TERM DEFINITION
Retention time The time required for each compound to pass the
column is called the retention time.
Resolution Degree of separation between adjacent peaks on a
chromatogram.
Gas Gas chromatography is a separation technique used I
chromatography lab.
Carrier gas Carrier gas is used to transport the sample molecules
from the injection port to the detector and provide the
means for partitioning the sample molecules from the
stationary phase. Most common carrier gas is helium
gas.
Detector Each chromatograph has a detection device at exit of
each column to monitor the gas composition. There are
many types of detectors: thermal conductivity, flame-
ionization, electron-capture, photoionization, Hall
electrolytic-conductivity, flame-photometric, thermionic-
specific, and coulometric detectors.
TCD In thermal conductivity detectors, a tungsten filament is
heated by a continuous current flow and cooled by the
carrier gas as it exits from the column. Helium gas is
being used as carrier gas for lab GC.
Molecule The smallest particle of a compound that retains the
properties of that substance.
Accuracy The degree to which a given answer agrees with the
true value.

TCD Thermal conductivity detector
1. PURPOSE:
Gas chromatograph generate mole% of the components of hydrocarbon gas. This
analysis facilitates in controlling of Plant parameters and monitoring of mole% of
constituents of gas and LPG being transferred / dispatched to customers.
Therefore, accuracy of analysis is a matter of prime concern. In view to achieve
the accuracy, calibration of GC is required to carry out at defined intervals or on
as required basis.
2. SCOPE:
SOP is applicable for calibration of 200 series Gas Chromatograph placed in lab
at HGPP.
4. PROCEDURE:
Run standard gas sample on gas chromatograph for obtaining analysis data.
Note down each hydrocarbon components peak-timings from chromatogram
obtained as result of sample analysis.

Press→ Y Key by using SHIFT DOWN Key→ ENTER Key on chromatopac /
printer keyboard.
Press →1 Key →ENTER Key after Mode appeared on chromatopac / printer.
Press →5 Key→ ENTER key after window appeared on chromatopac / printer.
A. Press → END Key → ENTER Key → Calib Key → 1Key → ENTER Key.
B. Press → METHOD Key → 42 → ENTER Key → REPEAT Key → ENTER Key.
C. Chromatopac will confirm the feed data by printing the results which shows
each components time concentration and factor calculated thereof.
D. G. C is ready for sample injection.
