A. Max Greenway (Police detective)
Officers promoted to this position usually come well-
prepared for the stress, but underestimate how boring it
can be! Yes, it can be exciting when you’re arresting
suspects or engaged in high-speed car chases, but
there’ s also a lot of paperwork. It’s hard to stay
motivated sometimes, especially when you’re working
overtime. You’ve got to be in this job because of the
responsibility that comes with it, not the glamour. I love
my work, but I manage to take a couple of weekends off
now and again to watch the football or go fishing. You
can’t do this job 365 days a year- it isn’t healthy.
B. Arlene O’ Hanlon (Lawyer)
Some people are convinced that lawyers are all
dishonest and money-hungry, and nothing will change
their minds. I know, I’ve tried to do it! I’m not saying that
lawyers do not deserve the reputation they have created,
but we are not always the villains! Fortunately, shows
like Ally McBeal and The Practice have shown law’s
more human side, even if they are not terribly realistic.
What’s true is that real-life courtrooms can be really
dramatic, with a witness crying, or a defendant shouting
at the judge. I find it hard to relax if I’m working on a
case, and I tend to be short of time for hobbies.
C. Anonymous (Spy)
Of course I have to keep a lot of secrets, even from
friends or family, which can be hard sometimes.
Frustratingly, I rarely get the chance to show off about
my job, as I have to tell people I am a bank manager! In
the James Bond films, spies have tremendously exciting
lives. In reality, the last thing a spy wants to do is call
people’s attention. Unlike Bond, I don’t carry weapons
and I don’t go to work wearing designer clothes because
I couldn’t afford it. I mainly investigate large-scale crime,
such as international fraud or suspected terrorism, which
can be very complex, and not that elegant!
D. Malcolm Burns (Prison officer)
If there is a drama that shows prison officers in a
flattering light, I haven’t seen it. In Prison Break, some of
the guards are worse than the criminals! In reality, most
of the officers are genuinely motivated by feeling they
can make a difference, and that prison is about more
than just punishment. My colleagues and I work hard to
help prisoners develop skills so that they do not commit
crimes again. One thief I used to work with is now a very
successful chef - earning good money instead of stealing
it! It’s stories like that that keep me going because trying
to keep order in a prison full of unhappy locked-up
inmates can sometimes feel less than rewarding.
E. Aisha Khan (Forensic scientist)
Since SCI and Bones, applications to study forensics
have increased, and now, annoyingly, I’m always being
followed by enthusiastic and exhausting students who
have lots of endless questions. Only a few years ago,
the subject was considered to be unusual or out of the
ordinary, which was part of what originally made me
choose this career, although I’ve learnt to value other
aspects now. I spend much more time in the laboratory
than the media would make everyone believe, but I
wouldn’t change it at all. I think analyzing details is really
rewarding, like putting together a puzzle. The good thing
is that no two days are the same in my life, whether I’m
trying to work out who robbed a bank or establishing the
identity of a murder victim.

DEPRESSION RISK STARTS IN THE WOMB

Medical treatment during pregnancy could lower the risk of future mental health problems in the child,

more than 8,000 mothers who had postnatal or antenatal depression. The risk is around 1.3 times higher than
normal at age 18, it found.

The study is published in JAMA Psychiatry. Lead researcher Dr Rebecca Pearson told the BBC: "Depression

risk to the child, although it is small." She said it was an association, not a causal link, and needed further
investigation.

Prof Carmine Pariante of King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry said the development of an

are depressed in pregnancy will not only alleviate their suffering but also the suffering of the next generation."

Prof Celso Arango of Gregorio Maranon General University Hospital, Madrid, said stress hormones are likely

getting pregnant, but if they are already pregnant when diagnosed with depression it is even more important
that they are treated as it will impact on the mother and child."

MERS: DEADLY CORONAVIRUS FOUND IN TOMB BAT

The virus was detected in a faecal sample taken from an Egyptian tomb bat 1) _____________(collect) close to the home

of the first known Mers victim. The research is published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. But while scientists

found a genetic match, they think it is unlikely that bats are responsible for passing the virus to humans. Instead they think
