- 1 GHz CPU
- 1 GB RAM
- 16 GB free HD
- DX9 video adapter with 128 MB video RAM
- monitor
- DVD drive
- keyboard
- mouse
- internet connection
- audio.
Windows 8 [if you're willing to put up with the useless, ugly Metro GUI ;-(]
is best suited for portables (laptops, netbooks) + mobile devices (touch pads,
tablets, smart phones).
If you own a modern, powerful PC, do yourself a huge favor: get a better OS...
[I build mine by hand using only top-of-the-line components, overclock, tweak
+ test them: ;-/]

Windows 7 represents a major improvement over the "fiasco" that was Windows
Vista, and I consider worthy of my taking the time to put up with Windows 7
annoyances, versus its added features and good performance.

I have never used (and shall never use) Windows Vista. This is why:

Windows 95 was the first Microsoft true graphical Operating System.
Please bear in mind that Windows 3.x is just a graphical environment (not OS!)
running on top of MS-DOS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_3.1x

A basic/low-end/portable/"cheapo" computer/PC clone/terminal/client/device

won't cut it for running today's demanding high definition 4K
(4096x2160)/Blu-Ray/HD-TV/theatre, true digital 7.1/9.2 surround or any other
3D multimedia, audio, video playback/encoding, graphics, rendering/animation,
CAD, publishing, games, benchmarks etc.
My home built PC [I custom-build mine by hand from scratch using
top-of-the-line components, overclock, tweak + test them to make sure it can
run anything I throw at it without a hitch ;-/]:
http://www.mdgx.com/pc.htm#SP
Shop around for the best computer components + lowest prices:
http://www.mdgx.com/bench.htm#PRIC
On the other hand, if you're using your computer strictly to surf the "tubes":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_of_tubes
handle e-mail, and/or write DOCuments/spreadsheets/presentations, a low-end,
"cheapo" PC clone, laptop, netbook, tablet, pad or similar device is probably
OK, and you really don't need to read this "disertation" any further. ;-(

For all you "speed freaks" out there... hold on to your hats! :-/

* This is my idea of THE ideal computer system optimally tuned to run Windows
9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/8.1/2012/etc, Linux/Unix/FreeBSD,
MacOS X or ANY other x86/x64 compatible [BeOS/Haiku or ReactOS anyone?! ;-/]
32-bit or 64-bit OS for that matter. ;-)
When it comes to the amount of RAM, HDD/SSD/RAM Drive capacity/speed, 2D/3D
video accelerator performance, CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burner drive speed, Internet
access performance, audio sound card high fidelity, and most importantly CPU
class and speed, NOTHING IS TOO MUCH for running today's demanding high
definition Blu-Ray/HD-TV/theatre, true digital surround or any other (3D)
multimedia, audio, video playback/encoding, graphics/photography,
rendering/animation, CAD, publishing, games, benchmarks etc:
- multicore SMP Intel Xeon SSE5 4 GHz with 64 MB 3 nanosec SRAM on-chip Level
2 pipeline sync burst cache for each CPU and 128 MB (or more) 4 ns Level 3
off-chip SRAM cache;
- super tower case with 12 external + 12 internal open bays, multiple eSATA,
USB, FireWire, S/PDIF, optical/digital inputs/outputs, SD/CF/MS cards
connectors;
- motherboard chipset 1666/2000/2333/2666/3000 MHz external bus, 1024-bit data
path, 64 MB dual UEFI BIOS;

48 GB/sec bandwidth) quad SLI video controller interface;

data path, with enhanced error correction (ECC), 0 wait state RAM chips;
- and if you want a true multitasking/multithreading, [almost 100% :)] safe,
true 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System, get your favorite Linux distro 64-bit
(x64); [Finally say NO to DOS, unless you're still playing those "fancy"
3D/SVGA DOS games, some of which can be actually played straight from a modern
web browser with hardware 3D video acceleration. :-/]
