Course website: All instructions related to the course, reference material, slides etc will be posted
on the website (http://home.iitk.ac.in/~anandh/MSE694/MSE694.htm)

Course Contents: (depending on the background of students some basic aspects may be covered initially)

(brief version)
Overview of Nanostructures and Nanomaterials: classification. Crystalline nanomaterials and
defects therein. Hybrid nanomaterials. Multiscale hierarchical structures built out of nanosized
building blocks (nano to macro). Nanomaterials in Nature. Nanostructures: Carbon Nanotubes,
Fullerenes, Nanowires, Quantum Dots. Surfaces and interfaces in nanostructures. Thermodynamics
of Nanomaterials. Overview of properties of nanostructures and nanomaterials. How the
performance of nanomaterials come about: size-structure-mechanism-property-performance
pathway. Overview of characterization of nanostructures and nanomaterials. Focus on:
Transmission Electron Microscopic techniques, surface characterization. Deformation behaviour of
nanomaterials. Nanomechanics. Electrical, Magnetic and Optical properties.
Important Points:

 Students should feel free to ask questions at anytime during the lecture.
 Students are encouraged to drop into my office to clarify doubts.
 Attendance: 100% attendance is expected. Students should inform about absence in
advance. Leave on medical grounds should be accompanied with medical certificate for the
same.
 Any use of unfair means (copying in exams, etc.) will lead to 'F' grade. It is your
responsibility to see that other students do not copy from your exam paper. If unfair means
is found then all parties involved will be penalized.
Evaluation*:

Mid-Semester Exam : 30 Marks

End-Semester Exam : 30 Marks
Project work : 30 Marks (details will be discussed in class)
Class interactions and improvement to slides: 10 Marks
Pass Percentage : 40%

* Will be defined/evolved in the class.

The evaluation pattern may further evolve based on the performance of students (& also in discussion with the students).
