In these module you will learn the classification of volcanoes.

Activity 1

1. Make 2 mounds with a hole at the middle to simulate volcanoes.

2. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a teaspoon of orange food color for
each “volcano”
3. Pour mixture into the hole of each volcano. Label A and the other B.
4. Pair ½ cup vinegar in A and ½ cup water in B.
5. Observe what happens.

1
Answer these:

1. What happened in Volcano A? Volcano B?

2. Which volcano is showing greater activity? Let us call this active volcano.
3. Which volcano is not showing any activity? Let us call this inactive volcano.

Remember:
There are two types of volcano namely active
volcano and inactive volcano.

Activity 2

Active and Inactive Volcanoes

A popular way of classifying volcanoes is by their

frequency of eruption. Most scientist consider a volcano active if it
has erupted in the last 10,000 years. There are about 1500 active
volcanoes in the world – majority along the Pacific Ring of Fire
and around 50 of these erupts each year.

Some volcanoes may remain dormant for a long period of

time, but suddenly show signs of activity. These types of
volcanoes are classified as inactive volcanoes.

Answer:

1. What is an active volcano?

2. What is an inactive volcano?

2
Read and Learn More.

Aside from the active and inactive volcanoes, some

scientists added a third classification of volcano, the extinct
volcano. Extinct volcanoes are those scientists consider unlikely to
erupt again, because the volcanoes no longer have magma supply

I Learned That:

 Volcanoes can be classified as active and inactive

 Most scientists consider a volcano active if it has erupted in the last 10,000 years.
 A volcano is considered inactive if it has not erupted within historic times.
 Some scientist added a third classification extinct for volcanoes that have not
erupted in historic times.
