UNC Research Project

The University of North Carolina, chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in

1789, was the first public university in the United States to open its doors and the only one to

graduate students in the 18th century. The first class graduated in Chapel Hill in 1795. There was

only one campus for the University of North Carolina which was located at Chapel Hill for 136

years. In 1931 the North Carolina General Assembly approved the expansion of more campuses

around the state. They added North Carolina state College of Agriculture and Engineering at

Raleigh (Now NCSU) and the North Carolina College for Women ast Greensboro (Now UNCG).

In 1971 the different public universities around the state joined the North Carolina University

program. There are now 17 different campuses around the state for the North Carolina University

program.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (or UNC) is a public school in Chapel

Hill. Unc has around 29,000 students enrolled. There is a student rec center, training center,

climbing walls, gyms, outdoor education center, pools, fields, and rec complexes. The in-state

tuition for UNC is around $26,000. The out-of state tuition for UNC is around $53,000.

For first year students the admision is as follows : 41,000 applied, 9,700 admitted (24%

of all students applying; 46% of NC applicants; 14% of out-of-state applicants). 4,400 enrolled

(45% of all students admitted; 61% of NC admits; 20% of out-of-state admits). The Average
SAT scores are 640-720 for the critical reading. SAT math 630-730, and ACT composite 28-33.

The average student (78%) was in the top 10% of high school class.

The majors that UNC are popular for are as follows, Communication and Media Studies,

General Biology, General Psychology, Economics, and Political Science and Government. They

provide Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, and Doctoral degrees. There is a honors program,

you can double major, there are multiple opportunities to study abroad, and there are multiple

opportunities to intern.

Financial aid is available. The requirements are, enroll in a degree program, complete a

financial aid application, and follow-up documentation, on time, be a U.S. citizen or eligible

non-citizen (permanent resident), make satisfactory academic progress while enrolled, be

registered for Selective Service (if applicable), and not be in default on a prior federal loan or

owe an amount on a prior federal grant.

Within 6 months of graduation students in the Biology majors , 48.8% of graduates were

working, and 41.9% were continuing their education. Within 6 months of graduation students in

the economics majors, 80.3% of graduates had jobs and 16.7% were going to graduate school.

Within 6 months of graduation students in the history majors, 45.5% were working and 40.9%

were attending graduate school. Within 6 months of graduation students in the psychology

majors, 41.8% were working and 46.9% were attending graduate school. There are resources to

help find jobs.

At UNC there is Franklin streak, Franklin street has tons of shops and stores for students.

There are popular places to eat and stores for students for school needs like books and there are

grocery stores. The Dean Dome is the basketball arena and it is a great environment, right next to
it is the basketball museum which is a great place to learn UNC history. There are many clubs

like sports clubs, career clubs, and ethnic clubs.

There are 32 different residential halls at UNC. Students who have earned less than thirty

hours of college credit after graduating high school and are enrolled in twelve or more hours at

UNC are required to live in campus student housing managed by the UNC Department of

Housing and Residential Education. You can sign up for dorms, room numbers, and pick a

prefered roomate in the sign up process for the dorms. There is no drugs or alcohol allowed in

dorms or on campus.You receive a parking pass through a lottery. There are multiple atms on

Hillsborough street behind Davis library for multiple different companies.

There are two dining plans. There is the unlimited plan witch is $2,236 and you get

unlimited meals, then there is a block plan witch the prices may vary with the amount of swipes

you want. There are two all-you-care-to-eat dining halls, and many more places to eat at with

your food plans. The dining halls and cafes are scheduled to have at least some if not all open

24/7
