ME 601-Stress Analysis

Homework 9

1. Using Airy stress function solve for the stresses for the curved beam problems (a)-(c) with end
loadings.

(a)

(b) (c)

2. Show that the stress function

 0r2
 [sin 2  log r   sin  cos   sin 2  ]

gives the solution to the problem of an elastic half space loaded by a uniformly distributed
shear over the free surface (x <= 0), as shown in the figure. Identify locations where the
stresses are singular.
3. For the problem of a crack at the interface between two dissimilar isotropic materials, stress
function is written as, i  r,   r  1 fi  ,   where subscripts i refers to material 1 and 2.
(a) Write down the boundary conditions at the free edges and at the interfaces.
(b) Find relationship between the constants (Ak, k=1,2,3,4 (refer class note)) from the continuity
at the interface.
5. Show that the Flamant solution can also be used to solve the more general wedge
problem as shown.

6. For the problem of a half space under uniform normal loading as shown in Figure, show
that the maximum shear stress can be expressed by

7. Consider the crack problem shown for the antiplane strain case with, u  v  0 ,
w  w( x, y ) The governing equation for the unknown displacement component with zero
body force is given by Laplace’s equation, which in polar coordinates reads
 2 w w 2w
2 w    0
r 2 rr r 2 2
Use a separation of variables scheme with w  r f ( ) where  is a parameter to be

determined and f ( ) is expected to be an odd function. Show that using this solution form in
the governing equation gives the result w  Ar sin( ) , where A is a constant. Next

determine the polar coordinate stress components, and show that the boundary condition of
zero stress on the crack surfaces gives   n / 2, n  1,3,5... .Finally, using the arguments of
finite displacements but singular stresses at the crack tip, show that 0    1 and thus
conclude that the displacement and stress near r  0 must be of the form,
