That All May Worship: Meeting Special Needs

Temple wants no one to miss the chance to worship during the Holidays,
or year-round, because of difficulty in attending or special hearing, vision
or mobility requirements. A few of the ways we can help:
• Assistive listening devices are available at all services, in both the
Sanctuary and the Chapel. This system provides improved sound
quality through headphones. Receivers are available at the entrance to
each room.
• Large-print prayer books and programs are also available. Ask an
usher near the entrance to the Sanctuary.
• A section of our Sanctuary will be easily wheel-chair accessible during
all High Holiday services.
• Select High Holiday services will be videotaped and made available to
those unable to attend. Call us to arrange for this service.

High Holiday Child Care at Temple Services

Temple Mount Sinai will offer child care at the following times:
• On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur evenings at 8:00 pm in the Zork Library.
• On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, following the Family Services, around
10 am in the Zork Library. This program is for children 11 years and under.
• On Yom Kippur afternoon, child care for younger kids (a less-structured program than
our morning activity-based offering) will be available in the Zork Library.
Please call the Temple office at 532-5959 to RSVP for the child care programs.

Kever Avot, September 15

Memorial Service at the Temple Cemetery
Our Cemetery service ("Kever Avot") is a longstanding Temple tradition. We
gather at the cemetery during the Holidays to remember those who have gone
before us. One needn’t have relatives buried in the Temple cemetery to perform
this mitzvah. The brief service allows us to remember our loved ones wherever
they are.
This year, our service will be held on Wednesday, September 15 at 6 pm. The
Temple Mount Sinai Cemetery is at 3911 Gateway West near the intersection of
Interstate 10 and US 54.

Chag Sameach
Sukkot and Simchat Torah at Temple
Following close on the heels of Yom Kippur comes Sukkot, perhaps the most joyful
holiday on the Jewish calendar (indeed, the Torah commands “You shall rejoice on
your festival, being nothing but joyful”).
We will celebrate with an Erev Sukkot service in our Sukkah on Wednesday evening,
September 22, beginning at 6:15 pm. The Sukkot Morning service takes place on
Thursay morning at 10:30 am. On Friday evening, September 24, we will continue
our celebration of Sukkot, and as a part of that service, we’ll consecrate our newest
Religious School students. The service begins at 6:15 pm.
The holidays continue on Wednesday evening, September 29, at 6:15 pm with
Simchat Torah — the joyful dancing with the Torah scrolls as we complete the
annual cycle of reading. On Thursday, September 30, the Festival Morning service
for Shemini Atzeret will begin at 10:30 am and will include Yizkor, the recitation of
names of those who’ve died within the past year.

Chosen, But Not Special

Lunch and Learn, September 14
A new year of “Lunch and Learn,” Rabbi Bach’s popular monthly
series, kicks off on Tuesday, September 14. Lunch is served from
11:45 am, and we begin learning together shortly after noon,
wrapping up by 1 pm. Lunch is $10, and reservations may be
made through the Temple office or online.
For the first session of this year, Rabbi Bach will teach on a topic
that is often requested by Temple members: Judaism’s conception
of “chosenness.” Our point of departure will be a provocative
opinion piece by novelist Michael Chabon which appeared in the
New York Times this summer, along with some of the responses
it engendered. Where does the notion of “chosenness” come from,
and can we embrace it fully without falling into the trap of feeling
superior? Let’s talk about it together!

Dessert and Discuss Kick-off

September 12, 6:30 pm
Teens from Temple and elsewhere in the Jewish community are
welcome to attend our first “Dessert and Discuss” on Sunday,
September 12 at 6:30 pm. Rabbi Bach will lead the conversation
and learning. We’ll meet regularly throughout the year (a sched-
ule is in the mail to teens, and will be distributed on the first day
as well.)
Tuition for our High School programming, which includes Des-
sert and Discuss as well as MSTY, is $180 per year.

The Mourner’s Kaddish speaks not a word about death, grief, mourning or loss. At the time of
our greatest grief and sadness, our tradition asks mourners to stand and recite the Kaddish in
the presence of our community so that we affirm life. Through the words of the Kaddish, we
affirm that life is good, that the life of the deceased was good, and that we pledge to go on liv-
ing carrying their legacy with us into life.
