To be Tyrone Johnson
means a lot of things,
so we tried to get inside
his head and under-
stand his normal rou-
tine this semester, find
out where he came
from and where he
plans on going in life,
and offer a glimpse at
the real personality that
sometimes seems hid-
den from view.
“When I first came to
Lee, I did not want to
be popular,” offers
Tyrone in his usual,
friendly voice, “I just
wanted to make
friends.” He has more
than succeeded in his
task. Johnson currently

groups about him, with a com-
bined total of approximately
ninety members. That is in addi-
tion to the 486 friends he has
listed on his profile page.
We went to Andrew Pope, crea-
tor and webmaster of one on
Johnson’s online followings and
asked him about the hype.
“I think the reason that Tyrone
has such a following,” Pope said,
“is because he has he has given
you no choice but to be a part of
his 'following.' It's kind of like
when you were little and you had
to watch Mighty Morphin Power
Rangers because nothing else
was on T.V. right after school.
You were forced to watch it, but
somehow loved it. The pink
ranger was hot anyways.”
Despite the disputed “hotness”
of the pink power ranger, the
question remains: why is this
young man so persistent about
making new friendships?
“When I first came [to Lee] I
didn’t know anybody. I just
wanted to make new friends. I
like to know people; I like being
in other people’s lives,” Johnson
says with a smile.
It’s known fact that Johnson has
not had a girlfriend since he
arrived at Lee so we asked him
why. Here is his response:
“When God [shows me] the
person he wants me to date, I’ll
talk to that person. I think Lee
has a lot of really cute girls. I
don’t believe in dating anymore;
I believe in courtship and mar-
riage.”
Tyrone, like everyone else at
Lee, has a back story, a history of
life that has influenced who he is
today. Tyrone was saved at the
age of four but rededicated his
life to the Lord on October 26,
2003. His mother works as a
registered nurse and his father
serves s an operations officer for
T Rowe Investments.
Throughout high school Johnson
kept active by playing football,
running track, and joining the
wrestling team. He was also in-
volved in the student government
and in the sports science magnum
program. For four years Tyrone
served as a drill instructor and
counselor in the PROTC program
for middle schoolers. He was
blessed to be able to keep so
involved considering that his
school was forty-five minutes
from his home.

Tyrone Johnson (continued from page 1)
The story of how Tyrone made it to Lee is
especially interesting. It all began, he tells us,
during his sophomore year of high school. The
day before he was scheduled to leave for Win-
terfest 2002 he had been playing basketball
with friends. As he went for a rebound Tyrone
fell backwards and cracked his head.
It seemed as if his trip was cancelled. His
mother, afraid he might have a concussion,
would not let her son go on any trip. But de-
spite her insistence that he stay, Tyrone left the
very next day for Winterfest.
Some very important things happened to
Tyrone on his trip. These were events that
became pivotal in the story of who he is today.
After a few nights of strong sermons and dra-
matic experiences at the alter, Tyrone packed
his bags and headed back home.
On his very first day following his arrival
home things seemed to take a turn for the
worst. He woke up late for school, missing the
bus, and, as he prepared for his day, he heard a
voice in the back of his head telling him that it
would be the worst day of his life.
His mother transported him to campus where
everything just seemed to go wrong and every
test he took he failed. After school, Tyrone was
forced to walk home through the snow. It was
during this time, when he felt positively awful,
that a debate began to rage inside his head.
“Should I still be a Christian,” he asked him-
self. He never wanted to go through such
misery again. But the next moment, one that
would define the remainder of his existence,
he began to sing Christian music as he walked
home. He continued to sing, even as shouts of
“shut up” filled the street. After arriving home,
he told his mother he needed to go to revival.
The next day, after reading a card from his
mother, test scores improved again and eve-
rything else just seemed to be right back on
track.
By his junior year of high school, Johnson was
ready to look at colleges. He applied to Palm
Beach but had only talked about Lee in pass-
ing one year earlier. While he was still
searching, he came across a page about Lee in
a college book. It was then he made the deci-
sion to apply.
“I didn’t have money for Lee,” Tyrone recalls.
He came down on June eighteenth for pre-
registration but his mother warned him not to
apply until they had found a way to fund the
college education.
“I applied to Lee for all the wrong reasons,”
Tyrone states. He says he wanted to get far
away from home. A short time later, he re-
ceived notice of his rejection from the institu-
tion.
Things, however, soon turned around. A few
weeks later, the phone rang. Lee University
asked if Tyrone still wanted to come to Lee.

Tyrone quickly filled out one more application
and sent it off to Tennessee.
Three times a week he called Lee, hoping for a
reply, waiting to discover if he had in fact been
chosen. And eventually, the news came- he
had been accepted to Lee.
One week before school began last semester,
Johnson reaped the benefits of applying for
financial aid. Thankfully and finally, he had a
way to pay for college.
“I think Tyrone has a very positive outlook on
life which is manifest in his treatment of his

Pajammy Jam provides food & fun

Campus Greek club Theta Delta Kappa
threw an amazing casual get-together
at 7:00PM in the Paul Conn Student
Union.
We talked to one of the club’s newest
members who successfully rushed for
the group last month. Nicholas Helton,
a RA for O’Bannon hall praised the
Student Leadership Council (SLC) for
helping out with the event. The group
helped to serve guests special sub
sandwiches and scoop bowls of ice
cream in addition to setting up before-
hand and cleaning up the mess that
was left afterwards.
“There wasn’t an overwhelming
crowd there,” states Helton, but it
turned out much better because of that.
The room was not crowded and any-
one could take part in activities with-
out having to wait. “It went well,” he
said.
The club set up inflatable Twister, a
huge hit with the college crowd, and
also played limbo. In the back of the
building a huge screen was set up to
display “Loony Toons” animation.

The event, although not
completely filled with
pajama-clad people, was
definitely a success.

cream (including choco-
late, vanilla, strawberry,
and chocolate swirl) were
complimented by a gi-
gantic selection of sweet
toppings.
Once the party had ended
and students had gone
home to rest, plenty of sub
sandwiches had been left
over. Theta Delta Kappa
was able to put that food to
good use the next day at a
meeting they held.
Some students complained
that the event had been
poorly advertised. Many
did not even know it was being put on. Kendall Schaibley and Lisa Orient enjoy their amazing
servings of ice cream at the Pajammy Jam last Friday.
“It’s something they should improve
on next year,” declared one student
who wished not to be named. But re-
gardless of how well-attended it is, we
know next year’s Pajammy Jam will
be just as memorable, if not more so,
than this one.

Brandon Fenty, an O’Ban-
non resident originally from
Springboro, Ohio created
this week’s masterpiece, “King Conn.”
! Brandon designed the piece on a com-
puter, overlaying a digital cut-out of President
Conn’s face onto the roaring body of King Kong,
originally from an old comic book. The word
“KONG” was changed to “CONN” by cloning
the “N” and shaping the “C” from the “G” on the
end of “KING.”
! While at Lee, Brandon is concentrating
on Computer Information Systems and Spanish
studies.

The Complete Bible?
We were surprised by the results too. Nearly half of Lee students have not read
the entire Bible once in their lives. A smaller amount had at least read the Bible
once and even fewer read it more than that. Females (the lighter shade) proved 17.50
to have read the Holy Bible much more than males (complete black).

*This is not a scientific survey. A random sixty students were surveyed for the purpose 8.75
of this study.

Vertical numbers represent the amount of students. The horizontal numbers 0

represent the number of times the complete Bible has been read.
