Clinical supervision – Prepare and plan
Develop positive and effective relationships with the student, staff, managers, clinical teams and university/
education provider staff
Develop a learning plan with the student that is manageable, realistic and appropriate for my clinical setting
Identify and clearly articulate to the student the boundaries of our respective roles and relationship
Clinical supervision – Facilitating learning
Conduct a variety of education activities (ie. demonstrations, guided practice, tutorials) to achieve the
learning goals for the clinical placement
Utilise learning opportunities effectively to support or extend the student appropriately as their capabilities
develop
Develop a variety of strategies for assisting skill acquisition based on student goals and analysis of their
learning needs
Provide a range of experiences so the student can effectively apply their theoretical knowledge to clinical
practice
Use educational resources (ie. quizzes, handouts, case studies) to facilitate learning effectively for individuals
and groups
Provide consistently clear and constructive feedback including checking the student’s understanding of my
feedback
Adapt my methods for giving feedback to suit different preferences and learning styles
Conclude a feedback session with agreed priorities and a plan of action to improve student performance
Actively encourage the student to engage in critical dialogue about professional practice where they can
question, reflect and discuss issues in a supportive environment
Incorporate activities to help the student identify their learning needs, analyse their progress and guide
ongoing learning
Evaluate the student’s performance using standardised objective criteria or assessment tools
Make recommendations with respect to how the student has met the objectives of the clinical placement
