MECHANICS OF MATERIALS
(Date of document: 3th August 2016)
Course Description : This course provides the scientific basis for understanding of the
deformation of solids under different loading conditions such
as axial, shearing, torsional and bending. Basic concepts of
stress and strain as well as the various mechanics theories
associated with the different types of loading conditions will be
introduced. In addition, the stiffness aspects such as axial
deformation, degree of twist and deflection, of beams and
members under loading will also be analyzed.

Course Objectives : At the end of the course the students should be able to:
CO1 Able to compute and explain the effects of static loading on mechanical structures or
components.
CO2 Able to define normal stress, strain, Poisson’s ratio, modulus of elasticity, proportional
limit, elastic limit, yield point, homogeneous and linearly elastic materials.
CO4 Able to calculate the shearing stresses, angular deflection and strains on circular torsion
members subjected to twisting couples.
Able to determine the maximum tensile and compressive flexure stress in a given beam
CO5 and state where it occurs to solve engineering problems based on loading applied to the
beam.
Able to derive the shear and bending moment equations, and construct shear and
CO6 bending-moment diagram for beams loaded with concentrated and or uniformly
distributed loads.
Able to determine the maximum horizontal or vertical shearing stress in a given beam
CO7 and state where it occurs to solve engineering problems based on transverse loading
applied to the beam.
Able to calculate the lateral deflections of long slender beams by the method of
CO9
integration.
