KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia- Josephine Medina trampled
her Indonesian opponent in her tricky placings to seize
gold medal in table tennis, closing the Philippines haul
in the 9th ASEAN Para Games with a total of 20 gold at
Bukit Jalil National Stadium, September 23, 2017.

The 47 year old Rio Paralympics bronze medalist swept

a 3-1 (12-10, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9) win against the hapless
Indo-paddler.

The Philippines grabbed 20 gold, 20 silver and 29 bronze

medals pinned as the 5th overall behind the runaway
champion Indonesia (126-75-50), host Malaysia (90-85-
84), followed by Thailand (68-73-94) and Vietnam (40-
61-60).

Compared to the 16-17-26 haul in the 2015 Singapore

Games, the Philippines made a big improvement.

Meanwhile, in athletics, teen sprinter Cielo Honasan

and wheelchair-bound thrower Cendy Asusano drew
strength and boost their agility clipping 9 gold, 5 silver,
6 bronze medals, four greater than their haul in
Singapore.

Chess, spearheaded by triple-gold medal woodpusher

and FIDE Master—Sander Severino, falls short in its
seven-gold marker but still manage to top as the
country’s second-best performing spot with 4 gold, 3
silver and 6 bronze.

Ernie Gawilan bested his rivals in the men’s 200 meter

individual medley and successfully defended the 400
meter freestyle gold. However, he settled silver in 100m
butterfly and copped two bronze in both 4x100 meter
medley and freestyle relay.

Cyclist Arthus Bucay, tenpin bowler Christopher Yue and

powerlifter Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta each gave
bacon to Philippines receptacle after reaping gold
medals in their events.

Although the PH para-team failed to reach its target of

27 gold medals, chef de mission Ral Rosario said it’s still
a source of pride.

“We went home with 20 gold medals, four more than

what we took home in Singapore. That’s all that
matters,” Rosario added.
