EEX-467 UTILIZATION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY & ELECTRIC TRACTION

1) A 220V, 500A, 600 rpm separately excited motor has armature and field resistance of 0.02
and 10 ohms. The load torque is given by the expression TL=2000-2N, Nm where N is the
speed in rpm. Speeds below the rated are obtained by armature voltage control and speed
above rated are obtained by field control
a. Calculate motor terminal voltage and armature current when the speed is 450rpm.
b. Calculate field winding voltage and armature current when the speed is 750 rpm
2) A 2 pole separately excited dc motor has the ratings of 220V, 100A, 750 rpm. Resistance
of armature is 0.1 ohms. The motor has two field coils which are normally connected in
parallel. It is used to drive a load whose torque is expressed as TL= 500-0.3N, Nm where
N is the motor speed in rpm. Speed below and above the rated are obtained by armature
voltage control and by connecting two field windings in series respectively.
a. Calculate the motor armature current and speed when the armature voltage is
reduced to 110V.
b. Calculate the motor speed and current when field coils are connected in series.
3) A suburban train consists of motor and trailer coaches in the ratio of 1:1, each motor coach
is driven by 4 dc motors each geared to a driving axle through a reduction gear for which
the gear ratio a=0.4 All the wheels in a motor coach are driving wheels and the trailer coach
has the same number of wheels as motor coach. All wheels have a wheel tread of 0.54 m
in radius and each has a mass of 450kg. The mass of each motor armature is 0.48 tonne
and average diameter of armature core is 0.5 m.The combine weight of one motor and one
trailer coach is 40 tonnes when fully loaded. Determine the coupling torque per motor
required to accelerate the train at 5kmphps. Assume train resistance to be 20 N/tonne of
the train weight.
4) A local train uses motor and trailer coaches in the ratio of 1:2. The weight of a motor coach
is 40 tonnes and that of 35 tonnes. All the wheels in a motor coach are driving wheels. The
train resistance is 30 N/tonne. Effective rotating mass is 10% of the dead weight. If the
coefficient of adhesion is 0.2, calculate
a. The maximum train acceleration on a level track
b. What will be the maximum acceleration if the motor and trailer coaches are used in
the ratio of 1:1.
