Story Book

“If you give a kid an iPhone”

Based off of:
“If you give a mouse a cookie”

● Story starts off with a parent giving their kid an iPhone, he becomes addicted to it and eventually
it begins to affect his health.

Why:
If You Give a Kid an Iphone involves the STEM topic of Technology, it can show illustrations to make it
easier to understand the storypath, the story will not be long, teaches a lesson in self-sufficiency by
showing a kid who completely relies on his parents and that you should learn to be self-sufficient or
otherwise everyone will rely on someone else when they grow up. Technology is also incorporated into

the lesson by showing that young children cannot handle a phone yet by showing that if you give a kid a
phone he will break it or other problems will occur, and has an interesting plot that involves a loop that
occurs at the end of the story.

Target Audience:
Children in the age range of 5 - 6 living in a suburban area.

STEM Topic: Technology and Society: (the positive and negative aspects of technology and how it
affects society)
- The book will teach this topic by teaching that children should not and cannot handle a phone and that it
will only cause problems for the child and their parents.
Studies have found that phone radiation can cause problems for children and phones can also affect their
academics, encourage bad behavior and a lot of kids cannot handle the responsibility of having a phone.

Testing:
I showed my 11 year old sister the rough draft of our book. I asked if she like the book and what she
thinks we could do to make the book better. I asked her if she learned anything from the book and if she
was a 5- 6 year old again would she be able to understand the book and would she enjoy it.

Research:
For research we used a google form that asks about what books they like, how much they would spend on

We will use this data along with a study we found online that talks about how phones affect kids. Studies
have found that phone radiation can cause problems for children since they are still growing and they
have thinner, skin and bones so they absorb 2x the amount of radiation that adults absorb. This can cause
non-malignant tumors or even cancer. Phones can also affect their academics, encourage bad behavior
and a lot of kids cannot handle the responsibility of having a phone.

Vocabulary objective:
This book is going to focus on vocabulary for a 5 year old with a couple of words from a 6 year old
vocabulary list. This will progress the reader's vocabulary and help them learn. One of the focuses will be
the difference between to, too, and two. This book will also teach sequence words such as before, after,
then and once.

This story is based off the popular children's book “If you give a mouse a cookie” where a mouse asks for
a cookie and once he is given the cookie he keeps asking for things.
