How to Find a Course
Courses are listed alphabetically by subject area
e.g. digital skills, creative arts. They are also listed
alphabetically in the index.
How to Book
All courses in the programme, with the exception of
some Beeslack Courses, Highers and National 4/5’s, will
go live on Tuesday 22nd August 2017 at 9.30am. Places
will be allocated on a strictly first come, first served basis.
Please make sure that the course meets your needs
before booking. If you have any questions you can
contact us on 0131 271 4535 or 3713.
Please try to book at least a week before the course
starts as decisions are made at this point about whether
or not courses will run.

Once you have successfully booked a place you will be
issued with a receipt which you should bring along on
the first day of the course.
Some Beeslack Community High School Courses have
separate arrangements for enrolling as they do not
appear on Eventbrite. For further details of these courses,
please contact 01968 673893.
Classes such as Highers and National 4’s and 5’s start
earlier than the rest of the programme. Enrolment
for these classes will take place on Thursday 3rd
August 2017 from 10am to 12pm in Lasswade Centre,
Penicuik HS, Newbattle CL Centre and Aim High
Woodburn Shop (details above). Please contact
Beeslack direct for info on their courses.
Additional Costs
Most courses do not include materials, books, SQA
registration or exam fees. Please check before enrolling
in the course about any additional charges. Please do
not buy any materials until you are sure that the course
is running. Most tutors will provide this information at
the first session and give advice about what and where
to buy the materials you require.
Concessionary and Reduced Rates
Reduced and concessionary rates are available as follows:
Reduced rates: If you are under 18, a full time student,
in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or 60 plus and
retired or not in employment, you are entitled to a
reduced fee.
Concessionary rates: Those in receipt of Council Tax
reductions (not single person occupancy rebates),
Housing Benefit, Pension Credit, Incapacity Benefit,
Unemployed/Job Seekers Allowance, Working Tax
Credit, Universal Credit or Incapacity Benefit.

Where you indicate that you are entitled to a
concessionary or reduced rate you will be asked to
provide proof of this when you register or at the first
session of the course. If you do not produce proof of
eligibility you will be liable for the full cost of the course
if you wish to continue attending.
Cancellations
Courses with a low take-up rate may be cancelled
before the first week or on the first day/night.
Occasionally there will be a need to cancel a class at
short notice. We will try, wherever possible, to offer the
course at a later date.
Where sessions have to be cancelled due to
unforeseen circumstances e.g. weather, venue
closures, we will try wherever possible to offer the
session on an alternative date.
We reserve the right to change a tutor and/or venue at
any point during the programme or course.
 Refunds
You may withdraw from a course up to 7 days before the
start date and receive a full refund. If you withdraw less
than 7 days before the course starts you will be entitled
to a full refund less an admin fee of £10. If you withdraw
on or after the first session, no refund is payable.
We will offer full refunds where we cancel the course or
fail to deliver the course as advertised. You will have the
option to switch to an alternative course or venue if one
is available. Courses cancelled by us after the start date
will be refunded on a pro-rata basis.
Additional Support Needs
We try to ensure that everyone can attend our courses.
If you require an accessible venue, please check with
us before booking. If you need additional support to
help you attend please make us aware of this before
you book, if possible, or prior to the course starting to
ensure we can make the necessary arrangements. You

Crèche Support
Some of our free daytime classes offer free crèche
support. Please contact us for details of these courses
or check on https://LLEMidlothian.eventbrite.co.uk for
further information. All crèche spaces must be booked
in advance.

Employability
This programme supports people who are looking for work, developing their skills towards getting a job, moving into a new job or looking to progress
in their career. Sessions will include developing job search skills, CV building, interview skills and literacy and numeracy support.
There may be the option of gaining a qualification through these courses which would help to build your CV.

Digital skills for work and life will help people develop their computer skills in many areas of modern computing.
Develop your skills in using email, Digital Photography, Internet Safety, Social Media, downloading and using apps, banking and online shopping and much more.
You can bring your own device eg. laptop, phone, tablet to some of these courses. PC passport is an SQA qualification which covers the use of Word Processing,
Spreadsheets and Presentations. The European Computer Driving Licence allows you to gain a qualification in IT recognised by many employers.

Family learning provides a range of programmes that allow parents and their children to learn together in a variety of subjects. Specific programmes such as Learn
With Fred lets parents and carers of children aged 0-3 year olds work as a group to develop skills around messy play and reading. It helps parents feel more confident
in their abilities and creates a social circle of people who support each other through the programme. PEEP is a programme which develops early literacy skills and
allows parents to gain a qualification for their learning.

Delivering care and support well is very rewarding.
Carers say that they make a real difference, helping their
clients to continue to live fulfilled lives.
Social care services for those living at home can be
privately owned or run by the Council or voluntary
sector. The work can be varied, providing support and
personal care for people from all different backgrounds
and of all abilities. It includes helping people to get
washed and dressed, providing meals and administrating
medication. Carers will work closely with others such as
community nursing staff, workers from local authority
departments and the police.

Literacy and Numeracy Service
The Literacy and Numeracy Service offers adult learners and young people in
Midlothian free opportunities to work on and brush up their reading, writing,
speaking, listening and number skills. Learning takes place in small, friendly,
supportive groups where people set their own goals and work at their own
pace. Some one-to-one support may also be available. Learners can also gain
qualifications in subjects such as SQA Communications and SQA Numeracy.
Groups meet during the day, in the evenings and sometimes at weekends.
We also run specialist provision including Driving Test Theory Group, Lip Reading
Class for those with acquired hearing loss and Preparation for Further Education
Courses in partnership with Newbattle Abbey College.
All new learners must arrange an appointment so that they can be placed in the

adults. Groups are learner led with one-to-one support and include:

Airport is a free service which supports employers at

Opportunities to Develop Skills in
Equalities Work
Midlothian People’s Equality Group are an enthusiastic,
fun and committed group of volunteers from varied
backgrounds. We regularly work with Midlothian
Council, and other partners, to deliver local equalities
projects, events, learning opportunities and to give
our views and opinions on services. We are keen to
welcome new volunteers who have an interest in
equalities issues and who can give up some of their
time in a variety of opportunities. We can support with
skills development if required. In return you will gain an
opportunity to meet new people, gain confidence, learn
