I'll have it tentatively scheduled for 1030 hrs on Friday. Has it been cleared through DHS? He'll also
want copies of everything you've already provided her.

(6) (b) (6) of US News and World Report is requesting a 30 minute interview with the Chief. Her
deadline is this weekend. (b) (6) lives in DC and only needs an hour advance notice if the Chief
agrees to interview. She also mentioned that the interview could be telephonic, but she would rather do
one on one taped. This sounds like a positive story on the innovative progress of the Border Patrol.
Please advice, I already mentioned to her how busy the Chief is.

Guys,

Can you start working on this and see if C-1 and Chief are available. The Chief is already aware of her
border visit and should just be a matter of getting on his schedule. Need to make the Chief aware of
her deadline.

Please work with (b) on getting C-1 onboard.

(6)
We also need to get her the latest stat comparisons.

Sorry to hear you're still on the road. I know how exhausting that can be. Just wanted to touch
base and see if you had any thoughts on a potential interview with Aguilar or Basham. Because of the
deadline, I would need to do something on this this week.
I'd appreciate your help and thanks so much for passing along my questions to DC. Please let me
know if for any reason you all think any of these stats are un-gettable.
Thanks,
Angie

Angela,

I am still on travel, regardless, I will forward this to our folks in DC and have them start pulling the
OBP005544

stats for you. I should be back in the office on Thursday.

Regards,

I haven't heard back from you from my message on Friday, so I'm going to send you a couple
preliminary requests for info for the story. I want it to have a nice national scope, and there are a few
stats that the local guys couldn't give me. Let me know if you think you can help out on this. I wouldn't
need these figures until Friday.

1. Agent Assault Statistics-- Do you have stats on the number of assaults reported against border patrol
agents on a national or sector-by-sector basis going back through FY 05? Yuma PIOs said that the
number of assaults there was up about 15 percent so far this fiscal year. I'd love to get a sense of if
this is a wider trend, and also some hard numbers to quantify how many assaults are actually
happening.

2. Wall and Vehicle Barrier Statistics-- For the last story, CBP provided for me on a sector-by-sector
basis figures for the number of miles of walls and vehicle barriers that are up so far. Could I get an
updated list from you, broken down like this:

Sector: Tucson
Fencing- X miles
Vehicle Barriers- X miles

And maybe you could note if there is additional fence or vehicle barriers in the works? (ie: a forecasted
number of miles of fence and vehicle barriers)?

3. Hiring Statistics- Of the 6,000 new agents you all plan to hire by 2008, how many have been hired
so far? How much turnover has there been? (ie: What is the net number of agents that have been
hired so far?) Are you all on target to meet your hiring goals?

4. Apprehension Statistics-- Do you have any more updated apprehension statistics that will be more
recent since the last quarter? (ie: the current quarter to date?)

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I wanted to get you started on those. I'd really appreciate your
help. Also: Do you think we might be able to do an interview with ***Chief Aguilar** or ** Ralph
Basham** this week? I'd really appreciate that. (b) at DHS HQ is going to take care of an interview
with Greg Giddens. (6)

Thanks-
Angie
