the best scenes recorded and puts them together in a sequence that the director
likes.

Work on things (animated or live) such as

- Tv Shows
- Commercials
- Music Videos
They are able to change the way a story is being told just by cutting the footage or
by rearranging it on a different way. They do this by using different computer
softwares, such as Avid and Final Cut Pro.

deadline, because if the don’t, they could slow down the process of
the movie/commercial/tv show being made. They also need to give
attention to detail so if in one scene an actor is looking at his watch,
he needs to make sure he is wearing it during the whole scene
- Organization
- They need to be able to organize their workload in order for them to
finish their tasks on time. They also need to make and follow a plan in
order to complete their tasks

Impact of Economic/Societal Trend on Career

The Internet
- Positive impact by allowing more people to be able to watch videos and
movies. That makes the movie editor job to be in high demand because if
more people start watching movies, that means directors will want to make
even more movies or videos in places like YouTube.
Globalization
- With globalization, the world is more interconnected. That means that people
on the other side of the world would be able to watch videos or movies
someone has made thousands of kilometers far away. This is similar to the
previous example, since more people are watching movies and videos, that
makes the job of a movie editor in high demand
Technology
- Technology can have a positive and a negative impact on film editing. Since
there are many free or really cheap video editing softwares are being
released in the internet, the job of a film editor can get really competitive.
You don’t need secondary education in order to get a job as a film editor
which makes it really competitive, since you can be self taught. Also, people
don’t see this job as a really hard career since they think they themselves
can do this job very easily. On the other hand, a positive impact is that the
job would be easier than it was before. Thanks to computers, film editors are
able to edit the videos quicker than before, when they had to manually cut
the film and paste it together.

Secondary and Postsecondary Requirements

*THERE ARE NO REQUIREMENTS

Although since the film industry is very competitive it would be good to have
secondary education and practical experience. It doesn’t matter what you get but a
college diploma or a bachelor’s degree with courses in filmmaking would be good.
Another alternative would be to have training at a film school or to complete a
bachelor’s degree in journalism that contains courses in editing.

A degree people interested in film editing would be interested in is Film Production.

The Toronto Film School offers a 18 months duration program where you will study
things as how to assemble, cut and manipulate footage, apart of learning how to
shoot, direct and capture audio. This shows how from studying one thing, you can
end up working in many different things but in the same work field.
Extracurricular and Other Opportunities (Experience)

- Cinema Club
- In the cinema club, you don’t necessarily need to film anything if you
are not interested in filming stuff. You are able to join just to edit the
footage people give you. Cinema club basically offers you the
opportunity to work like a real movie editor in the film industry. You
will need to talk with the director in order to see how the movie is
going to go and what their vision is. You can also use this in order to
increase your portfolio so when you apply for a job or for a school for
filming, they can look at how you edit videos.
- MAD Club
- A way to practice as a film editor would be to join MAD club. Apart
from trying to make a difference, they also work on making
promotional videos to put up on the morning announcements. The
person interested in film editing would be able to practice their skills
by making the videos with MAD club
- Volunteering (ex. 24h Race)
- Another way to improve their skill and to practice would be by joining
events that need promotional items to be made. For example, at the
24h race they were looking for photographers and videographers to
volunteer and take videos and photos of the race. Afterowors, the
people who did a video they had to edit it and make it look good.
Volunteering in events such as this one would help someone
interested in film editing, since they will be able to practice filming
and editing.

Lastly, complete the storyboard below to explain each slide that you will present. Remember, each slide is 15 seconds
long and it will automatically switch to the next slide. Remember, the point of this is to treat it like a career story. You
are explaining all of the above information in a story like format for your character.

Please screenshot the slide and past it in the correct row below. Please also refer to previous Pecha Kucha’s that have
been done via. the website linked above. Watch examples to see what works well, and what doesn't.

Slide 1 Script: Hello everyone! I know all of you have at least heard once about film editors
(beat) But do you know what they actually do? Here I have an example of someone you
all might know. This is James Kim, the best videomaker in school.

Slide 2 Script: He is the person almost always behind the videos you guys watch in the morning
announcements. He films and edits all the videos, and if any of you actually pay attention
in homeroom, you’ll agree with me that they are amazing.

Slide 3 Script: So I bet you all are dying to know… What does a film editor actually do? Well, I am
here to tell you. They are the ones in charge of choosing the best scenes recorded by
the cinematographers and of putting them together in a sequence the director likes. It
might seem simple, but it actually isn’t.

Slide 4 Script: In other words, what they do at work is, they discuss and understand the
director's thoughts on the movie and then they proceed to actually edit all the footage.
When finished, they show the director the finished product and they make any changes
if needed.

Slide 5 Script: Now I am going to go in deeper in what you need in order to be a film editor.
They need to be able to work as a team with the director and the production team,
because they will have to collaborate many times with them, since all of them are
working towards finishing the film.

Slide 6 Script: You will also be required to be reliable. I know I know sometimes handing in
something on the deadline can be hard, but this is really important as a film editor. If they
hand in something late, they will be stopping the whole process of post-production,
which can lead to a downfall of the video.

Slide 7 Script: This one is kind of obvious but people mainly forget you need this skill. You need
to be able to use editing softwares, such as Premiere Pro or Avid. These programs are
what allows you to edit way faster than before, when you had to manually cut the film
and paste it together.

Slide 8 Script: At last, one of the most important skills you will need as a film editor is the ability
of being flexible. Many times, the final video you have edited is not liked by the director.
You need to be able to be flexible and change it in order to fit the director’s view of the
final product.

Slide 9 Script: Now, people who want to be film editors need a specific type of personality. They
need to be really really really creative. So those people who spend their whole time
drawing at the back of the classroom instead of listening, this is a perfect job for you.

Slide 10 Script: We are all different but some people like me, are able to learn new things by
doing them, also known as Kinesthetic. This learning style would be perfect for a film
editor, since you are going to have to learn how to edit footage by looking at people edit
their videos either online or in real life.

Slide 11 Script: It looks like I have been avoiding this question but I promise I haven’t. What do I
study to be a film editor? If I am being honest, you don’t need to study anything in order
to become one. You just need to be really good at editing videos, which you can learn
by watching videos online.

Slide 12 Script: But.. I highly recommend you get a degree because the film industry is highly
competitive. You have a higher chance of making it if you study something related to
film editing, such as a Film Production degree, which is offered in many universities and
colleges around the world.

Slide 13 Script: For example, The Toronto Film School offers a 18 months duration program
where you will learn and study things like how to assemble, cut and manipulate footage,
apart from learning how to shoot, direct and capture audio. The good thing about this
degree is that you can find many different jobs where you can use what you learned by
getting this degree.

Slide 14 Script: I have good news for all of you who are not sleeping and who are paying
attention. The job of a film editor is in high demand. Why? Because people around the
world are starting to watch more movies thanks to the internet and to globalization. But
what does that mean?

Slide 15 Script: It means people are watching more movies since they are more accessible. That
makes the movie industry want to create more movies. If more movies are being made,
jobs such as actors, film editors and directors will be also needed, making a film editor’s
job on high demand.

Slide 16 Script: Also, technology has highly helped this career by making it easier. As I
mentioned before, the film needed to be cut and pasted manually. Technology has
improved this job by allowing people to edit footage with a computer, even someone in
their houses are able to do it. That is the only downfall on film editing.

Slide 17 Script: Since there is no education needed, people can learn how to edit films at home.
That leads to more people chasing a film editor’s job, which equals to more competition.
That could lead the film editors who are not good enough to be jobless.

Slide 18 Script: But if you all follow my advice, that won’t be a problem for you. Productions will
look at your application way before as someone else's because you will have a degree
to prove you are good at doing what you do. This is why I highly recommend you get a
degree on something such as one on Film Production.

Slide 19 Script: If you want to practice film editing, I recommend you join Cinema Club. They
work on making movies, and if you want you can only work as an editor. The same goes
for MAD. You can work editing the promotional videos for the morning announcements.
Remember it is never too late or too early to start practicing.

Slide 20 Script: It looks like my time's almost up but I want you all to know that you should do
whatever you want with your future. Follow your likes and interests and not someone
else's. Always be you, no matter if you wanna be a film editor or a writer. People like me
will always be here to support you. Thank you.
