Guide Questions in Behavior Therapy

1. Lazarus succeeded in getting Ruth to agree to take a brisk walk at least three
times a week. As a behavior therapist, how would deal with her if she told you
that she have not kept her agreement to carry out her exercise?

2. In what ways did Lazarus work with Ruth’s past in helping her understand her
present conditions? Do you think that for a change to occur in her current
situation she must go back to her past and work out unfinished business?
Explain.

3. If you will conduct a behaviorally oriented session, what homework might you
suggest to them as a couple? Do you have any suggestions for specific
behavioral assignments for each individual?

4. Using other behavioral techniques, show how you might proceed with Ruth if
you were working with. Use whatever you know about her so far and what you
know about behavior therapy approaches to show in what directions you
would move her?

1. You focused on Ruth’s family schemata, including beliefs from her family of
origin and those in her current family. What uses can you see in working with
family schemata? What are some advantages of using a cognitive behavioral
approach in counseling couple? Any disadvantages?

2. What might you do if Ruth came from a background where her”musts” “oughts
“and “shoulds” arose out of her cultural conditioning? What if she insisted that
she felt guilty when she dared to question her upbringing and that her culture
doing so was frowned upon?
