BARANGAYS OF MOTIONG. Very timely for the 101st fiesta celebration of the Immaculate Conception of
Mary, the town's patroness, I would like to share this to you a brief historical note on the development of
barrios of Motiong during the early years when it became a short-lived town and after it was again re-made an
independent town separate from the municipal town of Wright (now Paranas).

The beginnings of Motiong started when it was a visita (a large community having a small capilla/church
being visited by priest from the poblacion) of the pueblo of Paranas in the late 19th century. After the end of
the Spanish Colonial Regime and the coming of the Americans, Motiong became a short-lived town when it
was elevated by the Americans as an independent municipality from Paranas in 1903. It had a population of
3,352 from four barrios namely:
- Poblacion (Town Center)
- Buan (Later would be created a separate town)
- Bonga
- Calapi

However, the township of Motiong took no longer for it was deprived its status as a town and was joined again
to Paranas by virtue of the provision of the Philippine Commission Act. No. 960, “An Act Reducing the Forty-
Three Municipalities of the Province of Samar to Twenty-Five,” dated 23 October 1903.
