1.0 INTRODUCTION:-
Feed water system is an important system of combined cycle power
plant. It comprises of two systems i.e. HP Feed water & LP Feed water
System. HP feed water system transfers feed water from deaerator to
HP drum via HP feed regulating station while LP feed water system
transfers feed water from deaerator to LP drum via LP feed regulating
station.
Both HP/LP Feed water systems have three Boiler Feed water pumps
each namely HPBFP & LPBFP. During full load condition, two
HPBFP’s & two LPBFP’s are in service & the third pump is available
as standby. During one GT/HRSG operation i.e. ST Half load
condition, one HPBFP & one LPBFP are in service & the other two
pumps are available as standby.( Refer annexure-1 for schematic view
of Feed water system at NTPC-Dadri). There is a possibility of HP/LP BFP tripping
during changeover. Steam turbine may also tripped during BFP
changeover on BFP tripping. It has long been felt to standardize BFP changeover
procedure, accordingly this LMI has been prepared to facilitate
operation staff in carrying out trouble free changeover of BFP’s from
one combination to another.

3.0 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF OPERATING SYSTEM :

a) HPBFP/LPBFP’s are operated through a GC (functional Group

control) Refer annexure-2 & 3 for functional group screen view.

The HP/LP BFP Group control view can be divided into two parts.

- First part contains operating button for ON/OFF operation of the group.

- The second part shows the Pump selection via SGC (Sub-Group Control) of the
respective pump (SGC1, SGC2, SGC3).
Selection can be A, B or C (or 1,2,3) as following:-
- For one pump operation selection:
SGC1, SGC2, SGC3 represent single pump A, B or C selection.
The pump selection can be made as per requirement.
For two pump operation selection:
SGC1, SGC2, SGC3 selection represent two pumps AB, BC &
CA respectively. The pumps selection can be made as per requirement.

b) Besides group control, individual BFP has automatic start & stop steps via
individual SGC. The sequence when made ON-> OPERATION, follows P/p start
sequence steps, & when made ON ->SHUTDOWN, follows P/p stop sequence
steps.

4.0 HP/LP BFP CHANGEOVER STEPS:-

Changeover steps for BFP have been explained in following modes.

(Ensure that correct BFP group screen i.e. HPBFP or LPBFP is
selected)

4.1 BFP two p/p operation to one p/p changeover operation:

1.) Suppose p/p A and p/p B are running in two p/p operation mode and it is
planned that only p/p # B is to be run in one p/p operation mode. (Note: Ensure
only one WHRB is in service for one BFP operation, else with two WHRBs is in
service, one BFP operation will lead to closing of both Div. Damper to 50% over
system protection)
2.) Made GC of BFP Group OFF.
3.) (Deleted)
4.) Open the recirculation v/v of the pumps, which is to be taken under shutdown
(P/P-A in this case). Ensure Recirculation V/v of other running BFP in AUTO.

5.) Shutdown the SGC of P/p# A.(Operation selected->Shutdown Execute).

Check all the shutdown steps are completed.
6.) Under GC of BFP, change the selection of p/p to # B. (SGC2 Execute)
7.)Made GC of BFP ON. (ON Execute).
8.) If any stand-by pump takes start within 30 seconds. It indicates either the
running BFP has incur a problem or GC is not functioning properly or p/p selection
is wrong. Inform C&I.

4.2 BFP one p/p operation to two p/p operation:

Suppose p/p # A is running in single p/p operation and it is planned

that p/p#A and p/p#C to be run in two-pump operation. i.e. P/p#C to be taken in
service along with existing P/p #A.
1.) Made GC of BFP OFF.
2.) Check all start permissives are available for the p/p to be taken in service
(p/p-C in this case). Ensure its recirculation V/v is also open.
3.) Start the p/p#C through SGC BFP#C sequence. Check that BFP# C sequence
completed all the starting steps.
4.)Under GC of BFP, Change selection of pumps to SGC3. (for C-A BFP pump
running logic.)
5.) Made the GC of BFP ON. (ON Execute)
(Note: Before making GC ON with two BFPs in service, Ensure both WHRBs is in
service for two BFP operation (i.e. both Div. Damper position ‘not close’), else
with one WHRB is in service, one BFP will take Auto Shut down after 10 min.
monitoring time. No such constraint while taking two BFPs in service with GC
OFF. )

# If any stand-by pump takes start within 30 seconds. It indicates either the running
BFPs has incur a problem or GC is not functioning properly or p/p selection is
wrong. Inform C&I.

4.3 BFP changeover during one p/p operation:

1.) Suppose p/p #A is running and it is planned that p/p#C is to be started

and p/p A is to be made off.
2.) Made GC of BFP OFF. (OFF Execute)
3.) Check all start permissives are available for the p/p to be taken in service
(p/p-C in this case). Ensure its recirculation V/v is also open.
4.) Start the p/p#C through SGC BFP#C sequence. (On Execute ->operation
Execute) Check that BFP# C sequence completes all the starting steps.
5.) Ensure P/p#A recirculation V/v is open. Recirculation V/v of other running P/p
in Auto.
6.) Initiate shutdown of P/P#A through SGC of p/p# A (On execute -> Shutdown
Execute). Check all the shutdown steps are completed.
7.) Under GC control, change the p/p selection from p/p#A to p/p#C (SGC1 to
SGC3). (SGC3 Execute).
8.) BFP GC is to be made ON.

# If any stand-by pump takes start within 30 seconds. It indicates either the running
BFPs has incur a problem or GC is not functioning properly or p/p selection is
wrong. Inform C&I.

4.4 BFP CHANGEOVER DURING 2 P/P OPERATION

1.) Suppose p/p#A and p/p#B are running and it is planned that p/p#A
and p/p#C to be started.
2.) Made GC of BFP OFF. (OFF Execute)
3.) Check all start permissives are available for the p/p to be taken in
service (p/p-C in this case). Ensure P/p#C recirculation V/v is open. Recirculation
V/v of other running P/p in Auto.
4.) Start the p/p#C through SGC BFP#C sequence. (On Execute ->operation
Execute)
Check that BFP# C sequence completes all the starting steps.

5.) Ensure P/p#B recirculation V/v is open. Recirculation V/v of other running P/p
in Auto.
6.) Initiate shutdown of P/P#B through SGC of p/p# B (On execute -> Shutdown
Execute). Check all the shutdown steps are completed.
7.) Under GC control, change the p/p selection to p/p#C (SGC3 Execute).
8.) BFP GC is to be made ON.

# If any stand-by pump takes start within 30 seconds. It indicates either the running
BFPs has incur a problem or GC is not functioning properly or p/p selection is
wrong. Inform C&I.
