 Embankment - means any earthwork executed above the ground level, by
transporting material, but not limited thereto:
1. Any embankment for roads and yards
2. Any embankment for tank pads, without perimeter r.c. and/or
masonry ring wall
3. Any embankment for retaining earth dikes, dam, etc.
4. Any general embankment for improving and leveling of large areas.
 Backfilling - means filling up any single or general excavation for
foundations, trenches, pits, etc. also in the presence of any
construction works and/or piping systems, cable routing, etc.
 Subgrade - the ground supporting the road foundation, as well as the
embankment.

contractors and responsible for the on-going quality and
production at the work face.
 QC Inspector – Witness all tests performed in his designated area and carry
out detailed inspection prior to raising an AFI from
Integrated Management Team (IMT). All such tests should
be signed and certified by the individual performing the
test. Perform daily surveillance inspection of workmanship
and documentation activities.
 Site Engineer – Provide technical information and oversees the day-to-day
activities of field supervision.
 Site Manager – Manages and directs project construction activities
performed by the project team composed of personnel
assigned by the various functional departments.

6.0 SAFETY
6.1 Protection and safety shall be in accordance with approved TAL / OWNER
HSE Plan.
6.2 GAMA shall provide barricades, lights and any other preventive measures
according to the approved HSE Plan for personal safety during construction
to include fall prevention/protection when the depth of the excavation
exceeds two (2) m.
6.3 When the excavation has a depth of more than 1.2 m, a suitable shoring shall
be installed, sides shall be sloped back to a safe angle or benched,
excavated materials shall be kept as a minimum one (1) m from the edge of
the excavation and excess materials shall be moved to a spoil heap.
6.4 Access/egress shall be in accordance with approved TAL/GAMA safety
procedures.

EXCAVATION AND BACKFILLING

6.5 Worker shall use ear protection/ear plug in using compaction

machine/equipment.

6.6 Fire control/protection (fire extinguisher) will be on stand-by for any fire
occurrence.
6.7 Compaction machine/equipment with inspection pass/ color code shall be
use at the site. Any damage / oil leaking (environmental spill) shall be
reported immediately to GAMA HSE Department.
6.8 All necessary Safety pre start-up form (STARRT) must be filed and
discussed to all workers concern.

7.0 QUALIFICATION OF MATERIAL

7.1 Before starting construction GAMA shall select and qualify all needed
materials and related laboratory tests.
7.2 An approved laboratory (by TAL/IMT) shall conduct qualification test.
7.3 GAMA shall submit, for TAL approval, the laboratory test results provided
by the approved laboratory and will be countersigned for approval by all
concerned. These shall be duly numbered and filed by GAMA QC
Department and periodically shall issue a status of approved materials.

8.0 GENERAL
8.1 As a general rule all excavated material may be used for backfilling. If no
otherwise specified in document, the material for back-filling shall be free of
all-organic matter, dirt, loose, foreign materials and debris.
8.2 This work is applied to any kind and depth of excavation by means of any
kind of machine or by hand.
8.3 Ground adjacent to all excavation shall be graded to prevent water from
running in.

9.0 WORK EXECUTION

9.1 EXCAVATION
9.1.1 Excavation level and layout shall be done as shown on the IFC drawings.
Doc. No:GT-QAQC-002 TASNEE HDPE-LDPE PLANT PROJECT
METHOD STATEMENT FOR EARTHWORKS: Page 7/11
Rev.3
EXCAVATION AND BACKFILLING

9.1.2 Prior to start, reference benchmark position shall be verified and

limits/centerlines of excavation shall be marked.

9.1.3 Excavated material shall be transported to intermediate or to a designated

storage area so that the material does not fall out into the excavation.
9.1.4 Care shall be taken to avoid any disturbance to the bottom of excavation.
However, all bottom of excavation shall be compacted until the original
soil density has been reached.
9.1.5 Control shall be done in order to avoid any loose dust to remain in the
excavated trenches.
9.1.6 A practical dust control shall be implemented during operation.

9.1.7 When several close excavations are needed, the entire interested area may
be excavated together.
9.1.8 Adequate access for vehicles to the bottom, if needed, shall be foreseen.
9.1.9 Adequate drainage, such as temporary ditches shall be provided, if
necessary to avoid an accumulation of water inside the excavation.
9.1.10 Ground adjacent to all excavations shall be graded to prevent water
running in.
9.1.11 Permanent trench excavation shall not be used as temporary drainage
ditches.
9.2 BACKFILLING
9.2.1 Backfilling activities can be started only after approval from TAL/IMT.
9.2.2 Within 300 mm of pipe top, back-filling shall be hand tamped or board
shall be used to protect the pipe from damage caused by plate compactor
vibration.
9.2.3 For sewer and U/G piping the excavation bottom shall be free of rock and
coarse material.
9.2.4 Backfill to be in layers of 30 cm loose thickness.
9.2.5 Backfilling in presence of water inside the excavation is strictly prohibited.

EXCAVATION AND BACKFILLING

9.2.6 Backfilling of item to be backfilled shall be executed in a uniform way and

the relevant materials that have not reached a sufficient strengthening
grade is prohibited.

9.2.7 Using for transportation proper trucks, covering etc. in order to avoid any
mudding on the traveled roads and to remove promptly any fortuitous
mudding due to this activity.
9.2.8 In case of backfilling of pipes and thin walls, the works shall be executed
simultaneously on both sides.
9.3 COMPACTION
9.3.1 Compaction in each layer shall be done by a suitable compaction
equipment or by hand operated equipment for restricted area in order to
reach not less than 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by
Modified Proctor Test (ASTM D 1557) as specified in technical
documentation.

9.3.2 Supplying and spraying of water shall be done if necessary, to maintain

optimum moisture content for compaction activity.
9.3.3 Compaction test should be taken as follows:
a.) Individual footings, one test for every ten (10) excavations with an
area up to 12 sq m/ each footing.
b.) For mass excavation, one test for each 200 sq m.
c.) Client may request additional test to be taken in an area where one of
the compaction test fails.
d.) Specific Notes on civil engineering drawings will supersede the
General Specification.
e.) Job specific method statements shall be prepared for deep excavations
such as deep pits or underground piping, particularly in areas where
dewatering is required.
