‘Flute’ is magical
February 9th through the 12th Lee University's Opera Theater de-
partment performed "The Magic Flute." Written by Mozart and first
performed September 30, 1791, the opera centers on the life of
young Tamino, who we find being chased by
Zach Skaggs
zskagg00@leeu.edu a dragon in the very first scene. Running for
his life, he is knocked unconscious by the
beast just as three mysterious ladies (who are later revealed to work
for the majestic "Queen of the Night") arrive and slay the beast,
saving his life. Soon after, Tamino meets Papageno, a strange bird-
man whose job is to find and catch birds for the queen in exchange
for food. The queen sends Tamino and Papageno on a mission to
save her daughter, Pamino, from the evil Sarastro. The men find
Pamino almost immediately, but as they try to return her to her
mother the plot really thickens due to a meeting with Sarastro him-
self, who appears to be an upright and noble man.
There were two casts for the performance in order to ensure both a
large amount of participation as well as to save some of the actor's
voices. I had experience with only the Alpha cast, but others I talked
to had similar experiences with the Omega cast. My first impression
was amazement at the talent that was before me. The voices of the
actors were astounding, and the orchestra was also doing a marvel-
ous job. The violins, my favorite instrument, played beautifully
throughout the show, but especially during the introduction piece.
The acting seemed somewhat lackluster early on in the show, but as Picture Drawn By: Cody, YMCA Home School Class

fortable and their acting improved dramatically. Not a single voice

In the seminar (Effectively Managing

Conflict), pupils first learned how to cor-

the benefits of conflict. Benefits, students

“It’s enlightening,” shared Nick Brouhard
during a break, “I like the format of it and

learned how to become aware of conflict
and explored coping mechanisms and how
to work to understand other perspectives.
Perhaps most interesting was the segment
dedicated to pointing out seven ways that
one can make conflict productive. Items
