ToFD is arguably the most versatile and certainly the most extensively ‘proven’ of
all non-intrusive in-spection techniques.

Developed in the early 1970’s in response to the nuclear industry’s need to more
accurately ‘size’ and characterisation integrity affecting flaws in critical plant components
during service. The benefits of the technique have only started to be fully recognised and
accepted by the rest of industry over the last few years. This belated recognition is largely
attributable to the inevitable inertia of established practise and over emphasis on the
unique sizing capabilities inherent with the technique. But the real virtue of ToFD is its
unprecedented ability to efficiently and reliably detect the presence of both fabrication
and service induced defects – particularly those affecting integrity due to their through
wall orientation – whilst simultaneously providing the data necessary for accurate
assessment of their size.
