Polydecene
PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG

1. Description

PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG is a mixture of iso-paraffins which are produced synthetically. This product
is pure, inert, colourless and odourless. It was authorized under the denomination “Hydroge-
nated poly-1-decene” as a food additive according to the Directive 2004/457/EC. This means a
real alternative to the medicinal and vegetable oils in the foodstuffs industry. Also the pharma-
ceutical and cosmetic industries can profit of the versatile characteristics of this oil. Compared
to vegetable oils which oxidize very quick becoming rancid and viscous,
PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG is thermal- and UV-stable.

2. Chemical Denomination

1-Decen, Homopolymer, hydrogenated or

Hydrogenated Poly-1-decen.

3. Production

Basic material is usually the synthetic gas ethane which is polymerized up to by passing the in-
termediate stage of the Alpha-Decene. Contrary to mineral oil this production procedure results
in a highly pure and in its composition exactly defined chemical compound of isoparaffins with
carbon-chain lengths of C20, C30, C40, C50 and C60. Afterwards the mixture is distillated and
hydrogenated twice. Due to its chemical connection with mineral oils the purity of this product
can be reviewed in accordance with the monography “Paraffinum liquidum” Ph.Eur. The test
results are excellent in particular the behaviour against sulphuric acid.

5. Approval from the Food Industry

The Food Additive Regulation regulates the require-

ments for additives, which are added to foodstuffs for
technological purposes. Hydrogenated polydecene
was included in the annex 2.

The purity criteria for E 907 “Hydrogenated Poly-1-decene” were published in the Directive
2004/45/EC.

The Food Additive Approval Regulation regulates the use of this product as coating agent
(Part B, Pt. kk E 907) for confections, dried fruits and nuts with a limit of 2 g/kg.

7. Toxicity and Ecotoxicity

7.1. Acute toxicity

Oral Administration: A 14/28 day oral administration did not give any signs of toxic effects.

7.2. Subchronic toxicity

Polydecene PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG proved to be non- toxic. (Mecon 96, 3 month Oral Toxicity Study,
No.: 20-04-0154/00-96). Polydecene food grade proved to be non-toxic on rats even when admin-
istered in very high concentrations in the food (90 day oral administration in dietary concentrations
of up to 5 %). Under the microscope no treatment related effects were found and no evidence
of hepatotoxicity or deposition in lymphoid tissue or liver. This is a remarkable contrast to findings of
white oils where 2 % added to food caused significant changes in the liver and lymphatic glands.
Deposition of mineral oil in a grain-like form is characteristic. There was also a proof for a damage
of the liver (Baldwin et al. 1992, Toxicologic Pathalogy 20; 426.435)

7.3. Eye irritation

Instillation of hydrogenated polyalphaolefin in rabbits eyes did not produce any corneal opacity,
nor congestion, swelling or discharge of iris or conjunctivae when observed at 1, 24, 48 or 72 hours
postinstillation regardless of whether the eyes were flushed with water after instillation of the test
agent.

7.4. Inhalation

As for all oils, inhalation of oil mist is toxic and harmul for the lungs.

7.5. Skin irritation (rabbits)

No erythema, edema or necrosis was observed in any of the rabbits upon examination immedi-
ately following a 4, 24, 48, and 72h dermal contact with the hydrogenated polyalphaolefin.

7.6. Skin sensitization

25 % of hydrogenated polyalphaolefin in white mineral oil did not produce any erythema or
edema after a test containing 10 days of sensitization dosing, two weeks of rest following chal-
lenge treatment. The hydrogenated polyalphaolefin is classified as non-sensitizer. A test with 75 %
of PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG in PEG 400 covering an observation time of 24 and 48 h respectively did
not produce any irritation. This concentration of PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG is classified as non sensitizer
(RCC, OECD Number 406 ‚‘Skin Sensitization‘‘ Project 669622).

7.7. Microbiology

Total counts of germs: <1/g

Growth in the concentration specimen: none

7.8. Ecotoxicity

PAO‘s and polydecene have been tested for fish (rainbow trout), algae (Selenastum Capricomu-
tum), and daphnia (Daphnia Magna).

Algae: EL 50 / 72 h = > 1000 mg / l

Daphnia: EL 50 / 48 h = > 1000 mg / l

8. Comparison of the ADI values with mineral oils

The SCF Commission (Scientific Committee for Food) in its function as advisory board of the
European Commission for Food Additives has effected extensive evaluations of the toxicologic
surveys published by the CONCAWE.

The SCF Commission (Scientific Committee for Food) in its function as advisory board of the
European Commission for Food Additives has effected extensive evaluations of the toxicologic
surveys published by the CONCAWE.

The intention of these evaluations is the determination of an ADI-value (Acceptable or tolerable

Daily Intake), which is specified in mg/kg / body weight. This value multiplied by the average
body weight (60 kg) results in the SML-value (Specific Migration Limit), a number which defines the
maximal allowed migration mass of a substance in foods.

Also the JECFA (Expert Committee on Food Additives), an organization of the Joint FAO (Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nation) and the WHO (World Health Organization) publish
ADI-values.

A comparison of the ADI-values published by the mentioned boards says that PIONIER 0030 SYN
FG, with an ADI-value of 0-6 mg/kg / body weight, is comparable with high-viscous medicinal
white oils based on mineral oil. Such oils show ADI-values of 0-10 mg/kg / body weight (JECFA) or
0-4 mg/kg / body weight (SCF). Extra liquid mineral oils show even lower ADI values in compari-
son with PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG.

Considering that high viscous medicinal white oils were recommended by the IKW for lip care
products due to the ADI-values, it argues for the substitution of this substance by the well-compat-
ible PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG.

H&R Group
Polydecenes

Polydecene
PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG

In the same way the SCF Commission recommended

high viscous medicinal white oils for the use as auxiliary
material for the production of plastic packaging for
foods (EG-Directive 90/128/EWG PM/Ref. 95883), due
to their ADI-values of 0-4 mg/kg / body weight.

For this reason PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG is qualified with its ADI-value of 0-6 mg/kg / body weight as
recommendable substitute for this application area.

Herewith the updated ADI-values for medicinal white oils:

JECFA of 4-13 June 2002

ADI 0-10 mg/kg (NOEL 1200 mg/kg/day) for medicinal white oils Class I with following specification:

9. Cosmetic Recommendations

PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG is moisturizing, not occlusive and harmless from the toxicological and allergological
point of view. Topical administered polydecenes are reabsorbed quickly, remaining in the horny layer.
They could not be proved in epidermis or corium. The skin does not become fatty, however pleasantly
smooth with a silky, fresh feeling. Therefore the oil is optimally suitable as super-fatting and glossing agent.
Also excellent is the compatibility with a wide spectrum of cosmetic components, such as emulsifiers,
pigments, antioxidants, thickeners, UV-filters and other active agents. The product is suited for sun care
products, creams, cleaning and care lotions, lipsticks, baby and massage oils, etc.

10. Anti-Wrinkle Test, proDerm Survey

Test conditions: 10 women with an average age of 43,2 tested PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG simultaneously with
PIONIER® 6301 CN 40 (a white medicinal oil of the same viscosity class) during 29 days. The depth of the
wrinkles was measured with a 3D-PRIMOS equipment.

The following results were detected:

PIONIER® 0030 SYN FG PIONIER® 6301 S CN 40

1st day, volume, mm³ 9,52 8,37
29th day, volume, mm³ 7,65 8,01
Wrinkle reduction, volume, mm³ 1,87 0,35
