Tracheostomy
By: Pavitra Madala
What if someone can’t breathe and they are “choking to death?” What if you can’t
do anything to save them? In this situation, you obviously take them to the hospital, but what
do the doctors do to save the victim? They perform tracheostomy.
Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which an incision is made into the trachea,
through the neck, and a tube inserted so as to make an artificial opening in order to assist
breathing. It is performed because of airway obstruction and/ or inefficient oxygen
delivery.
It is important to understand that tracheostomy, just like all surgeries, can have
complications during or after the procedure that can make the surgery hard on the
patient or “not-so-life-saving.” This is because individuals vary in their tissue circulations and
healing processes, as well as anesthetic reactions. Ultimately, there might be no guarantee
that the surgery will lead to the expected results or potential complications.

Why YouTube is not available on Amazon fire and Echo:

By: Sumant Anantha
As you know for those who use Amazon Fire or Echo, Youtube will not be available
on any of these Amazon devices starting on January 1st of 2018. Google and Amazon have
been battling for months. Google will continue to block Amazon because Amazon is not
selling any Google products online. They also had argument about one product is a copy
about one another, like the Amazon Echo and the Google Home/mini. Amazon tried to let
customers use youtube by going through web. Google though was smart and blocked the
web on Amazon. Amazon hopes to resolve this issue with Google and get youtube back.It
shows that Amazon is willing to use its online retail clout to push its agenda while Google will
use YouTube as leverage over semi-rival tech firms that won’t play nice with it.

Why is Apple slowing down older iPhone models

By: Sumant Anantha
Many people are wondering why there Iphone are slowing down and not receiving
any updates. Well as you can see Apple is trying to slow down your phone to help it. The
reason behind this is because they know the older models have a lower battery capacity.
Also giving any more updates may cause an accidental shutdown which will damage the
phone. So right now Apple is trying to work on a solution to make sure the older models

Net Neutrality Repealed: What Now?

By: Pranay Koneru
I’m pretty sure that by now many of you have heard about Net Neutrality getting repealed
by the FCC. After the announcement you may have automatically gone into full panic mode
just like everyone else, but have you ever stopped to ask yourself the simple question ,
“What is Net Neutrality?” and “What does it getting repealed mean for me?” Well in summary
the Net Neutrality rules went into effect on June 12, 2015. They state that Internet
Service Providers or ISPs can’t block or slow down certain content while speeding up
others and that all content will be accessible by consumers on an equal basis. For example,
let’s say that your internet provider is Verizon. Well without Net Neutrality Verizon can
speed up certain content, say their website, but they can also slow down other content
for websites like Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc. But with the rules in place Verizon would have
had to give all the websites equal treatment and allow access to all of them at the same
speed. But this isn’t the worst part. Without Net Neutrality we may actually be charged
more for access to certain websites. So we may actually have to pay twice, once for
access to the website and then again for any memberships associated with the website.
Without Net Neutrality in the near future the Internet may be less like the World-Wide Web
and more like cable TV where you only get access to what you pay for.

Charity of the Month

By: Amuktha Dasari
Restore Her Heart
January has been nationally recognized as Sex and Human Trafficking Awareness Month
since 2007. Human trafficking is a problem in the U.S. and around the world, affecting the
most vulnerable: children who are in foster care, homeless, struggling with mental health
issues, part of the LGBT community, or sexually abused. Women and girls account for 98%
of victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation (International Labour Organization Report).
This month’s charity of the month is Restore Her Heart, a charity devoted to protecting
victims of human trafficking. Besides donating, you can:
● Start a workplace giving campaign or include Restore Her Heart in your current
campaign.
● Pledge a gift or dedicated match to the cause.
● Increase employee engagement by offering our Human Trafficking resources to
raise awareness, learn more or volunteer.
● Involve your customers and community through cause marketing.

Teenage Hacker gets spared Jail : Be safe on computers
By: Harvik
It all starts from a desktop in a teenagers room. Jack Chappell, who suffers from
autism, has launched 2000 cyber attacks on many famous industries such as NetWest,
Netflix and BBC. He also targeted Amazon and National Crime Agency. This teen was
recruited from 2 Israeli hackers and hacked many websites before boasting on social
media. One tweet was, “Offline again? how come you can’t handle my 100GBPS of DNS
traffic”. Cops were able to track his internet addresses and linked the incidents to him.
Instead of going to jail, he spent 16 months in suspended youth custody.
You can be safe on computers in many ways:

- Installing Protective software which can block ads and prevent viruses
- Choosing strong passwords with a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols
- Backup your important data on the computer so nothing gets lost
- Use Desktop Firewalls to protect files
- Don’t visit untrustworthy sites
- Never click on fishy ads, most are scams
- Don’t reveal personal or sensitive information such as credit card number, name ,
address, Ip Address etc..

Is Net Neutrality Worth It?
By: Vibhu Subramani
About two weeks ago, Congress repealed an act that would change our lives forever. This
was the repeal of Net Neutrality and it affects everyone. Net Neutrality is the concept
that your internet provider cannot change the speed or block any websites you access
as a recipient of their services. Ajit Pai, the FCC chairman, decided that Net Neutrality
was wrong and took his beliefs to Congress. There are many rumors circulating involving
him but the most prominent one now is the belief that he repealed Net Neutrality for
Verizon. Before Ajit Pai became a member of Congress, he was a lawyer for Verizon. He
supported Verizon and Ajit Pai jokingly commented to the Verizon executive that he was a
puppet in the FCC chair. It is said that Verizon is paying Ajit Pai to repeal Net Neutrality.
Again, this is just a rumor and is not supported by many facts.
Now, since Net Neutrality has been revoked, our internet providers can slow or
impose a premium on certain websites. As a user of AT&T Fiber, I believe this is wrong
since it limits our right to privacy. This would also make starting a startup harder since
the internet is the main way to spread the word about your business. In conclusion, Net
Neutrality is the belief that your internet provider cannot change the speed or block
certain websites. Now that it was repealed, the consequences of that will ripple
throughout history.

Supercars
By: Abhiram Dasari
Today’s supercars are known as highly expensive, gas-guzzling, aerodynamic metal
monsters. However, there is a new version of these supercars that might be even better:
electric supercars. As we all know, Tesla, the emerging electric car giant, has been

manufacturing two new electric cars: the Model S, and the Model X. As for gas
supercars, we have the Bugatti Veyron SuperSport, the Ferrari LaFerrari, and the
Lamborghini Aventador. But what’s the difference between these two types of cars?
Let’s start with comparing all three of the Tesla electric cars:
Tesla Model X:
● 0-60mph: 2.9 seconds (Highest performance version of the P100D model)
● ¼ mile: 11.4 seconds, which is higher than the fastest SUV’s and some sports cars.
● Uses All Wheel Drive
● It has a range of up to 295 miles per charge
Tesla Model S:
● 0-60mph: 2.275 seconds (Highest performance version of the P100D model)
● ¼ mile: 10.723 seconds (Ludicrous+ Software)
● Uses All Wheel Drive and Rear Wheel Drive
● It has a range of up to 335 miles per charge
Tesla Model 3:
● 0-60mph: 5.1 seconds (Ludicrous Software hasn’t been released, estimated 2.5
seconds with Ludicrous)
● ¼ mile: Estimated to be about 11.0 seconds with Ludicrous Software
● Uses All Wheel Drive and Rear Wheel Drive
● It has a range of up to 310 miles per charge
The Tesla Model 3 is meant to be a watered-down version of a Model S, while the
Tesla Model X is an SUV crossover that still competes with some of the world’s best cars.
Let’s take a look at some of the gas supercars that were mentioned before:
Lamborghini Aventador
● 0-60mph: 2.9 seconds
● ¼ mile: 10.6 seconds
● Uses all wheel drive
● It has a range of 326.06 miles per tank of gas
Bugatti Veyron SuperSport:
● 0-60mph: 2.4 seconds
● ¼ mile: 9.6 seconds
● Uses all wheel drive
● It has a range of 448.8 miles per tank of gas
Ferrari LaFerrari:
● 0-60mph: 2.4 seconds
● ¼ mile: 9.7 seconds
● Uses Rear Wheel Drive
● It has a range of 363.2 miles per tank of gas

Even the gas supercars have their differences. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is
the best car when just comparing stats. It has superior speed and range when compared
to the other cars by far. However, the Ferrari LaFerrari is the only car that uses Rear
Wheel Drive.
Now, let’s compare the Veyron SuperSport versus the Tesla Model X. First of all,
affordability. Obviously, the Tesla Model X is much more affordable, as it is designed to be
an SUV. The Model X is also far more superior in terms of acceleration. However, the
Bugatti somehow manages to be better in both the ¼ mile and in range. Why? Well, the
Model X has an electric engine, which has much more torque than a gas engine, which

increases its acceleration by a lot, but electric motors cannot reach as high of a speed
as gas motors at their peak. So, if we were to pit these two in a race against each
other, the Model X would pull ahead at first, but then the Veyron SuperSport would catch
up and take over the Model X. It would pull ahead, and beat it by almost 3 seconds. So, as a
generalization, electric cars have much more superior acceleration, but gas cars can
accelerate for a much longer time and reach a far more superior top speed, making
them the preferred choice. However, many car specialists agree that the future could
definitely change that.

Interview
We sat down with TJ Cawley, our new mayor of Morrisville, to ask him a few questions
about his experiences so far as mayor. Our first impression of him was that he was a
friendly, approachable person. He seemed comfortable talking to a group of students; we
went around introducing ourselves, and when it was his turn, he introduced himself as just
TJ. After chatting for a few minutes, we started the interview:

Question: So far, how has your experience been working with others to run this city?
TJ: It’s been great! I've been on the council for 4 years already, so I’m familiar with what I
was going into. It's a lot of work, and speaking to council members; not just in meetings, but
also before meetings, and in between, to understand what everyone's goals are.
Question: Have you ever had to deal with negotiations with city employees? Did you learn
anything from these experiences?
TJ: Well, the way our government is formed is: there’s the seven elected officials, and
then the town manager. And so, the best way to do it is for us to interact with the town
manager, and then she runs the town, so she's kind of like the CEO. There’s not really
much interacting with city employees.
Question: Do you think it is more important for a mayor to be a respectable community
lead, or a competent and skillful administrator?
TJ: So I’ve been a stay home dad for about 10 years, so that's where I do most of my
administration, taking care of the house and things like that. I think now, as mayor, I need to
administrate my time, I need to sort of administrate my relationship with the other six
council members. As a council member I didn’t need to do that as much, so it’s a very
different leadership style. As a community leader, I think that’s very important, Right now,
I’m sort of the voice of the town, so when I speak, when I have the council's approval, I
can speak on certain issues, but otherwise I'm still speaking as myself, as a single elected
official. And I'll continue to do the volunteerism that brought me up to this position, so
hopefully I’m leading by example.
Question: Did you always know that you wanted to go into politics when you were
younger?
TJ: No, actually. My younger brothers are the politicians in the family, I'm a little bit more
shy. I was kind of like the nerdy jock in high school, and my middle brother -they're twins
with each other, two years younger than me- he was class president his freshman,
sophomore, junior and senior years, and my other brother was either vice president or
secretary/treasurer all those years, so that was never really my thing. I got started on a
sub-committee of the town, because the neighborhood I lived in needed some traffic

calming due to Parkwest Village being built. I ended up running for public office in 2011- I
didn’t win, but I kept on being involved- and in 2013 I won, and in 2017 I won again.
Question: Who is your role model? What characteristic do you like about them?
TJ: My mom was my role model. She was a teacher at first, and then when I was born,
she became a stay-at-home mother. And she still did lots of volunteering around our town
-she helped create the soccer league that I played in, in New York. She was just very
interested in helping other people, and curious about them, and just really instilled in me a
sense of volunteerism.
Question: Do you think personal competition can be an obstacle for the way the
community runs?
TJ: Yeah, if some people are trying to take all of the power for themselves, it’s bad for
the community. So if you work with other people, I like to think that it’s better to make
the whole pie bigger than to try to fight for scraps of the pie. There’s something known
as the Scarcity Mentality, which is kind of like the Zero-Sum Game, where in order for
you to gain something, I have to lose something. I don’t believe in that, I believe that everyone
can and should gain.
Question: We’ve heard that you’ve been a Council Member in Morrisville for quite a while.
How do you think being a mayor is different from being a council member?
TJ: I didn't really know until I started running for mayor. You know, it seemed like it was
just another person. The mayor essentially runs the meetings, and facilitates the meetings,
that's their main job, to be the spokesperson for the town. During the campaign I had the
chance to speak some other leaders from around the country, including Michael Blake
from New York, from the Democratic National Committee, and he explained to me that
when you’re going from council member to mayor, you’re essentially going from the
legislative branch to the executive.
Question: What are you going to do to help Morrisville’s economy?
TJ: I want to try to work a little bit more closely with the Morrisville Chamber of
Commerce. They’re our Economic Development arm, so I'm hoping to meet with most of
the high-value companies in the area, like the big taxpayers, and just let them know that I'm
available, and whatever ideas that they can promote to me that I can help them succeed
with, just let me know.
Question: What inspired you to become the mayor?
TJ: Just sort of leading by example, and encouraging people to volunteer and get involved
as much as they can.
Question: What do you value the most about being a leader in the community?
TJ: I have the opportunity to speak to more people, and to influence more people.
Question: What does cultural diversity mean to you?
TJ: I think it’s great! I know I definitely wouldn’t have been able to experience so many
different cultures if I weren’t exposed to them as mayor.
Question: What do you plan to do to benefit the younger generation of this community?
TJ: I'll do whatever I can to support the Morrisville Youth Leadership Council, I’ve met with
a few people looking for grants and scholarships, and that kind of thing. Yeah, whatever I
can do to help with education, and to help the youth. It’s important that they reach out to
me, and speak up about what they need.

Question: How do you think the younger generation can contribute to our community?
TJ: Be engaged. Try to come to some council meetings, or watch them online, they're
always live streamed, or you can just look at them on the computer. Encourage your
parents to become involved and help you, drive you to the next litter sweep, and just clean
up litter with them. I encourage you guys to do more things as families. Ask us for the
things that you need, just stay involved.

Thank you so much for your time Mr. Cawley! To contact Mr. Cawley and the rest of the
council, you can email them at TownCouncil@TownofMorrisville.org, or give them a call.
