him and the forwarded message to his friends both came
from my ip address hence i mu st have done it. He said he went into my original email, right clicked
and went down to “view sou rce” and that gave him the ip address of the compu ter i sent the original
email from. He then said he went into the email that was forwarded from his hotmail accou nt and did
the same thigs ie. right clicked and “view sou rce” and said that the ip adresses matched so i had to
have hacked into his hotmail accou nt and forwarded the message myself. My qu ery is if someone has
hacked into my friends hotmail accou nt and forwarded my message how difficu lt wou ld it be to make
it seem it had come from my compu ter and my ip address? My friend is saying he can prove it was
me bu t it wasnt and im so u pset now. Not only are we not talking anymore bu t he is now threat ening
to take this fu rther and get police etc involved.
Someone help me please – i dont know what to do

T here’s never a qu estion of whether ISPs Want to divu lge their client’s IPs, they are all listed in one
WHOIS database or another, so it’s not really a “well, they won’t tell” issu e. And if a person does
ghost their IP, ju st do a simple tracer -t or pathping -i and follow the sou rce path that way, the real
IP will show. Spammers and misu sers of email services really stand no chance nowadays, ju st find
their IP ou t and locate it on a WHOIS database depending on where their location is, and then
contact the ISP or other local au thorities and their gone. If only more people actu ally knew and did
these things instead of chu cking everything into a Ju nk/Spam folder and letting it accu mu late
there… Cleaner int ernet=less lag and more fu n
