Peace at Heart

Designed by Jen Tyler

2016
Welcome to my latest, and last pattern for 2016! It has everything in a square that I love! With
the Summer months creeping in I find my mood lifting to match the vibrant sunshiney colours.
Also, I wanted to create a Heart design to reflect the amazing year it’s been for me in Crochet-
land and the lovely response I’ve had to my patterns. Ending with a large cherry on my
(crocheted ) cake when Nadia ( who I’m a huge fan of ) from YARNutopia asked if she could
use one of my patterns in her 365 Granny Squares youtube tutorials! Um, yaaaaaas, and
thank you very much! What an honour and SO EXCITING!!!! My patterns have also appeared
on Knit and Crochet dot com ( YAY! ). It’s a weird feeling, in a good way, to see one’s patterns
on another website!
Although I have spent my entire life so far doing artsy stuff, my crochet work is the creative
outlet that has given me 100% satisfaction. I used to cook for people when I had a Vegan eat-
ery some years back and I thought THAT was my thing. But over time I found it highly unsatis-
fying that the hours put into preparing lovely looking ( and tasting ) food, your “ work” would
disappear into someone’s tummy within minutes! With Crochet, or any creative handwork,
you know it’s going to last more than a few minutes!
So far, hundreds of yarny people have downloaded my patterns ( THANK YOU ) and this means
I better get my bottom into gear and start upping my crochet-pattern-writing-skills! I’ve got
software that draws out crochet charts and it’s my New Years wish to myself that I will finally
buckle down and master this. Argh, it’s so complicated. But I guess everything is until you take
the time to work through it, right?
So, on to this pattern which I am dedicating in thanks to all of you who have taken an interest
in my work. THANK YOU! Here’s wishing you All … the love you deserve, the happiness that is
your right, the health and prosperity you desire and that the crochet fairies always be in your
neck of the woods!

Happy holidays, with lots of contented hooky-time.

Much love, take care and be of good cheer.

USEFUL INFORMATION
YARN: Elle Yarns Family Knit DK
HOOK: 4mm
CROCHET TERMS: US
SIZE: 7” x 7”
SPECIAL STITCHES USED:
Puff (yarn over x 3 )
Front posts
SKILL LEVEL : Beginner to Intermediate

important because the square is a component and not the whole piece.
Colourway suggestions:
Round One
Shell Pink or Aran
1.Start With a Magic Ring. Ch4 = 1tr, 1tr ( = 1 x tr2cluster ), ch2, then 11 tr2cluster , each clus-
ter separated with a ch2. Slip stitch into top of first ch4.
Soft Lime
2. Ch1, then 1sc into 2chsp, 1scfrontpost around top of tr2cluster, 1sc into next
ch2sp,1scfrontpost around top of next tr2cluster, 1sc into next ch2sp. Continue this sequence
until you have gone all the way around and ended with 1sc. Slip stitch into top of scfront post
and then do 1sc into every stitch. =24 stitches.

Round Two
Watermelon or Duck Egg
Creating corners.
Attach new colour into any 1sc space, ch3 (=1dc),
then5dc into that same single crochet. Then, do 1dc in-
to the next 5 stitches, 6dc into the next stitch, 1dc into
the next 5 stitches, 6dc into the next stitch two more
times to create 4 corners and 4 sides. Slst into chains,
fasten off and work in tails
Round Three
Square 1 Square 2
Coral Snowmoon
Coral Rose Aqua
Rose Mistletoe
Teaberry Wintersky

Attach first colour between your 6 corner dc’s ( 3dc’seach side ). Ch3 (=1dc). Then 1dc into
next 11 stitches, 1dc into your next corner space between the 6 dc’s. =13dc’s. With a loop still
on your hook, attach new colour with a slip knot, ch1 and dc into same corner space along
with dc from previous colour, then 1dc into next 11 stitches, one last dc into that corner
space, attach new yarn colour, ch1 and repeat the sequence. Slip stitch into first chains, fas-
ten off and work in your tails.
Round Four
Aran or Crocus
Attach new colour into any dc after your corner ch1. Ch3 (=1dc) then 1dc into next 12 stitches.
Now make a treble front post stitch around two strands ( as shown ) from corner 6dc’s from
your previous Watermelon ( or Duck Egg ) round. Ch4, slip stitch around corner ch space, ch4
and then another trfp into same “strand” space as the previous trfp. Idc into first dc and 1dc
into next 12 dc’s. Repeat the “heart” sequence intil you have 4 heart corners and 4 x 13 dc
sides. Slip stitch into first chains, fasten off and work in tails.
Round Five
Shell Pink or Aran
Now find your ch2 space behind the Hearts. Then, count 5 spaces to the right. What we’re go-
ing to do is divide up the 13dc’s to look like this: 6sc, ch2, skip 2dc’s, 6sc.

Attach new yarn colour into 6th stitch from the Heart on your left. Then 1sc back into next 5
stitches making sure the last stitch falls in the space right before your treble front post. Now,
take a peek at the chain space where you made the slip stitch to form the Heart shape. You
will do 3tr’s around this chain space to the RIGHT of the slip stitch, ch1 and make another 3tr’s
around the chain space to the LEFT of the slip stitch. Then, 1sc into next 6 stitches, ch2, skip 2
dc’s, 1sc into next 6 stitches. Your last sc will fall in that space right before the tr front post. Re-
peat the corner sequence into that 1ch space. Repeat the side sequence .
Round Six
Soft Lime or Sunshine
Start here.
Ch2 (=1hdc), Then 1hdc into next 5 stitches,
ch2, skip over the chspace and continue with
6hdc on the other side. If all goes well your last
hdc should fall in the space right before your
first treble. Now do a hdc frontpost around this
treble, then the next, and the next, ch 1, and do
1 hdc front posts around the next three trebles,
then 1 hdc into very next space and 5 more hdc,
ch2, skip over the chspace, and do 6 more hdc’s
into the next six stitches with the last falling
right before the next treble. Continue with the hdc front post sequence, and then the sc se-
quence until you have completed the round. Slip stitch after your 2ch’s into the first 2ch at the
start of this round. Fasten off.
Round Seven
Shell Pink or Aran
Attach new colour into any 1st ch2 space ( not the second round where a ch2 space was also
made). Ch3 (=1dc) + 1dc = 1x dc2cluster. Ch3, dc2cluster, ch3, dc2cluster, ch3, dc2cluster, then
ch4 and now you’ll attach your chain here with a sc: See image.

If you’re wondering where that is, it’s the

same ch1 space where you squeezed in
those 3 trebles. Then ch2 and squeeze in
a sc on the other side of the second set
of 3tr’s. Then ch4 and dc2cluster back
into that first ch2 space you made in the
row on the Shell Pink round. If you’re
quite a tight crocheter you can add one
more chain to each chain. So 4 ch will be
5ch, 2ch will be 3ch.

Repeat this sequence until you have 4 sets of ch4, ch2, ch4. And 4 sets of dc2cluster, ch3,
dc2cluster, ch3, dc2cluster, ch3, dc2cluster. Slip stitch to close ,around top of first two stitches
( 1 cluster, 4chains ). Fasten off and work in ends.
Round Eight
Watermelon or Duck Egg
Attach your new colour into the first ch4 space right after a cluster set. So, to the LEFT of the
cluster set facing you. Ch2 (=1hdc). Then 4 x hdc’s around same ch space. Your chains will be
at the back. Then 2hdc into the 2 chain space behind the trebles, then 5 x hdc’s around ch4
space, then 1hdc front post around the top of the 1st cluster, then 2hdc’s into the ch3 space,
then 1hdc front post around the 2nd cluster, then 2hdc’s into ch3 space + 2ch +2hdc’s ( mak-
ing a corner here ), then 1hdc front post around the top of 3rd cluster, 2hdc’s into next ch3
space, 1hdc front post around 4th cluster, then 5hdc’s around ch4, then 2hdc’s around ch2,
then 5hdc’s around ch4 and you’ll be back at your cluster corner sequence. If all goes well
you should end up with something like this! Slip stitch closed, fasten off, work in tails.
Round Nine
Now we’re going to use our 4-colours again.
Attach any colour of the four for the square you’ve chosen. Here I’ll start with Coral Rose.
Attach new colour with a ch2 ( = 1hdc) into space right after your hdc front post around 3rd
cluster in the corner. Then you’re going to make another 18 hdc’s into each stitch , 19 hdc’s in
all.

Then make 1 Treble Front Post as shown in the image (attach where shown).
Then ch4 and slip stitch into the ch3 space where you did your corner (2hdc’s ch2, 2hdc),
then ch4 and make a treble front post into that space between the clusters ( as shown ).
Then, in the same way you made your earlier Hearts, slip stitch your new yarn in, and start
this colour with 1 hdc into next 19 stitches.
As shown here, you can see the 4 colour changes and your four different colour Hearts. But
of course, you can choose just one colour to do this round. At this point the square looks a bit
wobbly but sorts itself out beautifully once it’s had a good blocking!
Round Ten
Olive Green or Violet
Last round! Yay!
Start by attaching your new colour into any ch2 space from where you did your hdc corner.

This will now be behind the Heart. Ch3 (=1dc) then 2dc,
ch1 and 3dc all into the ch2 space. Then 1 dc into the
next two dc’s. Then, 1hdc into the next 9 stitches. Now
this:

*This* is the 1ch space you made between the HDC’S. You’re going to ease this to the back of
stitch 10 and do 1 hdc into this small loop. This is what I call an “anchor” stitch. This will keep
these corner bits from curling over and spoiling your square. Then continue to make 9 more
hdc’s into the next 9 stitches, then 1dc into next 2 stitches and 3dc’s, 1ch, 3dc’s into corner ch,
then 1 dc into next two stitches. Continue the sequence. Slip stitch into first chain3, fasten off,
work in tails and give your square a good blocking.

THE END!
