Criterion for Evaluation of Continuous Assessment (CA), End Term Theory Exam
(ETE) & End Term Practical Exam (ETP)

1.0 Category of Courses: From the perspective of examination, all the courses can be
divided in three broad categories:
a. Courses with only theory component
b. Courses with only practical component
c. Courses with both theory and practical component
Scheme of evaluation varies with each category of course. Depending upon the category
of courses, different exam weightages are assigned to all the courses.
Exam Weightage
Category of Course CA* ETE** ETP***
Courses with only theory component 20% 80% NA
Courses with only practical component 20% NA 80%
Courses with both theory and practical component 20% 60% 20%

At the time of evaluation, along with exam weightages, credits assigned to each course
define the scheme of evaluation of continuous assessment.

*CA means Continuous Assessment and is evaluated through assignments.

**ETE means End Term Theory Examination- Pattern for the same is given below.
***ETP means End Term Practical Examination- Pattern for the same is given below.

2.0 Criterion for evaluation of continuous assessment: Through continuous assessment,

students are evaluated throughout the semester/year. To assess the performance of
students continuously, faculty members from university give them home assignments.
Students are evaluated on the basis of their performance in the home assignments.
Scheme of evaluation of home assignments through continuous assessment (CA) is
detailed below:
Credits Number of Maximum Pattern of Assignments Basis of
assigned to a assignments Marks for Evaluation

the basis of assignment

Upto 06 credits 2 20 Total three questions would Student will

3.0 Structure of End Term Theory Exam: Irrespective of category of course (Purely
Theory or Theory + Practical), theory exam would be same for all the courses. Maximum
marks for each theory exam would be 80.

Maximum Marks 80
Duration 3 hours
Coverage of Syllabus Question paper will cover the syllabus uniformly

3.1 Structure of end term theory question paper:

Question Paper will be divided in two parts, viz. Part-A & Part-B
Part A: Short questions (with choice), 10 out of 15 questions:
It will contain short descriptive questions.
Each question will carry 02 marks.
Student is required to attempt any 10 questions out of 15.
Part B: Long questions (with choice), 06 out of 10 questions:
It will contain long descriptive/analytical questions.
Each question will carry 10 marks.
Student is required to attempt any 06 questions out of 10.
10 long questions would be there, one from each unit of the syllabus. Out of total
10 questions, 02 would be analytical and 08 would be descriptive.

4.0 Structure of End Term Practical Exam:

Structure of end term practical exam will remain same irrespective of weightage assigned
to the courses. Students would be required to execute the practical assigned by neutral
examiner. Student would be evaluated on the basis of:
 Execution of practical
 Write up of executed practical
 Oral defense/viva
4.1 Structure of end term practical question paper:
Student would be assigned one practical for execution. Maximum marks for the practical
exam would be 80. Marks would be assigned as per scheme given below:
Maximum Marks 80
Criterion for evaluation
Marks for execution of practical 40
Marks for write up of executed practical 20
Marks for oral defense/Viva 20

5.0 Example for the calculation of marks based on assigned weightages

Consider a course “DCAP101” with following exam weightages:

Type of Course Weightage

CA ETE ETP
Course has both components theory and practical 20% 60% 20%

DCAP101 is a course with 4 credits. Thus, the course will have two assignments and
marks of one best assignment will be considered towards grades and will be calculated as
follows:

Assuming following marks obtained by the student in Continuous Assessment for

this course:
In assignment-I 10 out of 20 marks
In assignment-II 15 out of 20 marks

CA marks considered for student = 15 Marks (Best of the 2 Assignments)

If in ETE- Theory, the student obtains 48 marks out of 80
and In ETP- Practical the student obtains 40 marks out of 80 as per the details below:

Marks for Execution were: 25 out of 40

Marks for Written content were: 05 out of 20
Marks for Viva were: 10 out of 20

In this case, the consolidated evaluation of the students would yield the following score:

Component Actual Actual Marks Weightage in Weighted

Maximum Obtained % Marks
Marks Obtained
CA 20 15 20 15
ETE 80 48 60 (48/80)*60=36
ETP 80 40 20 (40/80)*60=10
100 61
