DVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SYSTEM WITH FEEDBACK

The closed loop system or system with feedback has numerous advantages as follows:

i) The accuracy of this system is very high because the controller manipulates the signal
to generate zero error signals.
ii) It becomes less sensitive to non-linearity and environmental changes.
iii) The bandwidth of this system is very high.
iv) Sensor plays a vital role. It senses the response and generates the feedback signal.
v) This type of system is more reliable and faster.
vi) This system is robust as compared to open loop system due to feedback.
vii) It is an automatic adjusting system where an intelligent controller adjusts to reduce
error signal and make response follow the input.
In spite of its advantages, it suffers from the following drawbacks:
i) The sensor inside as a feedback element produces unwanted high frequency noise. It
can be eliminated by injecting a noise filter in the system.
ii) Instability arises due to accuracy causing oscillations It can be made stable by using
many methods like root locus, nyquist stability criteria, bode plot.
iii) Though the system is quite fast but sometimes time lag is introduced due to feedback.
iv) Its design is complicated hence it is costly as compared to open loop system.

losed Loop System:

Advantages:
1. Accuracy: They are more accurate than open loop system due to their
complex construction. They are equally accurate and are not disturbed in the
presence of non-linearities.
2. Noise reduction ability: Since they are composed of a feedback
mechanism, so they clear out the errors between input and output signals, and
hence remain unaffected to the external noise sources.

Disadvantages:
1. Construction: They are relatively more complex in construction and hence
it adds up to the cost making it costlier than open loop system.
2. Since it consists of feedback loop, it may create oscillatory response of the
system and it also reduces the overall gain of the system.
3. Stability: It is less stable than open loop system but this disadvantage can
be striked off since we can make the sensitivity of the system very small so as to
make the system as stable as possible.

he following advantages are the fundamental reasons for using

feedback.
1. Many unnecessary disturbances and noise signals from outside
the system can be rejected.
2. The change in the performance of the system due to
parameter variations is reduced.
3. The steady-state error of the system can be relatively small.
4. The transient behavior of the process can be easily
manipulated.
On the other hand, using feedback can have
severaldisadvantages:
1. The system is complicated by the increased number of
components, such as sensors and error detectors.
2. The overall gain of the system is reduced and must be
compensated for in design.
3. The system may not be stable (it may oscillate or depart greatly
from the desired output), even though the comparable open-
loop system is stable.
Because the advantages of feedback exceed its disadvantages in
most cases, feedback has become the major concept in the
design of control system.
