CHKDSK short for Check Disk checks the state of the hard drive and correct any errors it nds, if possible. It can be
useful for troubleshooting read errors and other storage related errors. It has been in Windows for quite a time. There
are multiple ways of starting CHKDSK in Windows 10, in this tutorial we will show you the 3 most common ways.

Run CHKDSK trough This PC.

1. Open File Explorer (Former known as Windows Explorer).

2. Click on This PC.

3. Right-click the Hard Disk you wish to run CHKDSK on.

4. Click on Properties

5. Click on Tools in the Properties window.

6. Under Error-Checking, click on Check.

Run CHKDSK trough Command Prompt

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt (Press the Windows + X button at the same time, then choose Command Prompt
(Admin))

2. Type the following command, and replace the X with the drive letter you wish to scan: “CHKDSK X:”, we suggest you
use “CHKDSK X: /F”, only then it can correct errors. 

3. Hit the enter key, Command Prompt will now start CHKDSK.

How to Run CHKDSK in Windows 10

Run CHKDSK from Cortana

1. Simply type the same command as you would type in Command Prompt, so CHKDSK X: /F and replace the X: with the
drive letter you wish to scan.

2. Cortana will automatically start Command Prompt and Execute the command.

CHDSK worked for me in windows 10. I had problems with the disc showing 100% in task manager. the chkdsk
command worked when all else failed

My Dell HD test said bad disk, buy a new one (bad sectors)
I ran the (admin) DOS command above chkdsk c: /f
I let it run on restart
Fixed and no more bad sectors. HD OK

Thanks for the CHKDSK option. It worked on our Windows 10 machine that was not booting and the Windows 10 repair
stuff was not working at all. Even a Reset did not work. After the chkdsk c: /f the C drive was repaired and on reboot Win
10 started up normally! BIG THANKS

Alison is the lucky one. I am running the command on a 1TB disk and it says it will take 223 hours! Surely there is a
quicker way to x a bad disk?

Hello,

How long should it take the run the disk check through the “This PC” method (the 1st method described)? After a power
outage my desktop is running so slow it’s impossible to do anything on it and I remember the chk dsk command from
very early pc days. My desktop is currently telling me that it’s Error Checking the local disk (the one I told it to) and
about 11 hours and 30 mins remaining – the time is actually increasing – it started off with mins and then 3 hours and
now it’s at 12 hours. Is this actually correct or is this an indication of a disk problem?

Without more investigation its hard to say however your feeling does match mine. It does seem like there is
something wrong with the disk.

Are you sure you started Command Prompt with Administrative Rights? You receive error code 5 I assume?
