About this Program
Overview
The 4-year Actor Training Program provides extensive training in acting, movement, voice, and additional
aspects of the craft and integrates them into learning and interpreting a wide range of dramatic
repertoire.
The Drama Division typically accepts 18 students per year comprised of 8-10 undergraduates and 8-10
graduates who will work through the four-year acting curriculum together as a group.

Eligibility
In order to be admitted as a Master of Fine Arts student, you must have:
A bachelor's degree or its equivalent by the time you enroll

English language fluency
If you apply to this degree program and are denied admission, you can apply again. After two
unsuccessful attempts, you are no longer eligible to apply.
Academic Requirements
The Juilliard School requires no specific courses, GPAs, standardized test scores, or class rankings for
entry to this program.

However, we will carefully evaluate your academic record and required essay to make sure you have
the scholastic competence necessary to succeed in graduate-level course work.

Criteria for Acceptance
In auditioning and interviewing potential students, the Drama faculty looks for the following qualities:
A serious commitment to an acting career in the professional theater

A potential for vital, individualistic, trainable growth—regarded as more important than the
applicant’s present state of technical accomplishment
Energy, openness of mind, enthusiasm, and a readiness to take risks
A body, voice, and imaginative/emotional powers promising significant dramatic development
A generosity of spirit essential to ensemble playing
A sense of humor, a sense of language, a sense of rhythm, and a capacity for sustained
concentration
A readiness for hard, rigorous work

Audition Results
You will receive notification of your admission status (admit, wait list, or deny) through your application
status page (https://apply.juilliard.edu/status) no later than April 1. Should you be admitted and enroll, your final
official transcripts, indicating your graduation date, must be received by July 1.
Application Fee & Waivers
Application Fee
The $110 application fee is nonrefundable and must be paid through your application status page upon
submission of your application. Your application is not considered complete until the fee has been
received.
Fee Waivers
The inability to pay a college application fee should never be a barrier to applying to The Juilliard School.
Fee waiver requests are available for students who demonstrate significant financial need by the
submission of one of the following:
If you are independent, copies of prior year tax forms

A letter on school stationery from your current college's Financial Aid Office stating that you have
financial need of a fee waiver
A personal letter describing your financial situation
How to Upload
Fee waiver documentation must be uploaded directly within the online application and submitted by the
appropriate deadline (#anchor-chapter-application-timeline) . Documents must be in either .doc or .pdf
format. (Convert your file to another format if scanning your document as a jpg.)
Fee waiver requests are processed on an ongoing basis. There will be an application fee payment due
on your application status page until either your request is approved or denied. You will receive an email
with the results of your request as soon as it is processed.
If your request for a fee waiver is denied, you will be required to pay the application fee by the deadline.
Your application is not considered complete until the fee has been received.

Juilliard’s Admissions Committee uses your essay(s) to learn more about you as an individual and gain a
sense of who you are beyond your application, transcript, and audition.
Essay Requirements
1–2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font

Topic
Please write about why you have chosen to become an actor and your personal artistic goals. We
encourage you to write frankly and openly about your life, your connection to your art, and how you see
your art connecting to the world. Share your passion about people or politics or other art forms or about
anything that speaks to you.
Additional Essay Requirements

Additional essays are required in each of the following circumstances:

Should you have a special personal or academic history that you feel can explain an unusual
circumstance - gap year, unusually low or poor grade in a semester or year, etc. - you have the option to
submit an additional short essay.
Your Transcripts
Transcripts are an important component of the decision process. They help us determine if you have
sufficient scholastic competence to succeed in course work at the level for which you are applying.
Official transcripts must be received by the appropriate deadline (#anchor-chapter-application-timeline) .
Definition of an Official Transcript
An electronic record of your academic progress, including grades earned, sent directly to
admissions@juilliard.edu (mailto: admissions@juilliard.edu) by a secure service (such as Naviance, eSCRIP-
SAFE, or other system). Scanned, emailed, or uploaded copies are not considered official.
OR

A paper record of your academic progress, including grades earned, sent in a sealed envelope
directly to the Juilliard Office of Admissions from the issuing institution(s)
Transcript Requirements for Students Studying in the US

Report cards, grade reports, and other student records are not considered official transcripts

Your official transcript(s) must show all prior and current coursework equivalent or similar to a US
bachelor's degree (generally including at least 24 credits in liberal arts subjects)
If your transcript is not in English, we require the transcript in its original language as well as a
certified translation
You will be notified if an official evaluation of your transcript is required in order to verify your
academic level. Companies such as SpanTran (https://www.spantran.com/) , WES (http://www.wes.org/) ,
or ECE (https://www.ece.org/) can provide this service for a fee
Your Recommendations
In your application you will be required to identify a teacher, director, or coach who can discuss your
work as an actor and provide a letter of recommendation.
The recommendation itself is not due until later in the application timeline (#anchor-chapter-application-
timeline) . Your recommender will receive an email with a link to securely upload their letters to our
application system. We will only accept recommendations received through our application system.

Your Pre-Screening
Pre-Screening Requirements
Prescreening Required
Prescreening is required as part of the online application (#anchor-section-application-materials-your-online-
application) if you meet either of the following conditions:
you reside outside of the United States and Canada

your native language (defined as the language first spoken as a child and the primary language
spoken at home) is NOT English
This requirement does not depend on citizenship status or permanent address and cannot be waived.
Prescreening Optional
You have the option to submit prescreening as part of the online application (#anchor-section-application-
materials-your-online-application) if both of the following conditions are true:
you reside in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, or Canada

your native language is English

Pre-Screening Content
Please record each of the following sections separately; professionally recorded video is not
required. After the introduction, please film one of your monologues so that your entire body is visible.
For the remaining monologue(s), you may choose whether to film full-body, close-up, or a combination
of the two.
Section 1: Introduction
A brief introduction, filmed from the shoulders up. In the introduction, please clearly state:
Your first and last name as it appears on your application, as well as any other names you may use
Your current city and country of residence
What degree level you are applying for (BFA or MFA)
What pieces you will be performing (character, title of play, and playwright)
Section 2: Contemporary Monologue
Contemporary monologues may be taken from works spanning the time of Anton Chekhov to
present day
No more than two minutes in length
Section 3: Classical Monologue
Must be in verse or blank verse, not prose

Possible classical selections include: Greek plays in verse translation, Lope de Vega, William
Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, John Webster, John Ford, Racine in verse translation, William
Congreve, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Additional Monologue: Native Language
Required only if your first language is not English

Must be performed in your native language
If you have the capability to include subtitles in English in the video of your native language
monologue, please do. However, if you do not have access to this type of video editing software,
you will not be penalized (i.e., please do not purchase special software solely for this purpose)
You will also have the option to upload a document containing an English translation of your Native
Language monologue.
Filming Recommendations
It is to your benefit to create the best possible conditions for filming

Carefully consider the space in which you are filming; ideally, the space has minimal distractions for
the reviewer
Ensure there is adequate lighting
Be sure you are visible within the frame for the duration of the recording
Review your video before submitting to check for playback quality
Pre-Screening Type
Format
You are required to upload your files in a Video format. Acceptable file types include:
.avi, .flv, .m1v, .m2v, .m4v, .mkv, .mov, .mpeg, .mpg, .mp4, .webm, .wmv
Additional Requirements
English Language Proficiency

Definition
You are required to show proof of English language proficiency if your native language is not English -
regardless of citizenship. The Juilliard School defines native language as the language first spoken as a
child and the primary language spoken at home.
Exemptions
You are exempt from this requirement if both of the following are true:
you have attended an English language high school/secondary school for four years
you have or will complete a four-year undergraduate degree at an English language institution
Proving English Language Proficiency
The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions
decisions. You may submit one of the following test types to prove your mastery of the English
language. If your score falls below the minimum scores listed below, you should carefully consider
whether or not to continue the application and audition process. We reserve the right to deny an
audition based on scores that fall considerably below our minimum.

Minimum Score 89 6.5 60
The official test results must be sent directly from the testing company and received in the Office of
Admissions by the appropriate deadline (#anchor-chapter-application-timeline) .
Interview Requirement
You may be required to participate in an interview on your audition day in order to demonstrate your
fluency with the English language
You will be notified by the Admissions Office if an interview is required
InitialView
Juilliard is beta testing the use of InitialView (https://www.initialview.com/home) for measuring language
fluency. If you have already conducted an interview with InitialView, you are welcome to send it to us
(https://www.initialview.com/home) . However, this does not replace any of the requirements above.
Transfer Applicants
Definition
You are considered a transfer applicant if:
You have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent

You have attended at least one semester of full-time college study
Transcript Requirement
You are required to submit a transcript showing prior and current coursework from all post-
secondary institutions attended
You are required to submit your high school transcript if you have completed fewer than two full-
time semesters of post-secondary study
Essay Requirement
You must submit an essay explaining your decision to transfer from your current institution, in addition
to the other required essays.
Program Length and Transfer Credits
You are required to study at Juilliard for all four years of the program
Formerly Enrolled Juilliard Students
Definition
You are considered a former Juilliard college student if you have not been in attendance during the
previous academic year. You must submit all required application materials, in addition to the
requirements below.
Essay
You are required to submit an additional essay explaining your motivation for resuming your studies or
applying to another major at Juilliard. You may choose to address academic, artistic, or professional
goals that you believe could be accomplished by returning.
Transcript Requirements
You are required to provide official transcripts from all institutions attended after Juilliard
Transcripts are already on file from your time at Juilliard and do not need to be submitted
Proof of English Language Proficiency

You do not need to submit proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE).
Decisions
We reserve the right to review your Juilliard enrollment record to assist with admissions decisions.

Auditioning for Juilliard
Live Audition Materials
1. Four memorized monologues (two classical and two contemporary), each approximately two
minutes in length. One of the classical selections must be from a play by Shakespeare. In the initial
audition, we will ask you to present two monologues – one classical and one contemporary – of
contrasting natures. The remaining two monologues are in reserve, in the event we need to see
additional material. Please do not select monologues from monologue books and be prepared to
answer questions about the entire play from which your selection is chosen.
Classical material must be in verse or blank verse — NOT PROSE. Possible classical selections
include: Greek plays in verse translation, Lope de Vega, William Shakespeare, Christopher
Marlowe, John Webster, John Ford, Racine in verse translation, William Congreve, and Richard
Brinsley Sheridan.
Contemporary selections may be from Anton Chekhov to present day.
2. You should prepare 16 bars of any song (to be sung a cappella). If you are asked to sing, it is an
opportunity for our faculty to find out information about your vocal range and instrument. Not all
applicants will be asked to sing during the audition process and a trained singing voice is not
required for admission.
3. You are required to bring one copy of your resume to the audition. You are also welcome to bring
one photograph or headshot to the audition. Photographs are optional. Please refer here for more
information on resumes and photographs. Please do not mail or email resumes or photos before
your audition.
4. If you are invited to a live audition after passing prescreening, you are permitted to use the same
monologues in the live audition that you prepared for prescreening.

Live Auditions
Orientation and Warm-up
As part of the audition, you are scheduled to take part in a group warm-up and orientation session
These sessions provide you with an opportunity to ask questions about the audition process as well
as prepare vocally, physically, and mentally for your audition
If you audition in New York, there is limited individual warm-up space available
Audition
Your specific audition time will be assigned following the group warm-up
You will audition alone before a faculty panel comprised of instructors from the acting, voice/speech,
and movement disciplines
You will be asked to present two monologues – one classical and one contemporary – of contrasting
natures
Please be mindful of the length of your monologues; we kindly request that each monologue be
limited to two minutes in length
Please wear comfortable clothing that permits freedom of movement
First Round Callbacks
All first round callbacks take place on the same day as your scheduled audition
If you are selected to participate in the callback process, you should plan on being available for the
remainder of the day and evening
During the callbacks, you may be asked to do any or all of the following: participate in group
exercises, repeat your audition monologues, present additional monologues, do improvisations and
cold readings, and sing a cappella
Some individuals will be asked to stay after the callbacks for an interview with faculty
If you do not receive a first round callback, you are no longer under consideration for admission
At auditions in New York, a callback list is posted at the conclusion of the audition session, usually
between 1-2 p.m. The callback session usually begins around 3 p.m. and lasts well into the evening.
Please be prepared to stay all evening, in the event you are called back.
In Chicago and San Francisco, callback lists are posted at the conclusion of each audition hour both in
the morning and afternoon sessions. If you are called back, you will be asked to return at 6 p.m. for the
callback session, which lasts into the evening. Please note that on February 1st and 6th, there will only
be morning audition sessions and callbacks will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
Final Round Callback Weekend
Approximately 50 individuals will be selected from the first round callbacks to come to New York for
three days for a final callback round
If invited to the callback weekend, you will work intensively with faculty and have the opportunity to
speak to current students and discover more about Juilliard
Limited travel stipends for the final callback weekend will be available to applicants who
demonstrate a high level of financial need
The incoming class of 18 students will be selected from this final callback session
Decisions & Enrolling
Decisions
There are three possible outcomes to the audition process:
Admit
1. The faculty recommends you to the Admissions Committee based on your talent and artistry as
demonstrated in the audition
2. The Admissions Committee evaluates your academic record and supplemental materials in order to
determine your capacity to succeed at Juilliard
3. The Admissions Committee makes the final determination of who to admit based on their own
evaluation, faculty recommendations, and the number of available openings in your major
4. The Office of Admissions releases your decision letter
Waitlist
1. The faculty recommends you to the Admissions Committee based on your talent and artistry as
demonstrated in the audition
2. The Admissions Committee evaluates your academic record and supplemental materials in order to
determine your capacity to succeed at Juilliard
3. You are placed on the waitlist because, although you are found admissable to the school, we have a
limited number of openings
4. Should a place become available, the Admissions Committee evaluates the waitlist, making offers
of admission as necessary
Deny
During the application process, there are three points at which you can be denied admission:
1. As a result of prescreening
2. At various points in the application and audition process
3. Following review by the Admissions Committee
A denial at any of these stages results in notification that you are no longer under consideration for
admission.
These decisions will be posted to your application status page (https://apply.juilliard.edu/status) , as noted on
the timeline.
Scholarship & Financial Aid
Juilliard admits without considering your ability to pay. All monies awarded require completion of the
