In the u.s, the public’s political divide is the highest it has been since the civil war.

This
shouldn't surprise many people since every time you turn on the news there is always political
related protests that turn into riots, protesters from both major parties attacking and battling
each other. It completely proves that america has a dissent problem. This is exactly why i
disagree with Daniel J. Boorstin when he states that even if both people (in dissent) may think
they are in the majority, but in fact they seclude themselves and are a minority. I believe that it is
completely possible for dissent to be done by large groups, and happens more often between
large groups than individuals.

Dissent is an extreme form of disagreeing, and when a group is united by common beliefs,
views, and morals then they can completely dissent. This is why most wars start in the first
place. Even tho not every single person will agree with each war, an obvious majority does, and
are willing to join the military to fight for their country (group). Take for example the Korean war(
or the cold war in general), It was a war of beliefs. It was communism vs capitalism, and men
were willing to go die for that believe and the love for their country. Or like stated before, the
same happens with political parties and their followers, republicans and democrats despise
each other because of their opposing views and regularly get into riots that turn into a complete
battle ground. This goes to show that it is very much possible for large quantities of people to
dissent as long as they are united by the same beliefs or the same feelings towards something.

And in a way it might be because of being in large numbers that gives you more courage and
more power to dissent rather than disagree. When you have more people behind you , you feel
more empowered, more confident about your common views, you feel like there's somebody
covering your back. This is why it's so dangerous when large groups with opposing views
collide, each group feels more powerful because of the fact they are in large numbers. Do you
think Martin L. King would have marched all on his own? Probably, but he wouldn't have gone
too far. When you have someone marching right along side you, chanting alongside you, you
feel you are not alone, and you feel like you are capable of doing anything. But he did not march
alone, and because of the massive amounts of people behind him he felt empowered and
capable of achieving his goal.

You might say that everybody in those groups is not exactly the same and don't share every
single of their views . you are right, they aren't. But they dissent with other because of what they
do have in common, the views they do share. They become proud of their beliefs and get
violent. It is what unites them that makes them able to dissent, not what it does not unite them.

In conclusion I believe that dissent not only is it possible for it to happen in groups, but it is most
common, and most most dangerous. If you are in a group in a dissent situation it is better to
organize yourselves and try to use dialogue, to disagree. Disagreeing is just opposing views, a
discussion, and maybe heated argument. But dissent is much more; dissent is a brawl, a riot, a
coup, or even a bloody and long war.
