LIGHTER MATERIALS IN THE Jonathan Taday

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
INTRODUCTION

Cars are tools used daily to facilitate human activities, such

as mobilizing, transporting food, displacing cargo in
general; so that the cars can perform each of these
activities their manufacture must meet standardized
characteristics in international standards at the time of
manufacture, and thus can perform optimally at the time of
use.
In the present work we will analyze the characteristics of
the materials currently used in the automotive industry with
which the vehicles are built, which improve their
performance and efficiency at the time of their
performance.

CHARACTERISTICS OF
MATERIALS
Among the advantages
offered by lighter SECURITY

materials can be found: MAXIMUM RIGIDITY

economy, fuel
consumption, care of VEHICLE WEIGHT
the environment, PERFORMANCE
weight, among others.
Economy, fuel
consumption and
environmental care  Some mechanical parts of vehicles are made of
alternative materials that are affordable such as: brass
used to make radiators, copper made from bushings,
aluminum with which a number of Auto, the plastic with
which the structure of the car is manufactured so that in
this way it helps reduce the cost of a vehicle.
 Stanley calculated that if you remove 50 kg of weight to
each car that exists in the planet would save $ 40.000
million in fuel every year. In this way it would help to take
care of the planet, it would improve the performance of
the fuel and therefore of the car, besides the cost of
maintenance of the car would diminish.
Characteristics of
materials  Aluminum has resistance to corrosion and
traction, is a good conductor of electricity
CHARACTERISTIC PLASTIC METAL
and heat, is not magnetic or toxic, good light
DENSITY LOW HIGH
reflector, waterproof and odorless, and very
PRICE LOW HIGH
ductile, it is recyclable.
PROSECUTION EASY DIFFICULT  The tin presents characteristics such as:
CORROSION ---- HIGH ductility, resistance to corrosion and surface
ENERGY LOW HIGH smoothness.
CONSUMPTION
 The plastic presents an easy molding, very
FLEXIBILITY HIGH AND LOW RIGID minimum weight, flexibility, resistance; It is
TRANSPARENCY HIGH AND LOW OPAQUE recyclable, it is not corrosive. Magnesium is a
ELECTRICITY INSULATING HIGH material that has lightness, rigidity.
CONDUCTION
Maximum rigidity

 The aluminum is soft and light so the body of

most cars is composed of it, which provides
high strength in its structure. It works with
computer systems that provide high
technology for the design and construction of
the structure of the vehicles with a stiffness
torsion in 40% more effective and 60%
lighter.
Performance and efficiency
 The new materials with which a car is made
provide greater strength and energy
absorption capacity, have excellent
stability and little thermal expansion, also
support greater static and dynamic loads.
 Zinc batteries provide greater efficiency so
they would be implemented in cars in
greater quantity. Materials that possess
plastic like polymers have high energy
efficiency.
Security and vehicle weight
 Several investigations have been carried out to
considerably increase safety in the cars, obtaining an iron
alloy that is composed of: manganese, silicon, aluminum
and iron, which has characteristics of rigidity and
flexibility, which is applied for the construction of the
body.
 Among the materials that help to reduce the weight of the
vehicle are: aluminum, advanced high strength steel,
polypropylene, polyamide and polyurethane.
 The polypropylene has low density and is processed
quickly, also has impact strength and rigidity so it allows
to manufacture pieces with a minimum weight.
CONCLUSIONS
 The companies dedicated to the manufacture of
vehicles have selected the materials that provide the
best properties and characteristics, trying to generate
the least environmental impact.
 People will be able to purchase a modern vehicle
with avant-garde design, aerodynamics, low fuel
consumption, high technology, safety and comfort.
 The use of modern materials in the safety of a
vehicle helps to protect the occupant of the vehicle in
the event of an impact and the use of more resistant
materials with better features can reduce the
likelihood of an accident.
