Overview: Strands:
Consider common characteristics of communities & things that make them Culture & Community
unique. They will then apply this understanding to their own community. Identity

Learning Objectives: Materials/Resources:


Students will be able to…appreciate and understand how & why Our World big book: How the community changed &
communities change & create a e-book that documents their why it changed

Introduction:
Introduce the big questions for this new unit: How did our community start? How did it change?
Explain that we will be looking at the idea of past and present

Activities:
As a class the students will look for primary documents (photos) that show how different aspects of the communities
have changed (school, homes, food, toys, transportation, communication etc.)
They will then use the information they have learned & combine it with the information from how the communities
started.

They will choose 1 community & using they book creator app create a small book that illustrates how the community of
their choice was started and changed, comparing the past to the present.
The rubric will be reviewed with the class & questions answered before project begins

JUNE 20-21: Students will receive print and bound copies of books and shared their books with each other.

Wrap-up/Closure: put materials away Hand in BLM 31: How my community started
