This document is a mid-semester test for an Engineering Mechanics course taken during the 2009/2010 academic year at the University of Malaya. The test contains 3 questions about determining the magnitude and direction of a resultant force, calculating the unstretched length of springs supporting a block, and replacing a loading system on a beam with an equivalent single force. Students have 1 hour to complete all questions.

MID-SEMESTER TEST FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING
ACADEMIC SESSION 2009/2010: SEMESTER 1
KMEE 1168: ENGINEERING MECHANICS
September 2009 TIME: 1.00 HOURS
INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:
Answer ALL questions.
Question 1
Determine the magnitude of the resultant
force R and its direction, measured anti- clockwise from the positive x-axis.
Question 2
The 30-kg block is supported by 2 springs
having the stiffness shown. Determine the un-stretched length of each spring after the block is removed. The formula for the tension in the spring is T = k∆x.
Question 3
Replace the loading system acting on the
beam by a single equivalent resultant force. Specify where the force acts, measured from end A.
