1. Print
• oldest form of medium.
• relies on the technology involving the
process of transferring media text to
paper in large quantities
• In the Philippines, it is represented by
books, newspapers, tabloids, magazines
journals, newsletters and komiks.
NEWSPAPER
• lightweight and disposable publication printed on
low-cost recycled paper aptly called newsprint.
• The term Broadsheet is used to refer to
mainstream newspapers that have large paper
sizes (305mm x 508 mm
• Tabloids are more compact width and length
(280mm x 430 mm)
• 13 nationally distributed broadsheets
• 300 to 400 provincial papers
MAGAZINES
• these usually cater to audience with special interest.
• can also be characterized by the paper they use for
printing. For example, glossy magazines include
fashion magazines, lifestyle magazines, travel
magazines, food magazines and newsprint
magazines.
• Magazines in the Philippines are owned by big media
corporations. For example Gokongwei family owns
Summit Media which produces Preview,
Cosmopolitan and Hello.
KOMIKS
• Filipino version of American comic book
• primarily for entertainment purposes but it is also
used by government and NGOs as a medium to
bring messages to mass audiences.
2. Broadcast Media
• such as TV and radio, can be defined as media that
distribute audio and video content via VHF or UHF
airwaves.
• in the case of cable tv, it is coaxial cables or fiber
optics
RADIO
• The PH has 400 radio stations on the AM band and
844 on FM band. (NTC)
• In the NCR, 31 AM and 25 FM stations
• DZRH, the oldest existing radio station in the
Philippines (July 15, 1939 as KZRH) – MBC
• Average of 20 hours a week for radio (5am to 10 am
and 3pm to 6pm); 6pm to 10 PM (TV) – KBP

TELEVISION (TV)
• Has become more popular medium than the radio
• Has replaced print media as the primary source of news.
• 388 registered TV stations in the country (NTC)
• 1137 cable tv networks in the country (NTC, 2012)
• Local networks may have affiliate cable channels.
• ABS-CBN – ANC
• Through cable, the Filipino audience are able to access
foreign cable channels.
