Topic: This House believes that the Philippines is better off without a government. (Opposition)

Our nation is one divided by geography, a large number of ethnicities, and clashing
cultures. Amid these factors that hinder our national growth, the government- despite its flaws-
manages to act as the central unifying force in the country. The Philippines is a nation that due to
several factors found in our country, continually search for its national identity. In the absence of
a government, it is plausible for the country to be divided and fragmented. It is entirely possible
that one’s loyalty would be to ethnicity or region, rather than to the country. In this scenario, it
would not be too far-fetched to predict the secession of several groups- especially those who clash
with the government. Events such as anarchy and bloodshed may also be foreseen, as it is the
government’s duty to provide peace and order. The government is something that brings the
Filipino people together, as it is something that all Filipinos- regardless of geographical location,
ethnicity or religion, share.
Additionally, John Locke, an English philosopher said that every citizen has certain
inalienable rights- and that it is the duty of the government to protect these rights. Who is to say
that the rights of every citizen may still be protected in the absence of a government which secures
these rights? It was mentioned that in the absence of a government, such anarchy and bloodshed
may occur. Indeed, in the absence of a government, it may also be presumed that there would also
be an absence in those government agencies that are tasked to provide peace and order, and protect
the rights of every citizen. Without a government, courts of law- which decides on the rights of a
citizen, would not exist. There would be nothing to decide on one’s rights and enforce them. Some
may be forced to take matters into their own hands.
Besides the earlier points, a government provides order- or at the very least, some
semblance of it. This is necessary in order for society to be able to function smoothly. Without a
government, the government agencies ensure that society could function well, would not exist.
This would prove to be a terrible side effect of having no government as there would be no one to
make rules and regulations and ensure that every one abides by them.
It may be argued that the current system of government that the Philippines has is deeply
flawed- indeed, it could be clearly seen. However, this does not justify any motion to abolish the
government. Instead, we should become good and responsible citizens of the country and
implement the changes we want. After all, in a democracy, the real power lie in the hands of the
people- the majority who make up the voters. In the end, it is the people who decide what kind of
government they have- even if it may not be the one they deserve.
