Atomic Bomb Historical Debate Essay

Now that you have conducted your research, weighed all of the contributing factors,
taken a side, and debated in class, it is time for you to put everything that you have learned into
a formal essay. Since our debate in class, some of you may have changed how you feel about
the decision to drop the atomic bomb. Maybe you were on the Pro side until you considered
the moral aspects of the decision. Perhaps you were on the Con side until you considered the
military strategy. It is even possible that you may hold one position in the debate but disagree
with some of the key factors that support that position. That is okay! You don’t have to agree
with everything all of the time. Here is your chance to explain your position and your beliefs
further. For this assignment, you will write a 2-3 page paper discussing the historical event, the
debate, your position, and the opposing position. There are certain expectations I have for this
essay that I have listed below. Please use this as a checklist to ensure that you cover all the
bases and your essay is the best it can be! Also, be sure to reference back to your graphic
organizers and any notes that you have taken during class lectures, discussions, or during the
debate. That’s what all of those things are there for!

Outline
Introduction- Discuss the context of the event. This should be an explanation of what
happened, where, and the result. Discuss the historical debate, its origin, and the development
overtime. Include your thesis statement.
Thesis- This is your main argument. You will state you position clearly and list your points that
you will use as supporting evidence. This should be the last sentence of your introductory
paragraph.
Body paragraphs- You should include one paragraph for each key point that you have listed in
support of your position. Your key points should be supported by factual evidence from the
sources that were assigned as research for the debate. Additionally, in these paragraphs, you
should address the points that are used to counter your argument. You should argue against
the opposition and use sound evidence to support your claims. Be respectful when disproving
opposing claims.
Conclusion- A brief summary of what you have just said. Be sure to restate your thesis!

If you follow these guidelines, you should have no problem reaching the page requirement!
Please be aware that 2-3 pages means a minimum of 2 FULL pages. That does not mean one
paragraph onto the second page. You may go over 3 pages slightly, but the rule of thumb
should be no more than 10% over the limit. Happy writing!
