Murgan Temples in Thanjavur District

Subramanya Swamy temple at Ettukudi

Ettukudi Murugan or the Subramanya Swamy temple at Ettukudi, though not one of the
Arupadai veedu - or Six Sacred Temples of Lord Muruga, achieved popularity mainly through
veneration in songs including by the 14th century Tamil poet Saint Arunagirinathar and
today, through folk music (kaavadi cindhu) and other devotional songs. This temple is
famous for its kaavadi procession. One of the unique features of this temple is position of
the peacock, the mount of Murugan. The head of the peacock in all Murugan temples is
seen facing the right side. However, in Ettukudi, it is seen facing the left. This fact is also
mentioned in the Kandapuranam.

This temple is linked closely with the temples in Sikkal and Ennkann through the legend that
the images of Skanda in all three of these shrines were made by the same sculptor. The
story (there are variants to this story but they are very similar) is that the sculptor who
made the Subramanyar image of Sikkal was awe struck by its quality that he vowed that no
other such image should be made, and cut off his right thumb (though one variant claims it
was the Chola king who had it cut off).

He was then prompted by Subramanyar in a dream, to fashion another image for the shrine
at Ettukudi. He followed the instructions in his dream, and when the image was complete,
blinded himself (or the king blinded him as per the variant) so that he could not create
images any more. Another dream prompted him to create a third image of Skanda mounted
on a peacock with the aid of a woman (some say his daughter), when his chisel inflicted
injury upon her; the blood that gushed forth splashed over his eyes, and in a flash he
recovered his eyesight miraculously, and in a spate of poetry revered Skanda. The first
phrase that he uttered upon recovering his eyesight was 'EnKann' (my eyes)- hence the
name of that temple.
Sikkal Singaravelavar, Nagapattinam District

Sikkal is situated about five kilometers from Nagapattinam on the Nagapattinam-Tiruvarur route.

Actually this is a Saiva temple with Lord Siva bearing the name Śrī Navaneetheswara. But the main
deity is Lord Subrahmanya called Singaravelavar. Sage Vasishta made a sivalinga made of butter
obtained from the milk of the divine cow Kamadhenu for worship. After puja, the sivalinga could not
be shifted and got stuck and hence the name sikkal in Tamil for this place. This temple was
worshipped by sages Vasishta, Viswamitra, wish-granting cow Kamadenu and Emperor Muchukunda
of Deva Loka. Saints Sambandhar and Arunagirinathar have sung in praise of the Lord Sikkal
Singaravelavar.

The name of the goddess in the standing posture here is Velnedunganni. Ganapati, Mahalakshmi,
Nataraja, the sixty three Nayanmars, Bhairava, Surya and Chandra are also having sannadhis at the
respective places as per agamic standards. The sthala vriksha (sacred tree) here is jasmine. There are
three holy tanks for this temple namely Ksheera (ie. milk), Gaya and Lakshmi Tanks.

During the Tamil month of Arpasi, Skanda Shashti is celebrated in a grand manner for the main ruling
deity Singaravelavar. Tradition tells us that the Lord received the Vel at Sikkal and killed Surapadman
at Tiruchendur the next day. During Skanda Shashti, Lord Singaravelavar will receive the Vel one day
prior to Surasamharam from his mother to destroy the demon Surapadman. After receiving the Vel
even today, one will find Muruga's face perspiring, which is a miracle. The Singaravelavar is in the
form of utsavamurti with his consorts Valli and Devayanai, showering his divine grace.

Legend has it that Muchukunda Cholan, associated with the Tiruvarur legend built this temple.
Vasishta is said to have prayed to Shiva to recover his Kamadhenu, whose milk flowed and froze to
form butter. Fashioning a lingam out of butter (Venneippiran), Vasishtar tried in vain to move it; it
had gotten stuck (sikkal). Interestingly, Tirukkannankudi - a Vaishnava Divyadesam (near Keevalur
nearby) has a legend associated with Vasishtar offering worship to an image of Krishna which he had
fashioned out of butter. The Ksheera Pushkarini (Paal Kulam) tank is located behind the temple.
Legend also has it that Vishnu sought the blessings of Shiva before venturing out to the court of the
demon king Mahabali, and there is a Kola Vaamana Perumaal shrine adjacent to the temple.
Temple: The seven-tiered rajagopuram that adorns the entrance to this temple is about 80 feet in
height. Inscriptions from the imperial Chola period and from the Vijayanagar period abound in this
temple which covers an area of about two acres. The Kartikai Mandapam in the forefront exhibits a
number of paintings depicting legends related to Subramanya.

Festivals: Six worship services are offered each day here. A number of marriages are performed in
this temple in the kalyana mandapam. The annual brahmotsavam is celebrated in the month of
Cittirai. Singaravelar receives his Vel (spear) from Devi during Skanda Sashti festival in the month of
Libra; and it is believed that his image then breaks out in sweat. Soorasamharam is enacted here
during this festival.

king prayed to Enkan Lord Muruga bathing in the Vruddha Cauveri River (Vottaru). On a Thain
Poosam star day (January-February) combined with Full Moon, Lord Muruga appeared before the
king and restored his human face. This festival day is grandly celebrated in the temple carrying
Kavadi on their shoulders. Other festivals are monthly Kruthika star days, 8 day Skanda Sashti in

Deepavali, Pongal, Tamil and English New Year Days.

Temple's Speciality:

In the month of Panguni (March-April), the rays of Sun fall on Lord Brahmmapureeswarar for
three days. It is noteworthy that the idols of Lord Muruga in Sikkal, Ettukudi and Enkan temples were
sculpted by the same artist showing the Lord on His peacock vehicle. The idols are made with rare
sculptural skill that the whole weight of the idol rests on a single leg of the peacock. A rare
craftsmanship.

Opening Time: The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Address: Sri Subramaniaswami Temple, Enkan, Tiruvarur district.

Phone: +91 -4366-278 531, 278 014, 94884 15137

General Information:

The temple was built during the rule of Kulothungan II. Though a Shiva temple, Lord
Muruga enjoys greater importance here. Presiding deity graces in the name of Lord
Brahmmapureeswarar and Lord Vinayaka as Nardana Vinayaka.

Prayers :

Devotees pray for restoration from impaired vision. They also undertake fasting on
Tuesdays for good health free from any ailment and on Kruthika star days for prosperity. Those
facing adverse aspects of planet Jupiter light ghee lamps on Thursdays and are blessed with wisdom,
education and prosperity. Devotees also pray for happy wed lock, child boon, job opportunities,
trade developments and promotion in jobs. Lord Muruga takes all care of his devotees.

Thanks giving:

Devotees perform abishek to Lord Muruga with milk, curd, honey, rosewater, sandal,
turmeric, oil, scented powders, panchamirtham made of five ingredients etc. They carry Kavadi, offer
hair by tonsuring, sheep and cocks and their farm yields. They offer vastras to Lord
Brahmmapureeswara and Mother Periyanayaki. Arrange feeding, distribution of Prasad to visiting
devotees and offer what they could for the maintenance and renovation projects of the temple.
Greatness of Temple:

The shrine of Lord Muruga is called Sabha as He has the attributes of Lord Shiva and facing
South. The Sabha is a hall where Lord Nataraja performed His dance, an importance related to
Chidambaram temple. Also, Lord Muruga’s facing south has two philosophies. Lord
Dakshinamurthy is a south facing God granting wisdom to devotees. Yama the God of Death belongs
to the South. Lord Muruga protects His devotees from fear of death ensuring longevity. Many had
experienced these effects praying to the Lord.

The one wonder of the temple is that those suffering from impaired vision are blessed with
bright eye sight if they perform Shanmugarchana to Lord Muruga continuously for 12 months on
each Vishaka star days. Lord Muruga graces from His shrine sitting on the peacock vehicle with His
consorts Valli and Deivanai.

Of the six faces of the Lord, three are in front and three behind. The Lord holds Vel his
special weapon, arrow, sword, discus, pasam the rope, trident, bow, armour, cock flag angusam etc.
in His 12 hands. The gap between the fingers are clearly visible, a sculptural marvel. The other
wonder is that the entire weight of the idol firmly stands on a single leg of the peacock. Here is the
story of the idol.

Chola king Mutharasan, seeing the beauty of the idol of Muruga thought there should be no
such idol anywhere. So, he claimed the right thumb of the sculptor.Yet, the sculptor made a similar
beautiful idol for the Ettukudi temple without the support of the right thumb. The jealous king went
further and plucked off the eyes of the sculptor. He came to Sameevanam and started working on a
third idol with the help of a little girl. When the idol was nearing completion, the chistle (Uli) fell on
the girl’s eyes spilling blood on the sculptor’s eyes restoring his eye sight. Sameevanam is now
known as Enkan.

Enkan is also the place where Brahamma worshipped Lord Shiva with His eight eyes. This is
the place where Lord Muruga taught Pranava Mantra to Brahmma obeying His Father’s directions.
Sage Arunagiriar has sung the glory of the place in his Tirupuazh hymns.

Temple History:

Lord Muruga demanded Lord Brahmma to explain the meaning of Pranava Mantra. He
could not. Lord Muruga put Brahamma in prison and took up the creation job too. Though
Brahmma was released later, he could not get back His assignment. Brahamma began worshipping
Lord Shiva with His eight eyes. When Lord Shiva asked Muruga to leave the job to Brahamma,
Muruga politely refused saying that He was not qualified for the job as He did not know the meaning
of Pranava. Lord Shiva advised Muruga to teach the Mantra to Brahmma and reinstate Him in his
place. Lord Muruga obeyed His Father and taught Pranava to Brahamma. As Brahmma worshipped
Lord Shiva with His eight eyes (En Kan), the place also came to be known as Brahmmapuram. So
goes the sthala purana – story of the land.

Special Features:
Miracle Based: In the month of Panguni (March-April), the rays of Sun fall on Lord
Brahmmapureeswarar for three days.

Temple's Speciality:

Lord Muruga graces devotees in His best attire. He looks with a ripe, wise and philosophical
look during the Vibuthi (sacred ash) abishek, a majestic Balasubramania in Sandal abishek. If one
closely observes the sanctum sanctorum, the peeta – stage- on which the Lord stands looks like the
Shivlinga Avudayar and the Lord as Shivalinga itself. This represents the philosophy that Lord Shiva
and Lord Muruga are but one and not different from each other. In the place of the traditional
peacock before the Lord, there is elephant here, which was gifted by Indira after the destruction of
demon Harikesa, according to scriptures.

Opening Time: The temple is open from 5.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Phone: +91- 435- 245 4421

General Information:

There are no hills in Thanjavur district. It is in this region, Swamimalai stands. As hills are the
abodes of Lord Muruga, He is gracing from this hill temple. There are 60 steps to reach the hill
temple representing the 60 Tamil Years. These are considered at par with the importance of 18
steps in Sabarimala. The deities of the Tamil years are praying to Lord Muruga in the form of steps.
Hence, the Padi Puja (puja for the steps) is conducted on Tamil and English New Year days with
coconuts, fruits and singing hymns.

Prayers

Lord Muruga is the destination for solution of all problems in human life. People appeal to the
Lord for happy wedding life, child boon, family prosperity, longevity, education, wisdom, higher
education, job opportunities, promotion in jobs and for removal of obstacles in their various
endeavours.

Thanks giving:

are performed by devotees. Feeding is undertaken by some. Devotees light ghee lamps. Carry milk
pots and Kavadi and arrange pujas. Those facing enemy troubles perform Thirisada archana. The rich
offer liberal contributions for the maintenance and renovation of the temple.
Greatness Of Temple:

Swamimalai is the 4th Padiaveedu (army camp) of Lord Muruga. This is where He taught His
Father Himself-Lord Shiva. Six feet tall Lord Muruga graces with His tuft, sacred thread on the chest
and a staff in the right hand and the left on the lap. It is His Vel weapon that created the Nethra
theertha in the temple. He graces in meditation style as a Guru.

He graces with the Vajra Vel representing three divine powers – Itcha Shakti, Gnana Shakti and Kriya
Shakti. Mother Earth worshipped Lord Muruga for relief from a curse of Mother Parvathi and even
after realizing Her boon, She is staying here in the form of a gooseberry tree.

Swamimalai temple is praised in the hymns of Arunagiriar’s Tirupugazh and in Tirumugattrupadai by

poet Nakkeerar considered as the invocation song in Sangam Tamil literature edition. Brahmma,
Bhoomadevi, Indira worshipped the Lord in this temple. As the Lord was a Guru to His own Father
Lord Shiva, the place is revered as Gurumalai, Gurugiri.

Temple History:

It is a popular story that Brahamma the Creator bypassed Lord Muruga when both met on an
occasion without offering the respect to the Young Lord which He deserved. Muruga intercepted
Brahmma and demanded the meaning of the Pranava Mantra Ohm. The Creator could not answer.
Muruga pounced on Brahmmas four heads and put him in prison as he was not qualified for the
creation job. He began creation Himself. Vishnu appealed to Lord Shiva for the release of Brahmma.
Muruga obeyed His father’s order. When Lord Shiva asked the Son to explain the meaning of Ohm,
the Young Son explained the meaning in detail, but secretly close to Father’s ears as this is such a
holy mantra which the righteous and wise alone should know. The event took place in this sacred
soil.

Special Features:

Miracle Based: Tamil word Murugu means all youthfulness and handsomeness. Needless to say
that Lord Muruga is handsomeness personified. He shines in every dress-Alankara. He is a ripe
spiritual leader in Vibuti abishek, a Majestic Balasubramania in Sandal abishek. If we look closely at
the sanctum sanctorum, Lord Muruga appears as the Bana part of a Shivalinga and the peeta as the
Avudayar. This is to emphasize the truth that Lord Muruga and Lord Shiva are not different from
each other but one. In the place of peacock as the Vahan, an elephant is before the sanctum. It is
said that an elephant Harikesan by name, earlier a demon, worshipped Lord Muruga. This is the
elephant, the famous Iravadham gifted to Lord Muruga, according to Puranas.
