Marybel Cova Keeps On Climbing
At age 85, Kirkwood resident isn’t ready to let
go of her life-long passion for rock climbing

We all should know by now why
rock climbers feel compelled to
scale to the summit of a mountain.
“Because it’s there,” they tell you.
Marybel Cova of Bethesda
Gardens in Kirkwood will tell you
she climbs because it’s there, and
also because at a spry age of 85, she
feels she still has some good years of
climbing left in her.
Cova started climbing about 30
years ago at an age when many peo-
ple might think it wise to retire the
boots, chocks and ropes necessary
to the sport. She said she joined her
husband in his hobby, an avid climb-
er himself, out of a spiritual need

“I was at a place where I had lost
some of my faith and trust in peo-
ple,” said Cova. “When you climb,
you have to learn to trust people to
make it work. The belayers hold the
rope to break your fall if you slip.
Your life is in their hands, so climb-
ing builds trust in people.
“That is part of why I have loved
to climb and am not ready to give it
up,” said Cova. “It’s a spiritual thing
and it filled a spiritual need that I
had when I started,” she added.
For someone looking for spiritual
uplift, you would think they would
have chosen to climb at the Garden
of the Gods in Illinois or in Colorado.
Instead, Cova’s first major climbing
destination was Devil’s Lake,
Wisconsin.
A climb at the Devil’s Lake cliffs,
about 30 miles north of Madison, is
preceded by a difficult walk through

“Devil’s Lake was a good place to
start, because there are beginners’
routes and more challenging
climbs,” said Cova. “My late hus-
band, Dario, was patient with me
and showed me the ropes.”
Devil’s Lake climbing routes have
names that are intimidating. They
come with titles like “Roger’s Roof,”
“Mouse’s Misery,” “Dancing Madly
Backwards” and “Cheatah.”
In three decades after those ini-
tial encounters in the Badger State,
Cova and her late husband climbed
together in an additional 25 states.
“If there were rocks there, we
were ready to climb together,” said
Cova. “My favorite place is Joshua
Tree Park in southern California,”
said Cova. “I especially like the
granite rock there and the high
country climate.

Ten Toes Express Gears Up For Spring Oasis Offers

See the sights of the
city by walking &
taking public transit
Baby, it’s cold outside! That said,
time flies, and it won’t be long before
hundreds of local older adults are
putting away the winter boots, lacing
up their walking shoes and heading out
on Citizens for Modern Transit’s
(CMT) Ten Toes Express Walking
Group excursions.
This popular program, spearheaded
by CMT and supported by AARP in St.
Louis, is designed to help individuals
experience just how easy it is to
integrate walking with public transit
use to get around town and explore the
city. It also promotes the health and
well-being benefits of an alternative
commute.
Ten Toes participants gain access to
a variety of helpful resources including
walk maps detailing directives on how
to utilize transit to get to many of the
region’s cultural and entertainment hot
spots. They also have the ability to take
part in weekly guided Ten Toes Express
Walking Tours, which allow walkers to
be part of a group as they become
familiar with the transit system and
how to utilize it to get to destinations.
These walks, led by trained,
volunteer walk leaders, range in length
from 0.3 to 5 miles depending on the
group and destination and originate
from the Brentwood, Forest Park,
Belleville, Rock Road, North Hanley
and Shrewsbury MetroLink stations.
The cost to participate is $10. To learn

Walk Leaders Wanted
More than 8,000 area residents have
collectively trekked thousands of miles
exploring the St. Louis region through
more than 1,200 guided tours.
Currently, there are more than 350
older adults each session, who
collectively make up a total of seven
different Ten Toes Express Walking
Groups. And, new participants sign up
each session.
To help meet demand, CMT is
looking for additional volunteer walk
leaders for the Spring 2018 Session,
which will kick off on Thursday, April 5,
and run for 12 consecutive weeks.
Each Ten Toes Express Walking
Group is led by one or two walk leaders.
Individuals, a couple or even a pair of
friends can sign up to be leaders. They
are then provided with the needed
training and tools to be able to guide a
group of approximately 10-15 fellow
walkers as they explore various St.
Louis attractions using public transit
and their own ten toes.
Walk leaders are able to pick the day
of the week for excursions and have
their group originate from a transit
location convenient to them. The time
commitment required to be a walk
leader vs. a regular walk group
participant is minimal.
A Walk Leader Training Session will
be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31. To

As the new Missouri legislative
session begins in Jefferson City, the
Missouri Association of Area Agencies
on Aging (MA4) has released a set of
legislative priorities for the coming
year designed to protect and assist
Missouri’s senior population. MA4
represents the 10 Area Agencies on
Aging in Missouri.
MA4 and its members have
endorsed the following five legislative
priorities for 2018:
• Support legislation creating the
Senior Growth and Development
Fund to support full funding for senior
programs administered by the Area
Agencies on Aging;
• Support restoration of full
funding for the MORx prescription
drug program for seniors;
• Defend the “Circuit Breaker”
program that provides tax credits for

Stray Dog Theatre is shining the light
on senior citizens this spring with its
inaugural Silver Stage Senior Theatre
production.
The program, directed by Robert
M. Kapeller, will put on an annual
production featuring actors over the
age of 60. The inaugural production
this spring will be a one-hour version of
William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,”
which will run May 5-6.
Stray Dog’s goal in starting the
Silver Stage program is to provide the
experience of theater to senior citizens
regardless of age, ability, experience
or background. It also seeks to create
a network of senior performers who
can become an active part of St. Louis’
theater community.
“We do a lot of community outreach,
especially with young kids, but we
realized there was one demographic
that there wasn’t as much attention
being given to, so we wanted to do
something with seniors as well,” said
Gary F. Bell, artistic director of Stray
Dog Theatre.

“We have done a few senior programs
in the past, but the senior citizen
community is often so underserved
in the theater community – there are
rarely roles for older people outside of

The auditions, held in November,
came with the tag line: “No experience
necessary,” and were open to anyone
over 60 years old. Stray Dog encouraged
both seasoned actors and first timers to
try out.
“Auditions went great,” Bell said. “We
invited folks in the senior community –
experience or no experience. The only
requirements were that you had to be
over 60 years old and want to have fun.”
The cast includes 19 seniors ranging
in age from 60 to 80 years old.
“The auditions were incredible,”
Kapeller said. “We saw such brave,
interesting people. Each told their
personal stories with such bravery and
a ‘here goes nothing’ attitude that really
got me excited. I plan to incorporate a
lot of the talents the seniors presented
in their auditions into the production.”
Rehearsals begin in February,
and actors will take the stage in “The
Tempest” on Saturday, May 5, at 2 and
8 p.m., and Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m., at
Tower Grove Abbey, 2336 Tennessee
