Chakra Points - The Basics

The term chakra means wheel, or disk. Also some translations expand this to
wheel of light.

In simplest terms a chakra is a point within the body's energy system. Another
way to define chakras is to call them points in space and time where our physical
bodies meet with metaphysical energies.

When the chakras are open, aligned, and balanced we are at our
absolute optimal levels of health. But when one or more of our
chakras become closed, unbalanced, or out of alignment we
can suffer from great discomfort and even a wide variety of
health problems.

Acupuncture, Yoga, Modern Medicine, and Quantum Physics all validate the
importance of the chakra system. Basic knowledge about the primary chakras
can greatly enhance your life and allow you to become a more effective person.

Chakra treatments have also been known to heal or relieve serious issues even
when traditional medicine has failed to do so.

To be honest, it's difficult to reference the chakras objectively with written or

spoken words. In doing so, we must accept that some knowledge will be lost.

The purest way to understand the chakra system is to experience it for yourself.

Having said this, obviously written and spoken guides are necessary for getting
started. This report exists to educate people on the basics of the chakra system
without confusing them in the process, and without involving any requirements
for specific religious beliefs.

The table below provides and extremely simplified introduction to the primary
chakras. To learn more about individual chakra points continue reading.

about two inches below your belly
button, and relates to creativity, joy,
and enthusiasm.
Solar Plexus Chakra This point is in
the center of your diaphragm, and it
relates to personal power,
expansiveness, and inner growth.
Heart Chakra This point is found
directly in the center of your chest,
and relates to love, devotion, and
higher emotional being.
Throat Chakra This point is at the
bottom of your throat, above the collar
bone, and relates to higher thinking
and communication.

Your Base Chakra
The base chakra, or first chakra, is also called Muladhara or
padma. This point is found at the very base of your spine,
between the anus and sexual organs.

The traditional Vedic symbol for Muladhara can be seen to the

right.

Associated Color: Deep red

Associated Element: Earth

Associated Spinal Region: 4th sacral vertebra

The base chakra is literally the root of your subtle energy system. The Vedics
believe energy flows into your body from the earth through this point, thus your
base is the center for true groundedness.

This important energy center regulates our overall physical harmony, or health,
and relates to the mental and emotional energies of stability, security, and
sensuality. An imbalance of your base chakra can result in lack of focus, light-
headedness, insecurity, unstable thoughts and emotions, and numerous physical
dis-eases.

A very simple way to balance and even heal your base chakra is to pay attention
to your body and practice healthy movements. Here are two easy steps toward a
vibrant, balanced base chakra.

Good Posture - Keep strong posture by holding your back straight and
imagining a steel pole running from the base of your spine to the top-center of
your skull. This will allow energy to flow freely into your root chakra and outward
along your spine.

Good posture takes work at first, but once the habit is formed you'll have more
energy and focus, and you'll be able to avoid a plethora of health issues.

Proper Breathing - Be mindful of your breathing and strive to pull the breath in
from the bottom of your lungs. Visualize your abdomenal muscles drawing the air
in deep below your belly button, holding it in a relaxed manner, and then pushing
it out from bottom to top.

With a little practice you can learn to breathe like this nearly all the time. Many
doctors call this "belly breathing", and it has been proven to be a crucial factor in
the reduction of stress and the improvement of heart health.

Physical Bliss You can also balance your root chakra by appreciating physical
bliss. Be particularly aware of the pleasant sensations of walking barefoot,
stroking the soft fur of a beloved pet, and hugging a dear friend.

Certainly taking this to the next level by indulging in a massage or treated bath
can also be helpful. Even something as simple as a scented candle can clear
minor blockages in and around your base chakra.

Color Breathing Exercise For This Chakra

One of the most basic - yet powerful - techniques for opening, balancing, healing,
or empowering a chakra is the practice of color breathing. Each chakra relates to
its own specific color, making it very easy to apply this breath/visualization
exercise in an effective manner.

Before beginning, it is recommended that you use basic meditation to relax your
body and focus your mind. Once you have achieved a state of calm, centered
being, proceed with the exercise below:

Remember to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.

1. Center your awareness on the base chakra, at the very bottom of your
spine.
2. Imagine this point as a deep red point of warm, glowing light.
3. Inhale deeply, and visualize the air as a thick, red cloud being pulled into
your body from your base chakra. Allow the breath to completely fill your
lungs.
4. As your lungs fill, relax and allow the breath to begin rolling evenly
outward. Continue to visualize the air as thick, red, and full of warm
energy.
5. Continue to breathe, allowing the air to fill your lungs and then roll slowly
outward.
6. Remain mindful of your base chakra as a glowing point of red energy.
7. Also be aware of your weight sinking beneath you with each passing
breath, and imagine yourself becoming physically anchored to the ground
underneath you.

Practice this color breathing for ten to twenty minutes on a regular basis and
expect your base chakra to become balanced and strong. Energy should then
flow freely up your spine into the next chakra.

Your Sacral Chakra
The sacral chakra, or second chakra, is also called Svadisthana,
bhima, or the spleen and naval center. This point is found just
below your belly button, normally about 1.5 inches.

The traditional Vedic symbol for Svadisthana can be seen to the

right.

Associated Color: Orange

Associated Element: Water

Associated Spinal Region: 1st lumbar vertebra

The sacral chakra relates to your emotional states and functions, as well as your
creativity and sensitivity. This center is also traditionally associated with sexual
desire and energy.

When this chakra is out of balance the results could be emotional turmoil, sexual
dysfunction, or extreme lack of motivation.

The most practical way to balance and nourish this chakra is to seek a balanced,
healthy emotional state. This might sound like a lot of work for people who are
struggling with depression and other issues, but the truth is it all begins with
loving yourself.

Positive Self-Esteem - Building a positive self-image will go a long way toward

balancing this chakra. And there are numerous affirmations and programs that
can teach you how to go about this.

Becoming Aware Of Your Emotions - Additionally, practicing emotional

observation, or the act of paying close attention to your emotional states and
recognizing any patterns you find, is an important initial step. Most people are
willing to allow their emotions to control them, when in fact we all have the power
to observe and direct our emotional energies in a productive manner.

Your Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus charka, or third chakra, is also called Manipura,
or dashapatra. This point can be found beneath the sternum at
the center of the torso.

The traditional Vedic symbol for Manipura can be seen to the

right.

Associated Color: Yellow

Associated Element: Fire

The solar plexus chakra is believed by modern students to be a center of great

potential power. It relates to digestion, personal power, and growth or expansion
in the emotional and spiritual realms.

NewParadigmEbooks.com 6
An imbalance in this chakra can manifest as a "stressed out" feeling, fatigue, or
even anger.

A great way to bring this chakra into balance is with physical activity such as Tai
Chi or Yoga. Clearly these two methods are great for your entire subtle energy
system but any form of good exercise can go a long way toward stimulating the
solar plexus chakra.

Linear Movements - Traditional calisthenics and roadwork such as walking or

jogging can be effective for stimulating this chakra. Assertive, linear (straight line)
motion seems to have a focusing effect on the energies channeled through this
point.

Visualization Any time you are feeling over-stressed or controlled by others, you
can take a couple of minutes to visualize this chakra as a glowing sun in the
center of your body. Take short, crisp breaths and allow your focus to rest at this
chakra whil visualizing yourself "breaking through" whatever barriers are
currently working against you.

2. Imagine this point as a bright yellow point of warm, glowing light.
3. Pulling and pushing air directly from this center, inhale four times - sharp
and fast - then exhale four times - again sharp and fast.
4. These are rapid, short breaths. Four inhalations followed immediately by
four exhalations make one repetition, and there is no space between
repetitions.
5. Do between 3 and 10 repetitions, being careful not to get dizzy or light-
headed.
6. As you breathe, imagine your solar plexus glowing more and more
vibrantly and pulsing yellow energy through your entire body.
7. Stretch your spine and keep your weight centered.

Your Heart Chakra

The heart chakra, or fourth chakra, is also called Anahata or
padma-sundara. This point is located in the center of your chest,
over the sternum.

The traditional Vedic symbol for Anahata can be seen to the

right.

Associated Color: Green

Associated Element: Air

Associated Spinal Region: 4th thoracic vertebra

The heart chakra relates to circulation, love, passion, and devotion. This center is
said to be the gateway to higher thinking and being because it connects the
lower chakras to the higher chakras.

An imbalance here can manifest as a physical heart or circulation issue, or as

loathing and extreme judgmental behavior.

Here are two easy ways to enhance and balance the heart chakra:

Explore Your Sense Of Touch - Begin to appreciate your tactile awareness in a

new way. This can mean being extra mindful when stroking your pet or holding
your mate, or it can involve active experimentation throughout the day as you
become more aware of your sense of touch.

Notice especially how you are able to actually "feel" things before you come into
physical contact with them. Forming this sort of initial awareness will prepare you
for in-depth study of new chakra treatments.

Experiencing Beauty More Fully - You might be amazed by the raw healing
power that can be found in the observation of true beauty. The best example of
this can be found through appreciating nature.

Find the time to sit outdoors, under a tree or in a garden, and meditate on the
natural sights and sounds. Channel any physical bliss this creates into the center
of your chest and visualize your heart chakra growing warm and bright.

NewParadigmEbooks.com 9
An imbalance in the throat chakra can result in ear, nose, or throat problems, and
can manifest as destructive and hateful speech.

The path to a balanced throat chakra begins with the observation of

communication and sound.

Clear Communication Practices - Pay special attention to the way you

communicate with those around you and work to resolve any blockages or issues
that prevent the free flow of thought and ideas from one party to another.
Allowing communication to occur in its most free form is a great way to channel
subtle energy into and through the throat chakra.

It is also important for you to be able to speak your personal truth, whatever that
might be. Many times problems - even physical health issues - can arise when a
person feels stifled or is expending energy to hold their message within.

Exercise Your Vocal Cords - The act of singing, or even humming, can
strengthen your communication skills and clear/balance the throat chakra. You
might also take the time to study the Mantra system to learn about sacred
syllables.

forward. This helps some people maintain their focus on the chakra point.
3. Breath in deeply, visualizing bright blue energy flowing outward from your
throat.
4. You may hold the breath, or breathe out right away, whichever you prefer.
5. As you exhale, allow a low-pitched, natural hum to rise from the base of
your throat. This sound need not be especially musical, but should be
steady.
6. Imagine the vibrations from the humming increases the glow of your throat
chakra and causes the blue energy flowing through your body to pulsate.

This point is found above and bewteen the eyes in the center of
your brow.

The traditional Vedic symbol for Ajna can be seen to the right.

Associated Color: Indigo

Associated Element: Mind

intuition, and clarity. This center is the key to greater wisdom and true
enlightenment, and is believe by many to be the center of psychic power and
awareness.

Blockages or imbalances within this chakra will result in sleep disorders,

confusion, arrogance, and delusions.

The key to balancing the third eye is meditative and balanced living.

Maintain A Balanced Sleep Cycle - Be sure to get regular intervals of sleep

within each 24-hour period. It's not as important when your sleep occurs, as it is
to be sure you avoid too much or too little and find the harmonic balance of sleep
time that is right for you.

Regular Meditation - Adopt a routine of daily meditation. Ideally you should

have one session after waking and another before returning to sleep.
